I was going to have lunch with a friend today who suggested weatherspoons (cheap and cheerful). I could not believe that their 3 small plates have increased from £10 to £15! Which led me onto thinking what else has jumped up a considerable amount product wise! We shop at Aldi so I haven't noticed a big difference YET.

Cat food. A box of Whiskas pouches was 2 boxes for £5. It's now £4.75 for just one.

I’m sure there was something on the news about a lot of the supermarkets having their profits increase, which really pee’d me off. Their costs go up so they have to charge more, so their turnover goes up: all fine. But for profits to increase means they’re price gouging during a COL crisis..

Gas and electric

June 2019 Electric
19.28p/Day
15.34p/kWh

Feb 2023 Electric (Price cap)
38.94p per day
35.13p per kWh

June 2019 Gas
17.06p/Day
3.07p/kWh

Feb 2023 Gas (Price cap)
28.48p per day
10.308p per kWh

And they're going up another 20% in April 🙈

Tunnocks Teacakes used to be £1.05 in Waitrose and £1.10 in the local garage Co-op. Every now and then we'd buy them as a treat.
I was in the garage at the weekend and said to DD we'd have some, as we've not had any for some time. I refuse to pay £2 for a box of 6, so we didn't have any!

As for oil I can now buy in at 69p/litre, was 71.65p when I filled up last, was 43.5p when I filled up previously in 2020 or 2021. It is still cheaper than 2012-2014 when it was in the 90p-110p range for most of the year.
I'm hopeful we can buy more this summer when it's hot and that the over supply will dip the price to 40 something pence.

The problem with a fuel price cap is we will ONLY get charged the cap - I can see the wholesale price of electricity dropping well below the need for this cap, but, because the government set it, the price will remain, and the high price will prevent any competition between the electricity companies, they're all raking in the profit as the wholesale price drops..

Same thing is happening with diesel fuel - DH has a fuel card and currently it's 120.98 per litre + VAT = 145.2 per litre, having dropped a further 3p this weekend. Because there is no competition on price at the moment, especially from the supermarkets, the price has remained far, far higher than petrol yet the wholesale price is similar to petrol. Our local pump price has remained £171.9 for weeks and only today dropped to 168.9 (after the fuel card price has dropped every week since Christmas)

I buy a box of fruit from a crowd funding site for European farmers ( I really love those massive lemons you get abroad) . They have said olives were affected badly by the weather so olive oil was either blended or hellishly expensive this year.

@FuckeNell @Lifeomars

I just ordered for the office today with our stationery order, and admittedly less choice but all Pukkas teas £2.60 but to get free delivery you have to spend £50 - at Staples.

PandoraRocks · 01/03/2023 00:23

Barefoot Merlot Californian red - £6 two weeks ago in Tesco now £7.50! A lovely tasting wine so I'm gutted. Heinz soup £1.70 a tin 😱I stick to own brand soup now.

UB40andaglassofwine · 01/03/2023 00:26

And the worst part is.... the prices will not ever go down now they are at these prices 🤯

LipbalmOrKnickers · 01/03/2023 00:26

Not wildly exciting I admit, but a bag Lidl of grated cheddar has steadily crept up from £1.35 to £1.99 over the last year.

VerbenaGirl · 28/02/2023 20:17

Cat medicine from vet.

Any medicine from the vets. Mine sells a combined flea/worm tablet for dogs for £50 a pop. £50!

Mothership4two · 01/03/2023 00:30

Butter

In my local Co-op they have Heinz soup for £2 a tin atm.

Jumbojade · 01/03/2023 00:30

Small box of Maltesers, were £1.50 (£1 when “on offer”) prior to lockdown, seen “on offer” today in Home Bargains at £2.25!

Virgin broadband - renegotiated to £30 per month at end of last year. Feeling pleased with myself for going to the bother of doing this. Email last week - they are putting it up to £39. That's a 30% increase in 6 months.

Also coming on to say Virgin media and the exact same price and increase! However, you can phone to cancel the contract then in a couple of days they’ll call you to let you stay at your original price. 😁

Heinz crap ravioli in a tin (guilty pleasure) is £2.20 a tin now! I know it's a silly example really, as it's hardly a staple, but that was my go to cheapo lunch when I was a student and it now seems quite expensive for what is surely the most grisly bits of the cow. I think Heniz baked beans are at least £1 now too. I might need to drop my Heinz habit.

Try the M&S 50p beans they’re excellent.

Watching Heinz soups approach the £2 mark is insanity. Alpro Almond milk is now £2, a far cry from the £1.50 days when it was always £1 when on offer.

Nchangeagain · 01/03/2023 00:54

On 23/2/23, I compared a shop from 23/7/22 at Aldi and was able to check the price of everything on that list bar a pack of napkins, for which I substituted a roll of kitchen paper (similar price) and it had gone from £82 to £99.96, which is an increase of 20.8%. It was all pretty standard stuff too and was made up of different 66 items.

Also 2kg fresh chicken breast fillets was £1.21 cheaper in Morrisons when compared to Aldi a few weeks ago.

GobbieMaggie · 01/03/2023 01:00

Horse feed.

Tromso · 01/03/2023 02:41

There are a lot of people lying on this thread. Yes, some of the price increases are true, but why anyone feels the need to lie on a Mumsnet thread and pretend a litre of UHT milk was 37p a year ago is beyond me. Probably the same people who lie about the price of Freddos.

Threads such as this are really unhelpful and just fuel panic, and enable people to spread untruths.

Yes, prices are wildly up on what we are used to, and yes, it's shit, but what is this going to do except make us feel worse about it?

madamepresident · 01/03/2023 04:27

VictoriaBun · 28/02/2023 19:26

I saw Heinz tomato soup for £1.50 a can !

I pay about that much where I am and it's imported !! Wow 😯

dadadeedadada · 01/03/2023 05:54

For me it's bisto best gravy up from 2.49 (price matched with Aldi) now it's 4. On own brand now. I won't even buy the cheaper bisto gravy.

TinyCactusInAPot · 01/03/2023 07:31

@Tromso some people like to fuel panic

But price increases are very real

I grew up with parents who were used to eating lots of simple hearty food, and would never buy us crisps or "shop cake" or sweet drinks

It's useful to feel those things are not essentials

Though I do walk around the supermarket saying "fuck off" at a lot a prices now...

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 01/03/2023 07:33

Pasta - 35p to nearly a pound a packet (500g). And that's in Aldi!

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 01/03/2023 07:35

Hullse · 01/03/2023 00:37

Same here - although it was £23 to £30, and there isn't a comparable service available cheaper anywhere else, so no point in leaving (or pretending to leave so they'll offer me a better deal).

crossstitchingnana · 01/03/2023 07:38

Cadbury's hot chocolate was £2.50 up to £3 in one jump.

tapdancingmum · 01/03/2023 07:43

Heinz tomato soup. I was looking at it the other day thinking I'm not paying £1.70 a tin or 4 for £5.00 on the offer when I noticed the 4 pack next to it on the shelf. £3.99 for 4, so that's what I bought.

I don't understand the difference in price. If they can do a 4 pack for £3.99 why isn't a tin £1.00? I stood there for ages making sure it was the same tin, same size, same everything.

What item price increase has shocked you the most?

It gives us a chance to vent!! None of my friends have dogs and so if I say ‘Jesus dog food has gone up by x’ I don’t really get a reaction or a response. Same as if I say waffles and fish fingers have gone up, my friends are mostly at the nappy stage with their children if they have them at all, so they’ll just think ‘oh well, can you not do without?’
