Refugees

Am I wrong to feel the people of this country are using the "Cost of Living" narrative to justify not helping migrants and refugees who seek refuge for themselves? Neglecting our British values, passing the buck to Rwanda and European countries. The attitude towards those fleeing war zones and risking everything to come to this country on harsh waters is outrageous!

I was in the corner shop today and over heard a couple of women making digs about foreigners. To make unjustified claims such as "it makes us unsafe", "we don't have jobs" or my personal favourite - "they don't integrate into society." What on earth has happened to our British values? To make others feel welcome and to help others in need of help!

Every human has a right to safety, affordable housing, food, water, education and a healthcare system. Those are all things our wonderful country can provide and quite frankly has a moral obligation to provide for those coming from other parts of the world that aren't as fortunate as us.

OP appears unbothered by this.

So you agree that something needs to change in the 5th wealthiest nation?

I’m talking about refugees. Britons have access to the help they need because they’re citizens.

You're naive if you really think that's the case.

Maireas · 04/02/2024 09:16

InayaWoo · 04/02/2024 09:15

They take them.

Well, that's quite contradictory to the information I've been reading. Have you got a link to how much support they give?

I think you should lead by example

Prinnny · 04/02/2024 09:16

The UK is in the state it’s in partly due to immigration. We don’t have the infrastructure for such a population. Housing, schooling, healthcare are all buckling under the pressure whilst gangs and crime is soaring.

This!

You have actually agreed here that you are deluded !
Probably best to leave it there!

Plenty of single people in the U.K that can take refugees into a spare room.

So really @InayaWoo , you are another nimby.

"not in my back yard"

You complain about the problem and cast blame on others, yet you offer no solution yourself.

Okayyyy....

sparrow4 · 04/02/2024 09:17

Or my personal favourite - "they don't integrate into society."

This is undoubtedly true in some communities, My sister in law was married at 13 in Pakistan to an extended family member (not my brother). She came to live in the U.K. at that point on a forged passport showing her age as 18. She had three children in the U.K. by 16, her first at 13.

She is in her 50s now and still cannot read or write. It has massively limited her financial independence and made her beholden to others. She lives in a Muslim community (with my brother) that has not integrated into general U.K. society and where her rights and options are very different to mine.

I have plenty of Muslim friends who live very different and liberated lives but, having seen it first hand, there are plenty of people who have chosen not to integrate into society.

So you won’t move your family living arrangements around to accommodate a refugee but because I’m single I should open up my tiny spare room to house a stranger? Hmm no thanks. OP is very much a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ sort of person.

Right, so - what do you do?

SulkySeagull · 04/02/2024 09:18

@InayaWoo we DO help them though, hence the reason they keep coming! We are far more accommodating than many of the other countries people travel through to get here.

Equal rights to what exactly?

Plenty of British families without homes let alone affordable housing, schools are over subscribed, God forbid you need health care because the NHS is at its knees. Families who can't afford to feed themselves or cloth their children hence food banks and clothes banks.

Saying we are one of the worlds wealthiest countries is irrelevant when the cost of living does not make us all automatically wealthy and able to provide these things for ourselves let alone anyone else.

Ok do that then. Contact the housing refugee charity

SulkySeagull · 04/02/2024 07:43

Do you honestly believe all of the men arriving on boats are escaping war torn countries? And if they are, why have they left the women and children behind?

I didn't know France was a war torn country
Well we learn something new everyday

jolies1 · 04/02/2024 09:21

InayaWoo · 04/02/2024 08:50

My solution is equal rights. Houses, like you live in.

Where are these houses coming from, OP? Who is paying for them?

I work in housing. We don’t have enough stock for families, let alone single males. We’ve got young children with the whole family sleeping in one room. Families living in damp, unsafe accommodation. Families living in B&B’s.

Bululu · 04/02/2024 09:22

Yes, what happened to the British values? So ironic eh?

To everything as equal citizens. The NHS does an amazing job, especially given that people make stupid appointments because it’s “free” and clog up real emergencies. If you earn £30,000 you’re into the top 1% in the world! That’s how wealthy we are in this country!

Why should I? You started this thread berating others for not doing anything but you seem to do precious little yourself. I don’t want a strange man in my flat thanks and let’s face it, nearly all the refugees are men.
