Could we do what Poland has done? Would you be in favour?

That’s ok we can’t just keep going up.

The global tfr rate is already at 2.2. All further global population growth is just seeing through the increase in lifespan expectancy.

I’ve got kids and no, I’d not be happy. Kick in the teeth to many hard working people.
We need properly subsidised childcare.
Or help with housing or lack of, for so many young people.

We do need more kids. The falling birthrate means there won't be enough workers to pay the pensions in a few years.

We don't need more kids, we need all the adult kids that aren't working to get a job.

We have junior doctors that can't get jobs because they don't have enough experience, there was a poster on here yesterday saying her daughter who was a nurse couldn't find a job. Loads of jobs are also being replaced by AI.

More kids just means we're going to end up with more benefits having to be paid - forever increasing the population is not a sustainable way to be paying pensions.

Up until the children reach what age? Surely it won't be for their entire lives? Give it a few generations and the majority will end up being tax-exempt, then what?

It basically increases the tax free threshold
to £30k for families with two or more children. It wouldn’t work here, as households aren’t taxed as a unit so it would be incredibly difficult to work out (and the amount saved in tax is pretty much equivalent as the amount received here in child benefit).

I also wouldn’t really fancy explaining to my sister who was desperate for a second child but has had to be put into menopause as part of her breast cancer treatment, that I don’t have to pay tax but she does.

We have something similar here in New Zealand. They combine both parents income and you get a rebate depending on income and amount of children. It's called Working for Families. It's in 2 parts, and parents who work over so many hours benefit from the 2nd part. There used to be a third part which you got for a new baby but I think they changed that.

It's to stave off birth rate decline in the population, not to spite those struggling to have children.

Instead of what Britain is doing and just letting in millions of migrants from all over the world who'll remain dependent on welfare because having a job is a fool's game these days.

Poland does things a bit differently.

Tinytimmy123 · 25/01/2026 19:04

If anything the tax break should be for people without children. Im only half joking.

Or let's all indulge in a bit of crazy talk and suggest taxing ...billionaires ...or even more ridiculous thought ...make them pay their workers a ...livable wage. 😳

zipadeeday · 25/01/2026 19:08

It's to try and combat the falling birth rate. However, no country in the world has ever managed to reverse a falling birth rate. Russian women are given the equivalent of 2 years salary as an incentive for a second/subsequent child and they still have one of the lowest birth rates in the world.

Shall we read the news properly, not just SM screenshot?

Poland's president signs off on new zero income tax law for parents with two children | Euronews
"The bill, presented by Karol Nawrocki in August, removes the income tax obligation on families earning up to 140,000 zloty (€32,973) a year.
...
According to calculations by the presidency, an average Polish family is expected to be around 1,000 zloty (€235) per month better off thanks to the new tax break."

Hardly different to child benefit cap lift here.

ETA: average salary in Poland is about EUR20k, so families in scope are considerably below the average.
