Making a new thread!

Please check in regular posters and welcome new people.

This is a super friendly thread to contribute to. We are all wanting to be as efficient as possible re spending but all have different budgets and priorities. No judgement here.

NSD (no spend day) for me.

JustStopItNora · 30/08/2025 05:28

I'd like to join if I may.

I have just paid an expensive vet bill and flowers i(international delivery) for an ill family member. Put a couple of children's watches into my Amazon basket as possible birthday gifts- just have to check they can be sent internationally also as they have batteries. I have also paid an expensive garden bill (hedge cutting as the council have complained). I have to be really frugal for a while as COL is really hitting us hard and the unexpected vet bills etc were a surprise. (We don't have pet insurance as our beloved cat was 21 when we got her from the RSPCA and had existing medical conditions... she's 23 now ❤).

I am aiming to spend no more than £5 on groceries today. Mainly need eggs, bread and alcohol-free cider as I am trying to also save money on non-essentials like booze.

I have some chicken drumsticks in the freezer for dinner. Saw a recipe on youtube where you marinate them with salad dressing (the youtuber used Italian but I will use caesar as that is what I have) and then rolls them in crushed cornflakes. We have some rejected cornflakes in the cupboard bought in hope when DS1 (who has eating issues) fancied them. Hopefully this will help me to use them up!

Hi juststopnora. My brother had eating issues then got into cooking and ate more of a variety. One of his main meals was homemade chicken nuggets with crushed cornflakes and and orange sauce. They were nice.

JustStopItNora · 30/08/2025 07:09

oooh! Love the idea of an orange sauce! that sounds good.

My summer plan was to get DS to cook on Saturdays. But life sort of got in the way. I need to focus on it really and not default to just doing it myself. :)

MaryGreenhill · 30/08/2025 07:38

Good morning everyone 🤗
Welcome to the thread @JustStopItNora 😁
Great idea re getting your Ds to help with the cooking fingers crossed it helps . I understand re the eating my Dd2 is exactly the same. She does all her own cooking though and it really does seem to help her expand her food choices .
NSD for me hopefully 🤗
Have a lovely weekend everyone ☺️

Morning All - it’s been a while and I’ve dropped off this thread.

It’s been a far from delightful few months and I’m not in the greatest of places. (Most) legal stuff signed off. I wanted it over so took what was offered. Am now spending £10ks cleaning up the mess. Had a brief dalliance with a chap (rather complicated he’s currently mid-very ugly divorce with understandably next to no bandwidth) and I’m unfortunately still holding a torch for him while having to work with him and hoping we might be able to salvage something in the future. Work is awful. Have a torn muscle in my calf so am dragging myself into next week when I’m off on a 120km mountain run.

I’ve not been very frugal since I stopped posting. Hoping returning to better habits will help me find my feet. Rather comforting to see familiar names. Plan for today is to not spend much.

Taytocrisps · 30/08/2025 13:43

A quick 'Hello' before I get stuck into laundry and housework etc. It's cold and damp today and I've said, "To hell with it", and put on the heating. Just for today though.

DD has gone to Electric Picnic (music festival) and taken my car with her. So I didn't do my usual supermarket shop this morning. But I bought some groceries in the local shop. I didn't spend as much as usual, because I was limited in what I could carry. I stocked up on extra cat food and cat litter last weekend, so I wouldn't run out.

Spends so far today:-

  • Hairdresser - €45 including tip
  • Groceries - €16.18
  • Groceries (same shop) - € 7.50 (after I paid, I remembered a few more things)
  • Butcher - €15.00

I also paid DD approx. €55 via Revolut because she picked up some groceries and meat for me during the week, when she was buying alcohol supplies for Electric Picnic.

I haven't needed to buy as much food, because DD has been away since Wednesday (she stayed over with her boyfriend and then headed to the festival on Thursday). So I've made a small saving there.

Also, I've an event coming up which will necessitate a fancy outfit. I've a dress and shrug from a wedding last year which will be just perfect. Except the shrug has been missing for a few months. I thought I might have to buy a new one, which would have been a total waste of money. Anyway, I went hunting for it this morning and found it and did a triumphant dance.

Exciting plans for today are (1) laundry, (2) clean the fridge and (3) blitz the sitting room. Dinner will be baby new potatoes and a steak and kidney pie from the butcher. Then I'm going to light some candles and indulge in 'The Thursday Murder Club' on Netflix.

Hope your Saturday is more exciting than mine Grin.

I'll be back in the morning for a quick catch up.

Thank you for the thread @MaryGreenhill, love the title.

Welcome new people and returning folk.

Will post fully later but all very quiet here in terms of money. We have spent a bit more on food, but that’s because we had guests last night so extra food and some wine.

Will post menu plan etc later. 😊
