Could we do what Poland has done? Would you be in favour?

Is this a vox pop? What do you think of it OP?

Hotchocolateandsnow · 19/10/2025 20:31

This would be epic for people with 2 or more kids. However I can see if you couldn’t have any more kids / mentally couldn’t handle more than 1 it’s another kick in the teeth for anyone struggling

WonderfulSmith · 19/10/2025 20:31

So the people who can’t have children have to fund schools for people who do? Nice.

SummerEve · 19/10/2025 20:33

And what about people who don't have 2 children? I would not be happy about this at all.

We all benefit from good education.

JurassicPark4Eva · 19/10/2025 20:34

Bloody stupid.

Those who will benefit most from a tax and government system are not going to pay into it?

Would love to see how those projections look vs the reality.

TidyDancer · 19/10/2025 20:34

What a ridiculous idea.

WonderfulSmith · 19/10/2025 20:34

Garamousalata · 19/10/2025 20:33

We all benefit from good education.

While I agree, it would be very hard to see it that way.

And where is all the money going to come from to fund this drop in tax?

Arlanymor · 19/10/2025 20:35

Old news from August - there is a threshold - people should google for the full story.

ThrowAwayHooray · 19/10/2025 20:37

As usual the devil’s in the detail, families are only exempt if they earn UNDER €32,973 which is about £28,643

DustyMaiden · 19/10/2025 20:37

surely that’s not real

Who do you think paid for your schooling?

As someone who can’t have children I am also grateful for everyone having the children who will be paying my pension and wiping my bum when I’m old.

NuffSaidSam · 19/10/2025 20:39

I think it could work with a threshold in place. It could essentially replace the benefits that these families get so it rewards people who work rather than people who don't. I think it's a good idea.

slightlyunimpressed · 19/10/2025 20:39

It basically increases the tax free threshold
to £30k for families with two or more children. It wouldn’t work here, as households aren’t taxed as a unit so it would be incredibly difficult to work out (and the amount saved in tax is pretty much equivalent as the amount received here in child benefit).

I also wouldn’t really fancy explaining to my sister who was desperate for a second child but has had to be put into menopause as part of her breast cancer treatment, that I don’t have to pay tax but she does.

So only low earning families that wouldn't pay much anyway, I suppose it's not much different to paying tax then getting benefits back.

WonderfulSmith · 19/10/2025 20:31

Don’t be silly. Schools are funded for children - people without children will have paid taxes to pay for you to go.

This headline is a bit misleading. It’s a tax free threshold of about £28k if converted to £. So it’s not no income tax at all. And I’ve no idea whether Poland has any kind of child benefit equivalent, but if they don’t, then this is just a more generous version of that, delivered in a different way. If looked at that way it’s not really groundbreaking.

labamba18 · 19/10/2025 20:45

I do think that governments will start to have to get creative if they want to make sure there’s enough people to support the retired and elderly. After decades of ‘well you shouldn’t have kids if you can’t afford them’ politicians seem shocked that many couples have said ‘okay then’. I don’t know what the answer is, and hopefully by the time I’m old we’ll have an army of very caring robots!

Those educated children will fund the retirement of older generations and potentially their health and social care bills too.

So it's not far off our personal tax allowance of about £12500 tax free. 25k combined if both parents working. Except ours is for everyone, with children or not.

So nothing like the headline suggests!

Bigneonsign · 19/10/2025 20:49

Abortion is pretty much illegal in Poland. This is the least they can do, arseholes.

But that’s not how it would feel to people. It would feel unfair and unjust.

Hi,
I think it could be brilliant. Could help the COL crisis and help put a lot more money back into the economy.

Thats kind of how the NHS works; people who are working help pay for people who are in hospital and need treatment so I would say... 'yes'

A tax break for parents would put money back into the economy.

What would you suggest as an alternative?
