@Unescorted that’s an extremely kind thought, thank you. I think we will be ok, lots of people have contributed. We must make sure we keep on doing so of course as people could be in this situation for months.

I have been through my Brexit stash and put everything on a shelf that is just out of date or nearly so, to use up. I will divide further all that will expire in the next six months and the longer date stuff so we can see where we are. Puss has supervised.

ememem84 · 01/05/2020 18:08

unescorted that, or the golf clubs aren’t freezing memberships....

Unescorted · 01/05/2020 18:15

Duchess it is not kind - I could open a lido filled with soup, and still it comes.

Stock rotation is so important - I write the date on the top of everything so I (and the packers) can see it really easily. If things have only a month to go I have a box that the packers just cram as much in to the bags as they can. I rather it didn't go to waste - and I refuse to send out of date food to people who don't have a choice about if they eat it or not.

Unescorted · 01/05/2020 19:27

Ha em that could have something to do with .

ememem84 · 01/05/2020 19:59

So many new rules.

Over 65’s must stay home. (Except if they need to go out to work)

We as a household of 4 can meet up with no more than 2 people. So can see my parents. But. They must stay 2m away. And can’t see us anyway as are over 65.

If they wanted to come and see us. They can’t. Because they’re only allowed to see two additional people.

There is talk that as our nightingale hospital is only on loan the new rules are in place to make our virus numbers creep up so the new hospital isn’t a waste of 14million.....

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 01/05/2020 21:36

@Unescorted, what would you like to see come in to a food bank? I suppose it depends on what you already have. I’ve put in a bottle of squash, jellies to set and chocolate biscuits together with the more worthy stuff as I know quite a few folk have kids.

Unescorted · 02/05/2020 00:33

For us it depends on what the supermarkets have on sale - the following week we don't need them. At the moment we don.t need anything. Each food bank is different - some can't get enough of fish and beans, others love soup, others pasta or pulses, or vege in tins. It depends on the demographic using it.
Snack stuff for kids at the moment is universally popular, with many not getting free school meals. I always keep "short dated" chocolate & sweets in the short date box. People need joy in their life.

SnugglySnerd · 02/05/2020 08:13

My mum collects for the food bank at her church. They were asked to bear in mind that many people using the food bank also don't have he money for the gas or electric to cook so e.g. brown rice or pulses that take a long time to cook are not very useful. Things like noodles that you can just pour boiling kettle water onto are better.

Rainb0w · 02/05/2020 08:21

I always try and put treat stuff in the food bank everybody deserves a little treat and it upsets me when the attitude is that people shouldn't have luxuries if using the food bank which I've heard a few too many times.

Unescorted · 02/05/2020 08:37

Snuggly true - we have no cook, kettle only, 5 minute boxes. My heart sinks when I see wholewheat linguini or wild rice. The plastic sachets of noodles and rice are good (if crap for the environment). Also cous cous - especially the flavoured ones.

I am waiting for the weather to clear up so I can garden fettle - in the interim I am going to watch gardeners world.... I am so hitting lockdown bingo.

Wolfcub · 02/05/2020 09:09

Don't send your weather this way Unescorted I need to get some washing done.

Lovely gardener came yesterday with some plants so now I have bright and cheerful pots rather than miserable clumps of dead things (flood then not having watering can through the dry spell because of the flood)

It's been a really rough week. Super long work days plus an incredibly challenging child. Hopefully next week will be better

Made a rustic French loaf in my breadmaker yesterday. Very tasty, hopefully it cuts slightly better today than it did yesterday

Found a new footpath on my circular road walk that leads down onto another footpath I often use. Beautiful bluebells and very peaceful even though it runs right next to the motorway

Ds has baked a cake for stbexh, I did not poison it

Loads of ironing and cleaning yesterday. Have very nearly emptied stbexh's cupboard in the spare room now. I'm going to put my sewing machine in it today Grin

Congrats Life on the new job

Mrs lovely photo of mum and bob

Agree re food banks. I hate the attitude that you don't deserve something nice because you use a food bank. There but for the grace of god go a lot of judgey people

Em your new rules sound a bit confusing

I am still waiting for clearer weather - but it isn't raining.

I have to do some washing as well wolf. Not doing any during the week means we have a backlog, so I will do mine and the tea towels..... somebody who is not working or doing school work can do the rest.

Can I recommend - even (especially) if you don't have a garden to watch Monty Don potter around his garden. It is so peaceful, although I am wildly jealous of his soil.

rainbow the deserving poor arguments annoy me so much. They are so Victorian, you see it with benefit entitlement and housing allocations too. They only exist to make the person feel better about their own narrow ambition.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 02/05/2020 10:17

DP is going to shop this morning, will put some treats on the list to add to donation. Several colleagues do have kids.

Rainb0w · 02/05/2020 11:47

Completely agree.
In some people's mind if somebody is on benefits they should sit on crates no carpets and god forbid if they have a TV!? Flat screen dontyaknow!? If they see them in McDonald's or somewhere treating their children it's a travosity? Wrong!
steps off soapbox

LaneBoy · 02/05/2020 13:42

Totally agree rainbow

Wolfcub · 02/05/2020 13:52

Washing out - hope yours is too Unescorted, we've had some black clouds but no wet stuff

Cake made with an out of date packet mix from the brexit cupboard - bought on the assumption eggs would be hard to find. I have to say I've always kept a storecupboard but the brexit cupboard has been so useful I might think n about keeping slightly more in in the future.

Cupboard leaned out and sewing machine and sewing box moved in

Pilates done, walk done - went to see the bluebells from the other direction. Book to be read now but first need to lend an ear to a friend.

Had a quick trip down to town today as DH needed gluten free food that hasn’t been available in the local shop (DH does the supermarket type shops as I can’t get the bus back from those). Got some mixed sweets to do averages and probability with the Caglets :o and a very non essential footie goal (although that does count as essential for the sake of our shed which is being used as one currently Hmm although DD1 has got very good at chipping the ball through the window 😂

Managed to get a bit of clothing for Cagletini as well, who has outgrown some. Think she will need shoes soon though

SnugglySnerd · 02/05/2020 13:56

Yes totally agree Rainbow.

We have been baking today. 2 types of bread in oven. We used half the dough to make a small loaf and the other half to make pesto rolls. Dh is attempting an orange and cardamom cake in a bit.

I've just noticed all the dcs have gone in and I am sitting in the garden on my own which I bliss but I should probably go and see what they are up to!

lifelongfrugaleer · 02/05/2020 18:24

I agree everyone should have treats. Why should poverty equal any more drudge than it already does.

Nsd today. Made my own chippaties today. Will do that again. Chick pea curry as last minute tea.

Mil has sent me a list to stock her cupboards so will need a Sainsbury's trip this week.

LaneBoy · 02/05/2020 20:11

Aw man. We’ve had our first cancelled lockdown takeaway experience! Have now ordered kfc instead (which I’d wanted to anyway as I was very excited that ours is one of the opened ones!) and watching BGT feeling hungry :o

SnugglySnerd · 02/05/2020 22:18

Bad luck about your takeaway *Lane. I hope tou have got something to eat by now!

I made an aubergine curry, it was delicious! I wish there had been a bit more though, I am still peckish and contemplating a snack.

lifelongfrugaleer · 03/05/2020 08:05

Did the KFC arrive?
I haven't got a lock down takeaway yet.
Nsd planned today

LaneBoy · 03/05/2020 08:39

It did life and surprisingly quickly (earlier on the estimate had been 70-90mins!). No gravy though. Boo.

ememem84 · 03/05/2020 08:49

£32 riding yesterday
£44 takeaway - Chinese - half duck and pancakes, shredded chilli beef Kung po chicken shrimp fried rice chicken chow mein prawn crackers. Yum. Ds loved it.

Dd has a mega sleep. She had her dinner at around 5 then was unbelievably grouchy and tired. So I put her down for a short pre bedtime nap. She slept through until 7 this morning. And because she was just meant to have a nap I didn’t bother putting her in her jammies. So she stayed in her clothes all night. Oopsy.

Ds woke up at 5. Dh brought him into our bed. Ds then woke me up at 630 by jumping on my head. Not the peaceful morning I’d wanted....

northender · 03/05/2020 08:58

Morning all.
Those rules do sound odd Em hope dd is fully recovered now.
wolf am envious of your bluebell walks. I grew up very much out in the sticks, by a river and surrounded on all sides by bluebell woods. I think dh and I are going to go for a walk tomorrow to find some bluebells.
lane glad your takeaway arrived. We've been getting a delivery pretty much every other weekend, from local independents that we would visit on a night out in normal circumstances, as a treat for us and to support them too. We are lucky to have salaries and safe jobs, I appreciate that lots of people can't afford that luxury at the moment.
Mrs lovely pic of your mum & Bob. I'm not a B&B pudding fan but yours looked good.
snuggly when you say pesto rolls, do you mean spiral, Chelsea bun type rolls? JO did something like that in one of his first lockdown programmes & it looked good.

I had my usual grocery shopping Saturday morning yesterday. I think it was life who mentioned your mums love of food brands? My mum is similar, but has been very good about me just getting what I can. It was definitely a list of the older generation though yesterday with lard, dripping and suet! She doesn't use masses of them but I think they had all needed replacing at the same time.
I did sewing & cleaning/tidying/sorting in the afternoon & we did our weekly zoom quiz with friends at night.
Today will be more of the same I think.
