Refugees

Am I wrong to feel the people of this country are using the "Cost of Living" narrative to justify not helping migrants and refugees who seek refuge for themselves? Neglecting our British values, passing the buck to Rwanda and European countries. The attitude towards those fleeing war zones and risking everything to come to this country on harsh waters is outrageous!

I was in the corner shop today and over heard a couple of women making digs about foreigners. To make unjustified claims such as "it makes us unsafe", "we don't have jobs" or my personal favourite - "they don't integrate into society." What on earth has happened to our British values? To make others feel welcome and to help others in need of help!

Every human has a right to safety, affordable housing, food, water, education and a healthcare system. Those are all things our wonderful country can provide and quite frankly has a moral obligation to provide for those coming from other parts of the world that aren't as fortunate as us.

Do you work for the Government OP? Perhaps the ‘Nudge Unit’? You sound as though you are trying to influence…

Why should I? You started this thread berating others for not doing anything but you seem to do precious little yourself. I don’t want a strange man in my flat thanks and let’s face it, nearly all the refugees are men.

This is what I’m campaigning, to make in law and government mandate that spare rooms are occupied. Not all refugees are men, choose a woman if it means that much to you.

Op your family can share a room , why not lead by example

Maireas · 04/02/2024 09:26

So, you want a law that "spare rooms are occupied". How unfortunate that all your rooms are occupied!

So you want to make it law that people are forced to house strangers just because they have a spare room while you do fuck all yourself from a practical point of view. I don’t want anyone in my flat, male or female thanks.

I do a lot more than most while raising two below 10.

'They are occupied.'

@InayaWoo

But you said more needs to be done. So do more. Shift your privileged children into one room and DO MORE!!!

I know. Read my post.
It's unfortunate that they're occupied, otherwise you could house a refugee!

The rooms are occupied. I’m talking about empty rooms.

Those reason are valid. Humans have moved around the world for centuries! This whole nations and border thing is modern concept that is diabolical.

You lost me at borders being a modern concept. Now you're also saying they're diabolical? Good grief, we're not going to get a reasonable discussion out of you.

whowhatwerewhy · 04/02/2024 09:33

Your two under 10 could share a room, that's one refugee housed .

And I would gladly house someone from a war torn country.

I'm not having a go at the NHS, I agree they do a good job given the dire situation.

But surely wages are relevant to cost of living? £30k a year would go a long way in another country, sure, but with the cost of living in this country its not likely enough to support a family. This is why we have universal credit, food banks, people are struggling with the cost of living. Housing is not affordable.

Here's an idea - get a couple of your kids to double up in a bedroom. Problem solved!

SulkySeagull · 04/02/2024 09:34

You are campaigning that every spare room is occupied? Seriously? You think everyone should be forced to take in refugees and house and feed them, in their own private houses? Alongside their children? This has got to be a wind up…

OP, many of these men arriving on boats are economic migrants, they have no need to be here. People can’t lose their houses they’ve worked hard for to ensure someone in a worse off situation gets a slightly better lifestyle!

InayaWoo · 04/02/2024 09:35

That doesn’t solve the fact British citizens want refugees sent to Rwanda! A poor country, unsafe! When this country has the means to help. They choose to spend money on sending them to Rwanda.
