Somebody left a Cash Withdrawal receipt sticking out of the ATM in the local Morrisons. £86,398 in their account...

I'm a few miles from Glasgow. Nobody can tell me that wasn't done deliberately to elicit envy.... Well, it worked. I could really do with just the £398 right now, nevermind the £80 Grand.....😆

I often walk away from the atm without taking my receipt. It’s usually when I’m in a hurry and is nothing to do with trying to make people jealous.

What a strange thing for you to say.

Then you should press the No receipt button or show balance on screen. What a strange thing for you to do.

Well said, It wasn't as smart an answer as she thought it was, was it?

we had £250,000 in our account for a few days, prior to a house purchase. It may have been something like that.

Drew79 · 16/05/2026 18:08

Spare change that. I keep £300k in my current account and £150k under my mattress

Anonemousse · 16/05/2026 18:22

Because of some mortgage moving new bank account jiggery pokery, I once had almost £130,000 in my current account. I would open my banking app and sigh foundly at it. I also refused to take my bank card out with me because you can guarantee that it would be the one time it got stolen or lost!
I was sad when it moved on and my bank account was back to £87.43.

Must be the Giffnock Morrisons 😄

babyproblems · 16/05/2026 18:32

Maybe it’s someone going through probate or similar. You don’t know it was their current account. That was my first thought!

Animatic · 16/05/2026 18:38

Could be smth innocent lile house deposit moved to this account before paying

Catok178 · 16/05/2026 18:52

This happened to me when we were exchanging houses: an amazing bank balance for one day. I definitely took the slip for posterity!
Maybe this was someone checking that a huge-for-them transaction had taken place?

My husband thinks it's fun to see how much someone else has, like it's a competition. 🫣
I think it's dangerous. If people see you leave the receipt they now know you have more than 85K in the bank.
Fussing at my dh won't stop his little game, but I should add that if he sees a receipt that shows the previous person is really skint, he sometimes stops them to give them "the twenty they left in the machine." He does it off-handedly and no one ever seems to be offended.
I think it keeps him humble. 😉

Shinyhappyapple · 16/05/2026 19:04

I can’t imagine for one minute anyone would want another person to know that they had this much money in their account . I imagine they feel total paranoia each time they get their bank card out.

I had that for a couple of hours after a house sale. Ahh that was nice. Now
its overdrawn.

Yup me too! 😂

Busbygirl · 16/05/2026 19:13

I had a hell if a lot more than that in my current account the day before I completed on my new house purchase!

Here's some perspective; 3 years ago I had almost this exact amount in my account. It was half the proceeds from the sale of what should have been my forever house, plus a few grand my best friend loaned me, when I'd finally got free of my disabled son's abusive father. We were homeless for 4 months, while I scoured the market for something I could buy cash because I couldn't get a mortgage either. We lived out of a 10 year old's bedroom those 4 months because I couldn't even get a rental and then moved into a barely habitable, damp, nasty terrace that's only just getting finished and now I have to move again, if I can find a school that can meet my son's needs. Hardly enviable. But, at least we don't live with that arsehole anymore, my son is going from strength to strength I own our home outright and I'll probably make £30k profit on it.
The secret to a happy life is to recognise what you're thankful for, figure out how to change what you're unhappy with and not fall into the trap of "grass is greener". It's not.

Cakeandcardio · 16/05/2026 19:16

It happened to us once too. I think there was about £15k in the account. At the time we were so skint that we could barely afford our bills. I can remember that feeling if being so jealous as we were scrimping to get by. I am also in Scotland - just outside of Glasgow 👋🏻

Ffs, and what anyone has in their bank account is any of your business how exactly? You didn't have to read it you nosy cu*t. And I seriously doubt anyone with that much in a bank account is remotely bothered with trying to make you jealous. Get over yourself.

Oh, we'll be there or thereabouts in a week or two as well. I wince at the dreaded text from the Bank saying 'Your latest transaction has taken you into your agreed overdraft...'

It’s the unagreed overdraft texts you have to really worry about 😳

My bank, Nationwide, at the inside machine, asks if you want a receipt. I always say no but the machine gives you one anyway! I always rip it up and throw it in the bin. And I have never in my entire life had that much money in an account!

It could be money for a house deposit. I had £250,000 in my current account on Thursday to transfer it to the solicitors on Friday for our house we are buying.

Topseyt123 · 16/05/2026 19:48

There can be many reasons why this might happen. Not all are ones to be jealous of and it doesn't necessarily mean that the person is wealthy.

I will have a similar amount come into my current account in about a week. It is because my DH died suddenly in March and his life insurance have agreed to pay out the claim so that I can clear a mortgage. If they didn't I'd be stuffed, as well as widowed.

I can assure you that it is nothing to be jealous of. I'd far rather have my lovely DH still around and not need that money.
