I was going to have lunch with a friend today who suggested weatherspoons (cheap and cheerful). I could not believe that their 3 small plates have increased from £10 to £15! Which led me onto thinking what else has jumped up a considerable amount product wise! We shop at Aldi so I haven't noticed a big difference YET.

I shop at Aldi and I’m surprised you haven’t noticed any changes! Few examples
Their version of Nutella has gone from
£1.05 ish to £1.35

pack of 5 single twirls was 99p now £1.15

these are two insignificant ones but the two I can remember. I think it’d be better to shop around but that takes time, money and storage space.

40pk Whiskas has increased from €14.99 to €20.95, and 12ltr cat litter has jumped from €18 to €25. I buy them online now, even with shipping it's significantly cheaper.

Supermarket own brand chocolate bourbons have doubled in price from 0.45c to 0.98c, huge increase percentage-wise.

Honestly try the M&S version… 65p a tin and I think I prefer it

Yes, lots of competitively priced foods in M&S.

Big Galaxy bars (not the massive sharing ones, you know the ones I mean!) In Tesco, they used to be £1, then they increased the price but sold them for £1 on special offer all the time. Now, they are never on special offer and cost £1.70!

500ml bottles of Diet Coke/Pepsi Max, etc. I've seen them priced at £1.85 in some places, you can get a 1.25 litre bottle for cheaper or the same price in the same shop!

Everything has gone up so much, it's very worrying. And yes, like PP I've noticed the super cheap dried pasta is often not restocked so people are forced to buy the next cheapest option which is double the price.

I wonder what impact this is having on food banks. Are they getting fewer donations? I used to donate a few items in the supermarket box each time I went shopping but I can no longer afford to do so as often. Are they getting more people using them? How will they cope if this goes on for much longer?

What is everyone doing to help
with this or is there a thread on saving money when food shopping?

DottieUncBab · 28/02/2023 21:04

Royal Canin dog food, 45.99 to 62.99!

You must be joking about not noticing Aldi price increases. Some things are so expensive in there now. Waitrose is actually cheaper on some items at the moment! I was truly shocked in Aldi.

Agreed. I went along with my mum last week and a lot of the prices were more expensive than Ocado.

Cakeandcardio · 28/02/2023 21:06

I noticed corned beef was £3.30 a tin in Asda. I used to think of corned beef as a cheap meat!

evilharpy · 28/02/2023 21:07

Pringles. This was way back last August but they were £3.30 for a tube in Co-Op. Couldn't believe it, it's stuck in my head for some reason.

Dymaxion · 28/02/2023 21:07

We don't have a Tesco's here so can't compare their prices. I am a bit of a supermarket whore and I go into Waitrose, Sainsburys, Morrisons and Aldi and Lidl.
The things I have noticed really jump in price is razors and razor blades, oil of any variety, butter and milk. Wine has for fortunately remained fairly static !

I buy lidls cola now, pepsi and coke are at least three times the price and imo not as nice.
I agree with previous poster about OXO cubes, I paid £3 recently 😧

This what I do now. Lidles max cola.

paulaparticles · 28/02/2023 21:08

Lots of stuff but most recently tesco microwave rice from 35p to 50p. I bought in bulk. Now looking into a rice cooker.

SmallbutMighty1 · 28/02/2023 21:09

Definitely cat food. Used to be a tenner for a big box. £13.70!!!!

Lemondrizzle20 · 28/02/2023 21:10

When's your article due??

OrangeKnot · 28/02/2023 21:11

A greetings card, nothing special, from Between The Lines - £4.50! I nearly put it back

Usernamesonly · 28/02/2023 21:14

@OrangeKnot See I would get my cards in The Card factory. I used to be able to get a nice card for 99p, they are now around £1.40 or more!

Buxton sparkling water 8 pack - now £3 used to be £1.50.

Pampers nappies - used to get 3 packs for £15 in waitrose. Now £11 per pack and I think, 3 for £22.

Oxo cubes and heinz ketchup, both now really expensive.

Batiste dry shampoo is now £3.99!

But things like my face wipes, root dye, shampoo and deodorant, all which I expected to go up, haven't.

I shop between Waitrose/Tesco/sainsburys for supermarkets and am doing ok navigating price rises by using offers.

Shimmermetimbers · 28/02/2023 21:16

Oh and M and S! They have some good prices.

Usernamesonly · 28/02/2023 21:16

Should also mention that I have a phone contract out with O2. I have been paying £37 a month for the phone itself and the data package. My phone bill will be increasing with the mass rise in inflation along with O2's extra charge to £43 a month! I'm due to go on maternity leave in 3 months and worrying that the money I have been saving aside is going to be no use due to the sudden increase in expenses all around! My only saving grace is that the mortgage is fixed for another four years. Worrying times ☹️
