I was going to have lunch with a friend today who suggested weatherspoons (cheap and cheerful). I could not believe that their 3 small plates have increased from £10 to £15! Which led me onto thinking what else has jumped up a considerable amount product wise! We shop at Aldi so I haven't noticed a big difference YET.

Ugh. Dog food. from £29 for 15kg to £46 for 15kg. Apparently on mumsnet as a single mum on universal credit I shouldn’t have a pet but
a) if I swap to something cheaper it will probably make him ill (I’ve been though 10 different varieties in 9 years) costing £100 a time at the vets and
b) He’s 9 and I had him back when I was one of the haves, not the have nots.

I know, I know. And to make it worse I also have and use a toilet brush. What a cretin.

@Ariela just spotted Tunnocks tea cakes £1.10 for 6 pack in Asda, a bit cheaper. Just treated us to a box, and they're as scrummy as always

Thanks. I just spotted them in Waitrose £1.15. Co-op will get the idea soon (when they don't sell). Asda would cost me more than 5p to drive there.

pinkroseapp · 05/03/2023 16:02

I was in Asda today to get some tea bags, I use to buy twinings earl grey large boxes with 100 tea bags in it. It used to be £3.50 and now it’s £6!!! I went got Asda own brand instead.😮‍💨 it’s crazy!!

Oat milk. DS is 1 and lactose intolerant so he gets through gallons of the stuff. I’m also lactose intolerant and the brand I used to get for just over £1 is now over £2.

Dillydallydilly · 06/03/2023 22:20

Also not an item per se, but car insurance - outrageous!! I’ve just paid more than I’ve paid in nearly 20 years.

Chicken;thé cost is ridiculous;I can't justify £12 for enough chicken breasts to make a curry etc for the 6 of us in our house.Have had to start buying chicken thighs but the ones with skin and bone on/in as the boneless ones are getting expensive too;I cut the skin/bone off/out myself

Same here. I usually cut off after cooking as it’s easier.

I can remember by grandparents shaking their heads in the 70s as we joined the EEC. "It won't take long until butter costs 5 shillings" they said.

I remember my gran having free butter because the EEC were producing too much, and just gave it away. Think they called it the butter mountains.

I think chicken thighs are so much more succulent than breasts anyway, and like that you can keep them on the bone.

I'm saving money, but it's a coincidence as I'm on a diet, so making my own healthy soups. The purpose was to eat more healthy, but I'm saving money in the process, as can make soup for about £5 plus ingredients in the cupboards such as seasoning and stock, that can last for days, or enough to put some in the freezer.

I love that shop. It got me through the lockdowns.

Waitrose loo roll. It is really good quality but I just can't believe I am handing over a note for 9 bog rolls of essentially paper.

We had some of that. It would have still been a thing in 1984/5 because my dad was a striking miner and it was in some of the food parcels we received.

I don't know where the butter came from but we also had a few things donated by German and Polish miners welfare type associations so we were introduced to things like that long life rye bread you sometimes see in Aldi and Lidl and giant jars of gherkins which we hadn't really seen before.

Toilet paper has got more expensive because the industry, along with steel and glassmaking is very energy intensive so their production costs will have gone up massively.

A lot of equipment and companies in the industry have links with Germany, Spain and Finland so Brexit will also have increased their costs.

Plus there is a lot of increased demand for material used to make it (wood related) due to increases in online shopping and alternative fuels.

TheWitchersWife · 09/03/2023 08:06

When we was getting a big bed for my eldest we looked at a shorty bunk bed from IKEA.
It would have been around mid 2019.
The bed cost £85/£90. I can't remember precisely.
The same bed is now £149!!!

Aldi and Lidl do packs of 24 rolls of good 3 ply soft paper for £6.99, it's the cheapest I've found, might be worth you switching just for that item?

I agree cat litter costs are through the roof and cat food!

Have you seen the Tesco own brand cat litter only £1.95 for a 10 litre bag. It's the best price out there, so I've been buying that every week. Click the link to see on the Tesco website.
Tesco Own Brand Cat Litter

Almost all the supermarkets (Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsburys, Aldi, Lidl, Asda) do a cheap cat litter 10L bag for £1.95 but Aldi, Tesco and Sainsburys are lightweight litter and Morrisons, Asda and Lidl's cheap ones are clumping cat litter which I find to be so much better at absorbing the smells. Just pointing it out in case it's helpful to anyone.

xogossipgirlxo · 09/03/2023 11:42

Loo roll is still shocking me. It's now £8.50 in Lidl and much worse quality. Used to be fiver.

24 rolls of 3 ply £6.99 in Aldi still, cheapest good ones around now I think.

@hamsterchump I purchased some this week and thought it was good value but once I got home I noticed it was fragranced. Do you know if they are all scented? Not keen on a fragranced loo roll but this price is better .

Yes that's right, about 1984. I was a small child and was impressed my gran had free butter from the EEC lol. Oh that's interesting about the Polish and German miners helping out the British. I learnt something new.
Yes, Germany still produce a lot. While we were making millions unemoyed in the 80s, Germany was still an industrial giant, with well paid workers in good conditions, producing world class products people are willing to pay good prices for.
It's surprising the amount of people that didn't realise leaving the EU would increase prices. Maybe as the politicians talking them into it didn't mention that. I think it's quite a lot more we have to pay for importation from the EU now?
I don't understand why we didn't stay just in the European Market like Norway and Iceland, as then prices wouldn't have been affected. I suppose people just didn't understand and nowhere was providing the accurate information.

I forget if it was Aldi or Lidl or if they're both the same, but I found the toilet paper from there less soft than other supermarket's own brand, but suppose that's just a first world problem and it still does the job.
I sometimes buy Waitrose paper if I get the money off vouchers, they send in the email. If you use the Waitrose loyalty card, they often then send the vochers for things you've bought before, and then you scan on your phone at the till. Although it's usually only 50p and their paper is more expensive anyway.

Isn't cat litter usually just plain fuller's earth? My cat died a few years ago so don't buy it any more, but remember seeing a posh clear one that was expensive. Can't imagine what that was made from.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/03/2023 15:33

There's lots of different types of cat litter at a range of prices. The cheaper ones aren't necessarily the most economical.

I've tried a wide range and am currently using a clumping wood based one (Greenwoods) that is about £20 a massive sack from Zooplus. It lasts far far longer than the cheapest one as it's very effective at clumping so stays cleaner for longer.

I've only just got through a bag I opened at Christmas and we have around half a dozen cats/kittens using it (we do know how many cats we have but foster for a rescue so it varies).

With this many cats, I'd estimate that we'd use at least 2/3 of the cheap bags each week, which as well as working out more expensive, would make our bin very very heavy.

However, you need to be able to buy in bulk and store, and not everyone will be able to manouvre the big bags.

Dillydallydilly · 09/03/2023 22:46

Fairy liquid. I swear it was about £1/1.50 last year. It’s now double that

ChopinandChangin · 10/03/2023 11:16

@Dillydallydilly, I was just coming to post that. My Tesco order has just arrived. A large Fairy Original was £2. Last time I ordered it was end November when it was also £2. End November it was 780mls for £2, today £654mls for £2.

Also, this one really left me staggered … Sensodyne Pronamel 100ml toothpaste. Last ordered 23 Nov, was £3. Today … £5.45!!! That’s an 81% rise in less than 4 months. Insane and clearly the last time it goes in my shopping basket!
