In 2021 Fauci said - 'Only very very rarely would vaccinated people get infected...

...and if they did, they wouldn't get sick, and they wouldn't even know they had it'

America calls this man "The Science" and every word he uttered back then and now, people take as absolute fact and truth.

On basis of his statement above, unvaccinated people were torn apart, shamed, demonised etc

Why wasn't all that shit he said classed as misinformation considering it wasn't true? Why won't he ever get de-platformed, or censored.

Why would a man of his expertise say things that aren't accurate? If he can openly spread false information such as the above, what else has he misled the world about since 2021 until now that heavily impacted peoples lives?

I think he deserves everyone an explanation (that was what we knew at the time bullsh*t) and an apology. Any one else agree?

the vaccination had brought covid under control, hadn't it

Casilero · 25/03/2023 18:34

He wasn't the only one who said that either was he?

Jonei · 25/03/2023 18:36

I agree op.

Random789 · 25/03/2023 18:45

Was he speaking sincerely, on the basis of his best understanding of a rapidly changing situation and a novel vaccine? My best guess is, yes he was.
It was obvious to everyone that experts were moving with lightening speed , and that they were constantly adapting their comments to new evidence, new understandings. And that, despite their sincere commitment to the truth and the public interest, they were likely to get things wrong sometimes.
I don't think you need to apologise for that.

noblegiraffe · 25/03/2023 18:52

I’m British so I’m not sure why I should care?

Blanketenvy · 25/03/2023 18:53

Well it's true that people that are vaccinated are much less likely to get seriously ill and die. Yes you are likely to still get symptoms and become unwell but many less hospitalisations and deaths.

Skiphopbump · 25/03/2023 18:56

Maybe that’s what the science pointed towards at the time so that’s what was genuinely believed.

Quite - in trials, the SARS-COV-2 vaccines demonstrated almost 100% efficacy at preventing infection.

In some sub studies, 100% efficacy was observed.

Paraphrasing something someone said back in 2021, without presenting the relevant context in misleading.

It's also worth bearing in mind Dr Fauci has been the target of vaccine disinformation groups for some time. This includes real risk of harm to both him and his family. Threads like these targeting specific individuals are really quite inflammatory.

I'm not sure that's actually true anymore amongst the younger population.

@rockly your stats are highly inaccurate now though, “the science has changed”.

There is nothing inflammatory about quoting verbatim what he actually said. He was saying this in response to a person questioning transmission and the context is clear, it’s not my interpretation.
His words at the time were hailed as the gold standard for C19 information and science. People hung onto his every word and those words paved the way for worldwide public and media hatred of the unvaccinated. His words were unjustifiably inflammatory for that group of people.

Of course I was expecting the old “the science changed and evolved” responses. Sure, that happens with science right. So why were people forced out of their jobs, based on these “facts”, why was movement restricted based on these “facts”, peoples lives were turned upside down, friendships and families were torn apart on the premise that transmission was reduced after vaccination. Surely we should have waited a little longer before vilifying those who were sceptical, if science evolves so quickly no? Or surely they should have actively tested transmission with clinical results to back up these “facts” from Fauci and crew?

I think he and all the other thousands of health professionals and government officials who regurgitated this should at least address it. Certainly apologies should come from media correspondents and personalities who wished ill upon those who remained unvaccinated.

@statementstate

Can you provide the evidence available at that time which shows he was wrong?

Why are you putting something in quotation marks I never said?

As I said in my post, nearly 100% efficacy was observed in trials and early population level data was vey promising also.

This is the context in which you're paraphrasing something Dr Fauci said.

Surely you can appreciate something can be true in 2021, based on on the best available evidence, yet not true in 2022 when the situation has changed.

noblegiraffe · 25/03/2023 19:43

I’m British so I’m not sure why I should care?

That. Even though I'm only naturalised British !! Who the F cares what Fauci believed in 2021.

In other news, Boris Johnson believed the assurances of his "advisors" that it was ok for his staff to hold a party. Which one of these events matters more now and into the future?

rockly · 25/03/2023 19:48

Or surely they should have actively tested transmission with clinical results to back up these “facts” from Fauci and crew?

I'm not sure what specifically you're asking here @statementstate

There is a difference between transmission and onward transmission.

Someone cannot transmit if they are not infected, hence the statements back in 2021 when almost 100% efficacy at preventing infection was observed in trials.

It is impossible to test onward transmission if no-one is infected, which is why this was not tested in trials.

In early population data, reductions in both transmission and onward transmission looked promising.

I am a scientist who was against mandates for the general population and pretty vocal about it, but this kind of targeting of specific individuals and making nonsense claims helps no-one.

I feel sorry for people who believe like you that they ever had our best interests at heart. It really astounds me.

lljkk · 25/03/2023 19:53

fwiw, I opposed vaccine mandates in all settings. But OP is talking to wrong crew, given Fauci is unknown to most Britains. Did Fauci actually say he supported vaccine mandates for federal employees & their subcontractors?

I had to take the vaccine or lose my job. I didn't want it but I had it. I decided that I wouldn't take it again and would look for another job if it was still mandatory. Work backed down on it. Retrospectively, I should have just looked for another job in the first place. I'm still fucked off about being forced into that position.

Beautiful3 · 25/03/2023 19:55

I agree. I've never had the vaccinations, and never been aware of having it. My vaccinated friends have had it at least twice!
