To want to leave the UK

vickisponge98 · 19/11/2022 22:54

Am I the only one that wants to leave this country? My salary hasn’t increased more than 1% per year in the last 7 years… I hate that the UK voted Brexit… I read today the financial shocks of the autumn budget are worse than the 2008 crash?! Why aren’t we more angry?!!

The NHS isn't my favourite model and it's on its knees not just because of social care but because of years of underfunding. But visiting the GP in Ireland can cost you €50. That's a lot.

felded · 20/11/2022 09:15

I suppose I think it's good you have the option to see the GP even though it costs you €50.

felded · 20/11/2022 09:18

More & more people I know are getting pushed into private because of waiting lists. Obviously they are lucky they have this option

I’ve always been able to see the GP so I’ll take the free at point of use version. Not that we use it that much it’d be harder for others if not free and they use it more.

Let’s all migrate to Croatia

I’ve been increasingly angry for the last six years. I hate the damage the Tories have done to the UK. That being said I’ve lived in 3 other countries and am always homesick when I’m not here. It took me 15 years to get back, so don’t want to uproot again. It is so beautiful here. If only we had a different, more compassionate government.

Surely if we are angry with the govt, the best thing to do is to stay and vote them out.

If we want better for the NHS, we stay and campaign for it. Support the nurses when they strike.

People's outrage helped get rid of Truss & Kwarteng. We can do it again. Write to your mps, get vocal, kick up a fuss. Not bugger off to the sun !

Calling in from Italy with a £4 cauliflower. (And about £8 for 12 paracetomol, though I buy those online for about £5)

I'd agree that food prices in the UK seem higher because of how cheap they've been in the past. There was a thread about the price of pasta the other week; people saying a bag of pasta had gone up to 45p. Feck me, we'd dream of paying that here.

I am a teacher and self-employed because I'm not Italian. Last financial year my gross was €21,000. I paid just under €7,000 in tax and a further €3,000 in NI.

Unless you are very poor you pay for your children's schoolbooks. Second hand you're looking at about £200 a year. Double that and add a bit if new.

My daughter has just started uni in the UK and is amazed how cheap everything is.

It really serves little purpose to make comparisons between countries if not factoring in everything else.

£8 for 12 paracetamol 😮 I paid 26p yesterday.

felded · 20/11/2022 09:23

@MarshaBradyo well of course you would but your experience isn't universal, which is the point.

I came back with half of Wilko in my hand luggage last week!

roarfeckingroarr · 20/11/2022 09:24

Mumsnet is pretty angry. Angry threads like this every day.

Doesn't it get exhausting being so angry? I try to just make the best of it and turn off the news. There will be an election in 17 months. Act then.

MarshaBradyo · 20/11/2022 09:24

Appreciating the cauliflower chat, I eat a lot of it

I don’t mind if people leave, better than staying and moaning, but it’s not the current government haters leaving that is so problematic it’s when top end go and then tax burden falls down the scale. Blair was ok as he managed to appeal to all levels.

Artygirlghost · 20/11/2022 09:28

it is a global crisis BUT it is being made worse in the UK by Brexit and awful successive Tory governments. So I think this is why it feels especially hopeless here at the moment.

I do think it will get better though especially once the Tories are kicked out.

But if you are able to live and work somewhere else for a while it makes sense to give it a go.

Maybe try finding a job abroad for a year first and if you are a homeowner rent your home in the UK while you travel/settle somewhere else so you always have the opportunity to come back if you end up not liking your new life.

I still don’t think charging for GP is a good way to go. It puts people off and they get sicker.

There probably are other models that could work better than the NHS for an ageing population but it depends who pays what.

username8888 · 20/11/2022 09:28

Why are we not more angry? Because we're grown ups who realise the whole world went through a pandemic and a major economic change (Brexit) which we haven't recovered from yet. We've had years of low interest rates and economic stability and growth, and now we have instability. It's miserable and depressing but (having lived abroad) I know the grass isn't always greener.

Tekkentime · 20/11/2022 09:30

Nowhere is perfect and yes the cost of food is higher outside the UK. Moving abroad made me appreciate the UK a lot more, the scenery, the efficiency.

However, give it a go but plenty of expats who swear they couldn't bear the UK any longer go back.

There are mant brits who just can't stop whinging.

we have a bigger labour issue

Yes, we have pretty much the same number of people looking for jobs as there are vacancies. Unfortunately there must be a skills mismatch or a location mismatch.

roses2 · 20/11/2022 09:32

It is Brexit though. Food in the USA/Canada/New Zealand has always been expensive though in season and local produce is cheaper. Eg corn on the cob - $5 for 4 out of season - I’ve seen them for 15c each in season.

But in the UK the price of corn on the cob is the same all year round - it never fluctuated. We re in the shit because of both Brexit + covid + Russian war. It's not just one factor, they are all feeding each other into a black swan event (a serious of small events all combined together into a catastrophic event).

felded · 20/11/2022 09:35

@MarshaBradyo not everyone pays in Ireland, it depends on income.

felded · 20/11/2022 09:36

also not being able to access GPs is putting a strain on hospitals.

Halloweenbiscuits · 20/11/2022 09:38

Bye then

felded · 20/11/2022 09:38

No investment in skills & the gov have been taken by surprise by the 500k of over 50s who have left the labour market.

@username8888

years of growth? We never recovered from 08 and it was masked by cheap credit.

I don't think anyone is arguing it isn't a combination of factors but it is annoying when Brexit supporters refuse or cannot see what an act of self harm Brexit is.

Why is the UK, who produce around 67% of its own energy requirements and imports very little from Russia, paying among the most expensive electricity and gas prices in Europe?

Why do we have one of the highest inflation rates going? and 7.1m waiting for NHS treatment?

My nephew yesterday fell of his bicycle in Denia, Spain, minutes for an Ambulance, no wait in AE, stitched up, x rayed, GF showed his Ghic and paid a small fee.

I don't want to move, i want the UK to start putting its house in order and govern for all of us, not just the wealthy.

I don't understand this point? I think it's scary that so many are leaving the NHS but understand it when you see the salaries in Australia for example.
