Right, thank you for the welcome.

In the past year DH lost his job and we have relocated across country (we are aus based). Our income has more than halved but I'm finding it very hard to mentally cope with the drop. DH is a planner (where will the money go next) but I wish we had a cushion or buffer beneath us. We do YNAB but I'm struggling to keep it up dated. I also keep bloody spending anything we save.

Big trip to the UK this month for 6 weeks. I'm desperately trying to get off the spending treadmill but don't know where to start. The obvious answer is "stop spending money" but I almost feel like I don't know how. Which is stupid and pathetic... and so the treadmill continues. Confused

Well I have submitted my tax return. That was a frugal win as it turns out they owe me money! If anyone has had tax deducted at source and they are below the tax threshold make sure you reclaim it.

I have also renewed my tax credits, including telling them that my DS is staying on for sixth form.

It is a relief to get it all done.

Regarding spending today, about £10 in Sainsbury's.

Digger, sympathies, I think it is about developing new habits, I think it is worth getting to grips with YNAB then there is no opportunity to delude yourself over your spending and your situation. I've had to make a lot of changes since my separation.

SpottyTeacakes · 01/07/2015 16:56

Nsd. Both dc are being awful which I'm putting down to the weather. 31 degrees here. Our house is just as hot.

Peppapissinpig · 01/07/2015 17:39

Hi Digger, agree with what Pav said. Have another go with YNAB; I've found that by completing it properly I have lost the inclination to randomly spend (well most of the time Wink)

babsmam · 01/07/2015 18:11

Hi digger. No real advice but would echo writing down everything for a month, and I mean everything. Then see where it goes. We will help you too.
£10 I'm morrisons and got the same in vouchers back partly due to my complaint about the grapes last week.
£4 on football

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/07/2015 18:45

What are your spending triggers Digger? boredom etc.

If it's online you could delete the apps/accounts etc and ban yourself one day at a time.

If it's shops you could leave your cards at a home and take enough cash for what you need eg petrol etc.

£9.80 fish and chips.

I was just thinking it was an NSD then remembered that DH did the weekly shop as he had the day off work. I would have enjoyed the lovely air-conditioned supermarket today!
As if it were not hot enough the cat has just come and sat on me.
Collie have you signed up for the loyalty card at Pets at Home? They send us loads of cat-specific vouchers every month.

£21 in Tesco, being lunch, dinner and tomorrow's lunch, plus extra salad as we are running out. Also some fruit, yoghurts, crisps. May be some offers on click save if not expired.

£46 to get a broken freezer taken away by the council but I'll get that back as it isn't our freezer but domestic collections are cheaper

AuditAngel · 01/07/2015 19:15

Welcome Digger

Adora hope things ok?

Peppapissinpig · 01/07/2015 19:35

£63 on petrol. Think I got to the garage on fumes!

Passthecake30 · 01/07/2015 20:48

£1.20 on a jacket spud. That is all Smile

welcome digger

AuditAngel · 01/07/2015 21:24

I have just taken myself in hand. Our Ovo fixed rate deal finished 2 weeks ago. I was paying £273 per month dual fuel (horrendous I know), but we have 3 fridges and 2 freezers, also DH wants to walk around the house in shorts and t-shirt all year round, also use air con in the summer.

Just did a switch to Sainsburys and should save £200 per year. Plus £30 cash back, plus 1560 nectar points. Used MSE energy club.

AdoraBell · 01/07/2015 21:27

Haven't had any news from DH today, but I have been out most of the day. Our power went this morning too so I popped into town after Pilates.

So, £33 for two week's of Pilates
£4.50 ish on top up shop
£1.80 on roads and a bit off DH's prepaid car park card.

Tomorrow should be an NSD and then DH should be back on Friday. We had planned early birthday parties for DDs with their friends for Saturday but DH is going to be exhausted so I don't know how I'm going to handle it.

Thanks for the tips re cheaper shopping Fluffy

girliefriend · 01/07/2015 21:33

Hi all, welcome newbies Smile

Lsd today, was naughty and bought a bottle of 7 up and bag of strawberry bon bons - for no real reason other than I was at work and thought I deserved a treat Hmm that came £2.40.

Car goes in for its mot and service tomos - eek! Hoping the money I have saved is enough to cover it!!

Digger I find asking myself if I really need whatever it is that I am about to spend money on, wanting it is not enough on its own!! (Other than pop and strawberry bon bons of course Wink )

ipsos definitely give aldi a go.
it rained here yesterday from 11am until we went to Bed. Warm but no Sun Sad

diggerdigsdogs · 02/07/2015 10:27

Thank you all for the welcome and the advice :)

ipsos sorry Blush what do you mean by shopping for savings products? Like cash back websites?

pav and peppa I think this is why I let myself not record it until the end of the month or longer but by that time the damage is done. I need to record it daily to keep on track. Yes I do delude myself that it's ok to spend.

fluffy bordom is definitely my biggest trigger. 3dc under 5 (one 3 months today), recently moved to a new state so no friends.

DD1 broke my iPhone and I replaced it with a $49 phone that gets email but is impossibly slow. So I have no desire to shop on it. It's definitely the habit and ease of online shopping. I think I need to close my paypal account or change the password to one I don't know.

Not a LSD here as I had to get DD3s passport which was a fortune.

SpottyTeacakes · 02/07/2015 12:32

£7 something at soft play.

SpottyTeacakes · 02/07/2015 12:52

June. Over budget by £228.85. Shit. I've moved £209 from savings.
