Lazy day here. DC at school, I’ve had my flu jab and went to Tesco.

Keeping an eye on work emails as lots going on. Feel a bit guilty for not being in as
my boss is off sick but I did ask if they needed me and they said no 🤷‍♀️

DD 5 has finally given in and started using toothpaste again after about 6 weeks of refusing 🤢😬 We tried everything bribes but nothing worked, even a shark shaped toothbrush.

Happy half term!

Happierwithouthim · 23/10/2020 12:59

I used lidl app yesterday and got brocolli, southern fried chicken mini fillets and pink lady apples using the coupons, all of which will be used in our house. Decided against the weetabix even though it was a good discount because I've got about 6 weetabix left and seeing as ds is only one who eats it and has had it once since going back to school a box of 36 was unnecessary.

They had metre stick of swizzels sweets for €2.94, had loads of sweets inside. Dd commented they'd be great for a birthday party. I got them one each as a Halloween treat.

We also got 3 choc filled doughnuts for€2 sinfully delicious!!

pumpkin he's fab, love seeing their faces with the bubble wrap!

em good luck with results of colposcopy. Are you not happy that masks are strongly recommended only or unhappy to wear them?

OP posts:
ememem84 · 23/10/2020 16:15

happier not happy wearing one. But I’m going to avoid as much as possible. Dh will do the food shop and I can order things online. I’m sad that our gov won’t close our borders despite most cases coming j to the island.

Wolfcub · 23/10/2020 18:01

Em fingers crossed for good results

Happier I need a trip to Lidl

Dusted whole house, vacuumed downstairs

Washing done and hung up

Took df to pick his van up

Exes office chair taken apart and brought downstairs. My new office chair taken upstairs and put together

Have had a mare of bad amazon deliveries today so lots of returns, one item mouldy, one the wrong thing and one in the wrong language

Still grumping at the other company re refund

Unescorted · 23/10/2020 18:48

Happier I live about 3 miles from the Swizzler Matlowe factory. On Thursday afternoon the whole town smells of Palma Violets. It is a happy moment.

em hope you are ok...

Wolf do your deliveries turn up just as it gets to the point in a 2 hour meeting where you need to participate? Or is that just mine?

I am kind of getting used to wearing a mask when I am out and about. All around is hunkering down into Tier 2 or 3 and it won't be long before the village barricades go up. Coronavirus is not only a workshy vampire it is a lazy sod that hates hills.

apumpkinaday · 23/10/2020 18:55

Hooray!! Last day done and now I’m off for a week. I’m so chuffed, it’s been the most difficult half term I’ve ever done since being a teacher and I am very looking forward for a week off. We have had spag bol for tea (see pic of spaghetti dog), went to the woods and are now watching a film. DS is very grouchy, I think he’s overtired but I’m going to try and keep him awake until his bedtime and then hopefully he will sleep through!. I’m feeling a lot better about isolating in the autumn than I did in the spring, the colder weather makes me want to be at home anyway!.

em your chicken pie sounds amazing!. Hope you had some hot choc today.

Thanks wolf! I hope you manage to get your refund that sounds very frustrating!.

Thank you mrs, very happy to be off now and enjoying half term. Very annoying about DFS, hopefully it’s delivered in time for Christmas and then she can get cracking on her decorations!.

Thanks unescorted! He is adorable but he can be a little terror when he wants to be!. Glad to hear your DD called you, I hope she’s doing well!.

life sorry about the stressful week but congrats to your DH🥳

I love Lidl snuggly, it’s a tradition that when we go we all get a 45p pain au chocolat and eat it in the car after we’ve finished shopping!.

em Good luck with your results!

Great news about DD using toothpaste again love, I have similar problems with DD who just hates to brush her teeth, mornings and bedtimes are a nightmare here!.

Aw thanks happier, it’s so cute when they discover new things isn’t it!

NSD again, the joys of isolating!

apumpkinaday · 23/10/2020 18:56

Spaghetti dog

SnugglySnerd · 23/10/2020 20:40

Happy half term Pumpkin! I have been ready for it for about 3 weeks! It has been slightly ruined by finding out that the bastard clocks go back on Sunday so that means all the dcs will be up by 5 (possibly earlier) and will then be all out of synch and grumpy for a few days. I am trying to think how to tire them out tomorrow!!

ememem84 · 23/10/2020 21:06

unescorted I’m ok. It’s been a hella day.

Ds ran out infront of a car in the garden centre car park. Dd refused naps all day. Ds locked me in the garage - I had to climb out of the window as he’d slid the bolt shut and I’d parked the car too close to garage door to get out that way. Dd kicked me in the face - v painful as my sinuses are up and the afore mentioned colposcopy.

Sigh.

I’m not overly concerned about the results if I’m honest. The dr said she’d removed all of the but which looked like it was causing the wonky results. So fingers crossed.

I have wine. We had leftover pie for dinner. Yum. Both dc ate it all up. I’m watching bake-off.

SnugglySnerd · 23/10/2020 22:08

Oh dear Em, that is not a good day. How did he shut you in the garage?

Bornlazy · 23/10/2020 23:12

em that sounds like the day from hell Sad I've been wearing a mask for ... god knows how long actually and you do get used to them. I remember very clearly being really opposed to them but it quickly becomes part of your life.

Life well done to your dh

Pumpkin lovely picture of your ds

I am loving Lidl right now. My top tip is if you know you are going well over your £100 or £200 target then split your shopping so you can use your voucher there and then and dont need to rush back or lose it.

Accidentalaccountant · 24/10/2020 07:12

Just caught up. Girlie so sorry 're your dad. Em you do get used to a mask. Been decorating so spendy but all done now. Next job clearing allotment. That won't cost anything😁

lifelongfrugaleer · 24/10/2020 07:40

Catching up on ewfl now.
Oh dear em. Today will be better

DD covid bubble has burst. FFS happy half term!

ememem84 · 24/10/2020 08:13

snuggly he shut the door and bolted it (bolt is at handle height) and he can reach... then he wouldn’t let me out. Little bugger. If I’d not parked the car so close to the big door it’d have been easy to get out. Instead I had to climb out of the window.

Wolfcub · 24/10/2020 08:31

Morning all

Em that sounds a mare of a day. Ds has locked me out of the house on a number of occasions, most when he was small, not fun

Life bugger does that crimp your half term plans a lot or were you planning home-based chill time

Dropping the ratty teenager at his dads this morning for some much needed peace and quiet. Pilates, Beer and rugby are in today's plan

lifelongfrugaleer · 24/10/2020 12:03

Only one activity it really affects so that's not too bad.
£51 Sainsbury's yesterday.

£15 skate park lesson today. £6 tea for DD to cheer her up

Taytocrisps · 24/10/2020 12:17

Morning everyone.

I'm on holidays - yaay! Said I'd take the mid-term break off, so I can spend time with DD. I didn't anticipate another lockdown which means we can't go anywhere or do anything much. Oh, well. Nice not to think about work for a few days. I can chill. I've a few things to do next week like:

  • ring my solicitor who has mislaid a document (fingers crossed it's turned up)
  • check if the vet is still open for DCat1's dental op on the 3rd
  • check my bank account to see if Bershka refunded me for an order I placed around April which never arrived
  • get DD a new school coat 'cos her current one has a hole under the armpit
  • catch up on phone calls to some friends
  • have a think about Christmas and order some presents

I'm sure there's loads more things like that to add to my list.

I think I mentioned last Sunday that I was going for a long beach walk. I did my walk but I wore my walking boots and the back of one of them rubbed my ankle raw. I have them years and that's never happened before - maybe I need thicker socks? So I can't go on any walks until my ankle heals.

I signed up for a few online conversations with writers as part of International Literature Festival Dublin 2020. There was one yesterday with Roddy Doyle (haven't watched it yet) and one today with Sinéad Burke.

I'm currently lazing in bed with a cuppa. I did get up and feed the cats though. DCat 2 is currently sitting on my bed playing with a bell that's dangling from an old reindeer jacket DD had when she was little. I've to bring it to the charity shop.

It was a stormy night last night. As soon as I'm dressed, I need to pick up one of my plant pots which blew over.

We're making our wreaths this week. I'm still waiting on some pumpkin bits which are en route from China. They reached Amsterdam on Thursday. If they don't arrive, we'll just go ahead anyway.

Onto your news.

Girlie I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad Flowers. You've so much going on with DD - this is the last thing you needed. Is he still in hospital? Is the hospital near you? Although you probably can't visit him anyway. I hope all goes well with the surgery and he makes a good recovery.

pumpkin I googled the Strictly pyjamas but they seem to be out of stock now. I was thinking of getting some for DD. I can't really help with your primary school dilemma. There's only one primary school in my town and it was right next door to the creche DD attended at the time, so the creche staff dropped the kids to school and collected them after school. For obvious reasons, DD's little friends from creche all attended that school too. So it was a very easy decision to make. Very cute pic of DS and hilarious one of spaghetti dog Grin

em your chicken pie sounds fab. Would you mind sharing the recipe? Hope DS wasn't too traumatized by the nasal spray. Fingers crossed for good news from your medical tests. DD locked me out the back garden once. I was hanging out clothes and she spotted the back door was open and closed and locked the door. I had to climb over the side gate. We've been wearing masks for months here - since June or July maybe? They're mandatory on public transport and in shops etc. We have to wear them in work too but only in the communal areas (corridors etc.) - we don't have to wear them at our desks, thankfully. DD has to wear one all day at school. I hate them and will be so glad to ditch them whenever we get the green light to do so, but it has to be done.

north sorry to hear about your friend's mum. You're right about the toll this is taking on mental health. There was a very sad and shocking story here during the week www.rte.ie/news/2020/1022/1173240-bodies-dublin/. I guess we don't know if Covid/restrictions played a part or if the mother was suffering from PND and it would have happened anyway. Very sad though.

life congrats. to your DH for passing his exam. Sorry to hear about house move and work stress. Fingers crossed re: Covid. I'm assuming one of her classmates tested positive?

Love glad your DD is more receptive to toothbrushing now.

Wolf enjoy your day. Well deserved.

ememem84 · 24/10/2020 13:47

tayto my made up pie recipe:

Pack of chicken thighs
Onion
Garlic (4 cloves maybe...)
Mushrooms sliced
Butternut squash
Peas
Sweetcorn

Chopped chicken up bite size browned in a pan with onions and garlic. Added a smidge of chicken stock. Threw in mushrooms and a glug of white wine (drank the rest). Cooked until cooked.

Then made white sauce - butter flour milk. Bit of oregano. Threw it all in pie dish.

Rolled out pre rolled puffy pastry. Threw it on top. Banged in oven for 35mins ish. Ate with carrots and brocoli. And more wine.

£35 riding today.

£36 filling up car with petrol. Almost made the mistake of putting diesel in. But caught myself before I did it! That would have been Spendy!

Taytocrisps · 24/10/2020 14:54

Thanks for the recipe em. I love butterenut squash but never know what to do wtith it. Do you make your own pastry or would shop bought pastry do the job? Eek - close call with the diesel!

SnugglySnerd · 24/10/2020 15:06

Tayto butternut is really nice roasted and added to risotto with blue cheese. I also like it in soup as it has a really creamy texture without adding any actual cream.
Came home from shops to find dh and dcs had made brownies. Hooray!

Taytocrisps · 24/10/2020 15:20

Spends so far:--

€19.66 groceries
€7.95 butcher
€4.80 bakery (barm brack and a cookie for DD)

Still need to get potatoes.

Taytocrisps · 24/10/2020 15:21

Also, anyone got a recipe for soup? Nothing fancy - just a basic winter veg. soup.

ememem84 · 24/10/2020 15:37

tayto I’d love to say I’m the kind of woman who makes her own pastry. But I’m not. Shop bought pre rolled all the way!! Life is too short to make pastry!

Butternut squash/pumpkin is also lovely in rissotto.

Chop two huge white onions and almost caramelise with garlic. Add small cubes of butternut. Soften. Add rissotto rice. Add stock. Cook. Add grated nutmeg. When almost done stir in cream cheese. Finish with Parmesan. We’ve done this a few times. The poshest time I served it in mini pumpkins. And baked it in the oven. Yum

CamdenLurker · 24/10/2020 15:57

Hey everyone!

Hope you're all having a good weekend.

Dd1 would like to learn to crochet, she only needs the basics to get started but we're not sure what size hook to buy to start with, I think she's after trying a few Granny Squares first of all - can anyone point me in the right direction?

I've spent so much money this month, I can't even pinpoint where it's gone, tried to do a budget shop at Aldi last night, spent £45 plus £15 in Home Bargains.

Dh is in a DIY frenzy and currently boarding out the loft, I'm keeping well away Confused loads of housework to do but I just can't get motivated.

When I worked in the kitchen of a fancy restaurant we used to make a chicken pie filling by adding a glug of double cream to chicken gravy granules - sounds gross but was actually really tasty, we would also chuck in some leeks to make it a bit bougie Grin
