£200 payment oil/biomass

Just incase anyone hadn’t heard about the government paymet for oil heating /biomass properties … some might need to apply for it. It’s due next month. I only recently found out about it.

The government is also providing a further £200 Alternative Fuel Payment (AFP) to help those households in Great Britain who use alternative fuels such as biomass or heating oil to meet energy costs this winter. Most households eligible for the AFP support in Great Britain, will receive payment automatically via their electricity supplier in February, with no need to take any action. Those households who will need to apply for the AFP, for example because they do not have a relationship with an electricity supplier, will be able to do so in February, through the same GOV.UK portal as the one that will be used to apply for support under the EBSS Alternative Funding scheme.

Thanks for the info @Ricco12 , I've been wondering when we'd hear how they're planning to arrange this.

Stupid question time. How will our electricity suppliers know we use heating oil?

Bemyclementine · 04/01/2023 22:53

I was wondering how they know too!

Ricco12 · 04/01/2023 22:54

Only recent info I have seen says this

As there is no central register of people who do not use mains gas for their heating, BEIS said it was "working at pace with stakeholders to identify the best method of identifying eligible customers and making payments to them in a way which is as easy as possible".

Anyone have an update on this? I contacted octopus on 18th jan and they said they didn't have exact details of how the oil payment will be paid out at that stage.

RiderOfTheBlue · 05/02/2023 10:53

From CAB website...

If you use alternative fuels such as biomass or heating oil, the government will give you a £200 payment to help with your energy bills. This is called the ‘Alternative Fuel Payment’.

Your electricity supplier will make the payment automatically in February 2023. If you don’t have a contract with an electricity supplier, you’ll be able to apply for the payment on GOV.UK from February.

RiderOfTheBlue · 08/02/2023 16:41

Update...

I've had an email from my electricity supplier (SSE) today, confirms they'll pay the £200 to me this month.

Hopefully you'll all be receiving similar emails.

Badbudgeter · 08/02/2023 22:24

Exciting stuff. A friend who is with SSE told me the same thing this afternoon. I’m with edf and haven’t heard anything yet.

Wowwellokthen · 09/02/2023 07:32

I tried to contact EDF about this yesterday and the person I was on live chat with:

  1. didn't really know what the scheme was
  2. said EDF hadn't "signed up" for it

So no idea at the moment!

FatSealSmugSoup · 09/02/2023 07:38

I got my email from SSE yesterday. I do not use alternative fuel (aside personal body mass) - and I have never claimed I did. 🤷‍♀️

GCAcademic · 09/02/2023 07:45

Anyone know when / how Octopus is paying this?

Wafflefudge · 09/02/2023 07:47

I'm with Bulb/ Octopus and haven't heard anything yet.
Anyone else heard or had payment?

I think it’ll be going to anyone not on mains gas tbh. The cost of deciding who’d be entitled would outweigh savings.

GCAcademic · 09/02/2023 08:42

Yes, they've used a database to establish which households aren't on the mains gas grid. They don't have the ability to determine who uses (e.g.) oil and who has a heat pump.

FatSealSmugSoup · 09/02/2023 08:50

That was the only explanation I could come up with too (no mains gas). There probably was a coal fire here when they fitted the meters 30 years ago though.

GCAcademic · 09/02/2023 19:28

@Wafflefudge I contacted Octopus. Apparently they are waiting for the government to pay them the money and don’t know when that will be.

Bemyclementine · 09/02/2023 21:56

I'm with Eon. Nothing from them yet

Diversion · 09/02/2023 21:59

Nothing from EDF either although the rest of the road is on gas and the folks who owned our house from new refused to pay to have the gas pipe taken up the drive. When we costed it up 22 years ago as the new owners we simply couldn't afford it so stuck with oil. We will probably have to apply through this currently non existent portal.

toastfiend · 09/02/2023 22:01

Another who hasn't heard anything from Eon yet. They did send a letter about it a while ago to say it was coming, but no further confirmation since.

Wowwellokthen · 13/02/2023 19:20

Any updates?

whatat · 13/02/2023 19:23

Just checked my Sainsburys Energy account and it went in yesterday

Wowwellokthen · 13/02/2023 19:24

Interesting - would you have thought that Sainsbury's energy would have known you use heating oil? I don't understand how EDF will know I use heating oil as they only provide my electricity. 🤯

Chickdaft · 13/02/2023 19:26

I had the same email from OVO a week ago saying £200 would be added to my account this month. No idea when but I dare say every property not on the actual gas grid path will get this email as tracking the gas grid areas will be easier than tracking those not on it. I’m on a Scottish island so easier to see by location who has gas/has not. Be the same for most areas I’d think. Those in an area with mains gas but choose oil instead may need to apply?
Be nice when it comes though 😊

A27009D56 · 13/02/2023 21:13

Just checked my Eon Next account and the £200 was put into my account today

Bemyclementine · 13/02/2023 21:21

Same here, 200 added to my eon account. Bit odd given that it's for oil users! I was hoping for it to go into my bank.

Reggiebo · 13/02/2023 21:26

They don't need to know what alternative you use. They know that you only have electric.
