Could we do what Poland has done? Would you be in favour?

We do need more kids. The falling birthrate means there won't be enough workers to pay the pensions in a few years.

No, we need more positive contributors to the tax system. That can come from immigration.

xogossipgirlxo · 19/10/2025 23:56

It’s not true, no such law in Poland.

BreakingBroken · 20/10/2025 00:14

if any country does this it's because it is fiscally sound. no one is going to propose concepts that are at a full financial loss, no country can run like that.
what is the root cause they are trying to achieve? are they wanting to increase the polish population as to not require immigrants to help prop up the aging population (most who have one child will want to have two).

UnicornLand1 · 20/10/2025 10:16

Poland has a very, very low birth rate, like the lowest in Europe (hardly 1 child per woman), so I guess they're desperate for radical solutions. But it's just a draft of a law that he has sent to a Parliament and I don't think this will get through, as it would cost too much, and there is not that much money in the budget for this. Couples in PL do get £165 monthly per child but the abortion laws are inhumane (it's practically banned in all cases, women die in hospitals of sepsis while pregnant, etc.) My cousin had to give birth to a severely disabled baby last year that everybody knew would die just after birth (survived 2 months). The Catholic brain-washing is so severe, especially in small towns/villages that pregnant women don't even do the prenatal screening, as it doesn't matter - they would need to give birth anyway. So no wonder women don't want to have chldren there and no amount of money would entice me to get pregnant and give birth in Poland.

Stormwhatnow · 20/10/2025 10:32

Yeah the country where abortion is illegal. Prob not the best example to follow. White men are getting desperate for white women to produce more babies, particularly in countries like Poland where immigration is very low due to low wages and racism.

Fucking hell, what's wrong with you? "Oh dear"? So sad, too bad, now we have the doctors you educated, please die quietly?

Edited

Nothing is wrong with me. There is a great deal wrong with many corrupt governments around the world. If they were not, people seeking a better life for their families would not want to leave.

SeagullSam2027 · 19/10/2025 23:27

Steady on. You’ll be asked “what the fucking he’ll is wrong with you”? because you don’t have an issue with immigration.

Presumably that poster would want to ban British doctors from working overseas, too?

Upstartled · 20/10/2025 10:49

That poster is less worried about migration between similarly resourced countries, thanks. It just so happens that all countries who have a decent level of wealth all have declining birth rates.

EasternStandard · 20/10/2025 10:58

On Poland I’m surprised Tusk hasn’t looked at abortion policy since getting in.

On immigration it might be more immediate than waiting for dc to grow up to enter the workforce (which will decline anyway) but people arriving here grow old too and then you just get a Ponzi scheme where more are needed as they age.

angelos02 · 20/10/2025 11:05

You have to earn a really decent salary to be a net contributor. All of this 'immigration is good for the economy' has generally been de-bunked.

hattie43 · 20/10/2025 11:09

It would be too costly .

Not according to Farage and his ilk. We don't want more kids, we don't want immigrants. This country is nuts.

Careeradviceplease1234 · 20/10/2025 11:17

How do you think it would go down if we said that people who don't have children get a tax break and don't pay income tax?

By whom?

Pretty near every consultant surgeon at the Blackpool Vic is not British by birth. And at Preston Royal. Anecdotal but very obvious. Imagine they’re not the only health trusts.

Yep.

Almondflour · 20/10/2025 11:19

A few clarifications:

Tusk has looked into the abortion ban and has been trying to reverse it however he is in a coalition government and he doesn’t have the required majority.

For Polish standards the threshold is not low - these are not low income families who are exempt from income tax. It is in fact a very generous tax break for families. You should not base it on £ value.

There is additional child benefit in Poland worth about £160 per month per child. Again generous for Polish standards.

What are you wanting though? A population only increasing

That’s correct. They have very low birth rates and need to increase population but the country is very anti- immigration with super strict border controls. Ukrainians are pretty much the only significant migrant group allowed to settle in the country ( women and children only and need to work to get benefits from memory)

MO0N · 20/10/2025 12:01

Why do people speak as if having children is a hobby that people indulge in for their own benefit and amusement?
All this 'why should I pay for other people's kids'.
Birth rates are dropping, populations are under threat of collapse. Without people having children there is no more society, no one to staff services and businesses, no one to look after you in the hospital etc.
The bearing and raising of children is costly for parents in many ways. Parents (and usually women especially) bear the cost and society as a whole has the benefit of a new generation so that we can continue.

Even so I don't think this will succeed in raising the birth rate.
When people have children later in life they make more rational decisions, they weigh things up more carefully and they can see that being a parent involves a huge drain on your resources for very little return.

MO0N · 20/10/2025 12:04

Careeradviceplease1234 · 20/10/2025 11:17

It would be madness to reward and incentivise childlessness when childlessness is problematic for society.
Surely you can see that?

BreakingBroken · 20/10/2025 12:34

@MO0N You seem to ignore the fact that society has been ongoing for thousands of years with much smaller population numbers.
Some Ponzi schemes like the UK pension plan or social safety nets will of course change but society will not “collapse”.
Many countries are doing a hard roll back on the immigration of cultures that don’t blend well with the existing cultural norms.

Globally there are plenty of people to go round.

Lots of older people, fewer and fewer young people.
Birth rates are dropping all over the world.

Many highly populous African nations, the vast majority of citizens are under 30. Considerable poverty, very few opportunities unless you are part of the ruling elite. I would (do) welcome these young people to the UK.
