Why would anyone be offended by muslin squares? I think they are a standard purchase aren't they, nice ones would be a fab gift! Especially if you end up with a sicky baby you can't have enough of them really :)

Another one with uniform to buy. You can order the logo stuff from Tesco much cheaper than uniform shops. They are going to continue it after Tesco Direct closes.

We are overdrawn despite our best efforts not to be and I just had to put fuel in the car. Pay day tomorrow thank goodness.

Wolfcub · 27/06/2018 21:28

I think muslins are a great present. The most thoughtful and appreciated present I received was a pack of prem nappies and some baby wipes because someone actually thought about what we needed in the circumstances

SunnyLikeThursday · 27/06/2018 21:54

My dh tried to explain music theory to me tonight. I don't know what it is about music theory, but it really seems to bring out the worst kind of incomprehensible bullshit in people. Either that or I am seriously deficient in the upper storey.

SnugglySnerd · 27/06/2018 22:39

Agree muslin squares are a great gift. We have loads!

ChristmasSeacow · 27/06/2018 23:58

Yep, I’ve given muslins (coloured/patterned ones since it was a gift) and I think they were well received. I’d have been very happy to get those myself.

Gosh, branded uniform really does add up, doesn’t it? I kitted DS out in Tu trousers /polo shirts /shorts for about £30 (in 25% off) and only bought two branded jumpers, about £8 each. There were other branded things I could have got (polo shirts, a school reversible fleece, rucksack) but they weren’t compulsory and anyway I thought DS would never find his coat if it was the same as everyone else’s! Plain jumpers from a supermarket would have been acceptable. Thinking about it I probably spent more on school shoes - as I had to replace them at Easter - than the rest of the stuff put together. Secondary costs sound painful.

Just got back from a night at the cinema with some of the school mums. We are going to make a regular thing of it, hopefully monthly. £15 for a ticket and drink, I took sharing bags of chocolate from the supermarket to share and someone else brought skittles and popcorn so now my teeth feel very itchy! Ocean’s 8, very enjoyable. The school has a really nice bunch of mums, not cliquey. it makes such a difference.

Oh then what could change about your earnings now so? Wreck

Nothing. I think last tax year there was a period where I was paying a lot in childcare before ds started school. I'm not sure why they are being so stupid. I could phone them I suppose Grin

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 28/06/2018 06:37

I've not been able to work out how to order the labelled stuff from tesco snuggly I'm going to have another look again!!

Awake early, combination of heat and magpies making a racket!!

ememem84 · 28/06/2018 06:53

Man school uniforms expensive!!!! Not for us for a few years yet thank goodness!! Dh is adamant ds will go to his old school (private fee paying one). I didn’t go private so am not bothered either way.

All schools here are good (even the “rubbish” ones are better than some good ones in the uk!!) but we’ve conpromised and said ds will most likely go private for secondary school. But primary will depend on where we live. If we live in “town” I don’t really thing I want him going to a local primary (massive class sizes etc). So it’ll be private primary.

He has a place if we want it as dh went there. We just have to tell them.

SnugglySnerd · 28/06/2018 07:01

Girlie I can't remember how I did it! I think I searched for it on the main website.

Our mortgage deal runs out soon. We're thinking of getting another 2 year fixed but extending the term to reduce the monthly payments so we have a bit of breathing space. By the time it ends our childcare will be much less so we can start paying off more. Is that sensible or stupid??

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/06/2018 07:32

In the circumstances snuggly because you will actually overpay. If you overpay enough you might still pay it off in time for their uni fees.

lifelongfrugaleer · 28/06/2018 07:37

Sensible snuggly, as long as you do reroute child care money

SnugglySnerd · 28/06/2018 08:08

Yes we'd definitely reroute as much of it as possible whilst probably putting a bit aside for a holiday each year too. I think we'll do it.
Just had a brainwave on way to work - we have a lot of Nectar points that would pay for much of the school uniform especially if we buy when it's 25% off. Can definitely get polo shirts and skirts/trousers plus tights from there.

Wolfcub · 28/06/2018 08:15

Thanks for the Tesco’s link. Unfortunately they don’t do our uniform - it’s not just that they don’t do our brand but shirt styles are very specific by gender as are blazers right down to style of collar and where pockets are placed. I don’t live in a well off area so I’m honestly shocked that they’ve gone down the route of requiring shirts at nearly £8 per shirt. I think I bought half of all of ds’s school shirts for primary for £8 last year.
The heat is giving me odd dreams, very disturbing mostly work associated but in very bizarre ways
Have a lovely frugal day everyone, payday at midnight Grin

mammynowanauntyIRL · 28/06/2018 09:03

Normally I've schoolbooks purchased by now and a start made on uniform but I'm just not bothered this year. And have two to buy for now as well. I'm holding off on uniform a bit because want to see if H will having during the week or only weekend access because I'll buy two sets of everything if he does and he can be responsible for a set at his house then. Got a text from school that their tracksuit tops, branded, aren't available until October so until then any top will do, so ds will wear dd old one and dd will wear normal clothes, it's not saving really just pushing the expense out a bit.

wolf that's an expensive uniform considering it's not a well off area. We're lucky can buy all except the jumpers in Aldi/Tesco/Littlewoods/Dunnes etc. I'm intrigued to see if ds will be hard on school clothes, he's generally not.

SunnyLikeThursday · 28/06/2018 09:25

We have to get Tesco embroidered uniform but I find the price okay. I think the private schools around here have much more expensive uniform and I'm glad we don't have that. Ds's uniform is smart and comfortable and I think that's all that's needed.

I always have to buy five sets to make sure we can have one clean at any given time, but he doesn't seem to grow much now, which is good.

Cagliostro · 28/06/2018 09:53

Morning all. Definitely not an NSD today as I have to get cash out for the carpet cleaner! Woohoo! I’m so excited as once they are done we can start MOVING STUFF IN.

Also going for ice cream for a friend’s birthday, and then it’s a charity event at St. John Ambulance tonight. Very proud - they all had to choose and write about a charity, and DD’s was selected so her chosen one (local autism support) will get half the takings :)

WreckTangled · 28/06/2018 11:18

We can't get ours embroidered in Tesco. The school are happy for you to have non embroidered for everything but pe tops but I buy the embroidered jumpers and cardigans.

SunnyLikeThursday · 28/06/2018 12:56

My ds always feels like the bees knees in his embroidered t-shirts and jumpers. The uniform was definitely one of the major perks of the job for him when he started, which was nice.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/06/2018 14:33

Wolf www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/deals-hunter/2014/08/halve-the-price-of-your-embroidered-school-uniform/ is this any good to you?.

NSD.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/06/2018 14:40

Sorry Wolf, ignore me.

ChristmasSeacow · 28/06/2018 17:12

I am going to get embroidered shirts for summer next year as I’ve just realised they do them in the same dark colour as the jumper, as well as in white. They look smart but also VERY IMPORTANTLY won’t show the sun cream stains! The white ones were ruined within a fortnight of sunny weather starting and were looking pretty ratty with a whole term to go.

Em the cost of uniform will pale into insignificance alongside private school fees Grin

Was an NSD - had a lovely new Mum friend and baby round this morning - but I’ve just spent £89 inthe Joules sale. Some bits for dd for next year but a dress and two of the same tops (different sizes) for me so at least one will be going back. Oops.

QuiteCleanBandit · 28/06/2018 17:12

£20 waitrose voucher arrived this morning .
Spent on nice lunch things as visitors today.
Hurrah -£11 ish over paid with cash from my purse. .
Hmm always tricky as one doesnt want to look unhospitable but it always hits the budget a bit, particularly as there is never a reciprocated lunch in returnHmm
Might do pasta/ pesto next time and see what happens😂
