Could we do what Poland has done? Would you be in favour?

I'm in Belgium and there is a tax break for children and childcare for under 12 is tax deductible. And so are cleaners. And family allowance goes up the more kids you have. Plus school is free from 2.5 yo. So despite having quite high tax rates - 40% rate starts very low, it is a good tax regime for families.

Worldwide, we don’t. Immigration is your friend.

Yes, that way you can rob all the expertise out of poor countries, leaving them even less well resourced to look after their own population.

People shouldn’t have a choice?

You already have it with large tax free baseof 12.5k...

Hi,
I think it could be brilliant. Could help the COL crisis and help put a lot more money back into the economy.

lol at money into the economy. The UK currently doesn’t generate enough income through taxes to cover expenses so they have to borrow more and more money to cover the difference called the budget deficit which continues to increase each year whilst the cost of borrowing also increases meaning the UK government has to pay more just to service the interest payment on the debt.

I guarantee you that the UK economy will crash if they decide everyone who has 2 children should stop paying taxes 😂. Maybe if it’s based on a low income threshold but what you trying to portray is anyone who has 2 kids will be exempt from taxes.

The UK literally has to find ways to increase tax income in the upcoming budget but you think a policy to reduce the tax income by exempting everyone who has 2 or more kids from taxes will work 😂

What happens if we end up with more and more people deciding to have 2 kids to be exempt and we end up with more people being exempt that actually paying?

And not only will the government lose the tax income from those parents but will also have to fund school places for those kids, NHS costs for the family of 4 etc from an already insufficient tax income whilst the parents with 2 kids contribute zero. Yeah that will work 😂

People do have a choice. Individuals have a choice. And no doubt we'll utilise that choice to plunder the educated and skilled to keep our own lights on while congratulating ourselves about being so ethically responsible.

seaelephant · 19/10/2025 22:12

Given that it's a country that forces women to give birth, I think it's probably fair

Allowing people to better their lives by moving to the country of their choice is “plundering” nothing.

Okay, well the populations who trained up doctors and engineers who then left might feel differently.

Curiousendeavours · 19/10/2025 22:27

It’s currently at proposal stage, not a law (yet?).The threshold is to be roughly £28.5k per person, NOT household.

Poland also has a scheme equivalent to the UK child benefit, where parents receive circa £165/month per child.

They may well but I’m fully in favour of freedom of movement. If the governments of whatever countries those doctors and engineers rewarded their skills appropriately, perhaps they wouldn’t feel the need to leave. Such as the UK, where countless doctors are leaving for Australia and New Zealand because terms and conditions in the UK are poor in comparison.

So, we actively recruit doctors from Nigeria, because we haven't trained up enough of our own. They plug a gap.

But these doctors are coming from a country which has 0.4 physicians per 1000 people.

And we are paying them to move to a country which has 2.8 physicians per 1000 people.

Great for the individual. Terrible for the source country.

Having four DC I think this is very welcome news...hopefully Scotland catches on!

Tiredofwhataboutery · 19/10/2025 22:41

Lots if countries do offer tax breaks for parents ( not zero tax) for example in France you get an extra 50% tax allowance per child and they tax as a family unit so if you had a Sahp, two kids the working parent could get three lots of tax allowance.

I do think rather than the whole UC system of top ups an extra tax allowance might be more sensible. I get UC as a single parent but I pay more tax than I get. Much simpler to just adjust a tax code surely? Possibly it’d encourage people to work more if they’d be better off.

Perhaps if the Nigerian Government funded its public health service better, which it’s perfectly well able to do, the doctors would be happy to remain.
Nigeria is a notoriously corrupt country. I don’t blame doctors for wanting to leave one bit.

Right. But you don't see how we are plundering skills and resources from another country who needs it more? You are so determined to cling to your point of view that you cannot concede that relying on immigration harms people, or you don't care.

And, as an aside, you'd struggle to find a country that doesn't have a falling birth rate that has a reputable government.

Many European and Scandinavian nations have falling birth rates and reputable Governments.
I’m “clinging” to my point because it is a valid one. I’m an advocate for freedom of movement. I consequently believe that your premise is incorrect, which is my prerogative. That’s how discussion forums work.
If Nigerian doctors are sick of the corrupt system in their home country, why the hell shouldn’t they improve their family’s lives by emigrating.

Pistachiocake · 19/10/2025 23:04

Many people who have one child with additional needs choose not to have another, but actually have things far harder, for example, they can't take on the jobs/promotions etc they want. My friend was crying because her 8 year old is still in nappies due to his condition, and all her friends are now able to relax more on holidays, do their own thing, and her life is very difficult, much as she adores him, but it's not all at true to say having 2 children is necessarily hard work. Obviously it depends on the individuals concerned.
This seems wrong and a kick in the teeth for some people.

Upstartled · 19/10/2025 23:05

No, you've misread what I said. There are very few places that don't have a declining birth rate, but those who are defying that trend, don't have the best governments.

Upstartled · 19/10/2025 23:09

So, you don't see a problem with stripping a country of its doctors, leaving the native population increasingly vulnerable?

And you have no shame in claiming this to be the ethical solution to our own inverted population pyramid?

It's clear what you are saying, I'm just amazed you feel like you have a moral upper hand here.

No one is stripping anywhere. These are human beings with free will. If their home countries weren’t so fucking awful, they’d choose to stay.

Ah well, I suppose the quicker the population of Nigeria is completely denuded of all their healthcare professionals to serve our own population, the quicker they can decrease the surplus population.

Nigerian doctors have free will. That is the point. No-one is forcing them to leave (except perhaps the corrupt government).

Fucking hell, what's wrong with you? "Oh dear"? So sad, too bad, now we have the doctors you educated, please die quietly?
