AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

Trish needs to predict doom and gloom (wrongly) at every large event that is planned and every variant that is discovered, otherwise she would no longer have an excuse for lining her face mask with sanitary pads.

What?!?! Though saying that some of the suggestions on this thread have been quite barmy. Why would someone think of that idea..and voice it 😆

Councillor Oliver Patrick now calling for schools to move to zoom learning in light of the new variant

And because no variant, not even the Kraken #XBB15, can evolve to beat an air filter. Or a well-fitting respirator. No variant can spread via Zoom. There are many things we can do to stop Covid causing more death and disability. We should be doing more of them. Happy 2023!

No variant can spread via Zoom.

Can someone please start a convincing-sounding rumor that that the latest variant has indeed evolved a method of spreading via electronic internet pixels, so that the Zero Covid bores will stop posting on threads like this and will go off and read a nice soothing book instead?

A Lib Dem? Why am I not in the least surprised. How many Lib Dem MPs are there, 11 isn't it? Hardly a ringing endorsement for their views.

Jourdain11 · 02/01/2023 00:52

Literally nowhere in that thread does he say schools should go online.

sst1234 · 02/01/2023 01:19

Sounds about the right level of intellect for @LondonCat7 to be following.

Absolutely- ironically the anti lockdown era make lockdowns more likely by opposing the common sense protective measures that reduce the likelihood of lockdowns.

Testing, isolation, social distancing, ventilation, masks, rule of 6, hospitality curfew are all light touch measures that would reduce infections and protect the NHS.

You are very much in the minority, public has no appetite for this and there would be riots if they tried to put further restrictions or lockdown. Short of getting the army out and shooting people the government haven't got enough police to arrest those who would oppose.

MeetPi · 02/01/2023 04:14

@ancientgran

The thing I find confusing is the people who are most vociferous about no lockdowns also seem to be the people who object to simple measures that would stop covid/flu/anything else spread.

This is absolutely the case. I suspect a good few of them were/are from bot farms.

MeetPi · 02/01/2023 04:19

@Cuppasoupmonster

It was to protect the tories’ voting base. They were hardly going to prioritise the young and working were they?

You really have an issue with the elderly, Cuppa, don't you? I saw a post on this thread of yours earlier suggesting that no Covid patients over 70 should expect treatment (I'm paraphrasing). Do you need some therapy, perhaps?

Never said that, nor do I believe it. No therapy needed - very close with all my grandparents until they passed away (one still alive and still very close).

MeetPi · 02/01/2023 05:25

@Cuppasoupmonster

I found one of your posts from earlier. I just really seems to imply little to no treatment. (Your post in bold.)

Scooopsahoy
.@ILoveeCakes i agree. My mum died last year at the age of 70, of cancer. Of course it was sad but I rationally knew that seventy was old (though not ancient) and the fact that the average age of death is 80 something does not mean that 80+ is a target or something everyone is entitled to. That’s not how averages work after all.

I think part of the issue is that for people we’ve known all our lives, and that we love, it can be hard to see them and their health objectively. So someone might view their 75 year old parent as not elderly, as healthy, living a full life etc. But the harsh reality is that for the average 75 year old a cancer diagnosis, a bout of pneumonia, or whatever, may well prove fatal. And we have to accept that.

I agree 100%. Of course it’s sad for those who love them, but past a certain point you’ve had your bite of the apple at life and are not entitled to society doing anything and everything to keep you alive, at any cost.

This is silly though. I suspect people are overly anxious or making stuff up on this thread. It’s so out of kilter to rl.

What are the people around you like? Socialising normally, living life without thought to Covid or are they worried as you are?

BadShepherd · 02/01/2023 07:44

Yeh sounds legit. The self-professed “critical thinkers” (want more lockdowns/private restaurants) - can’t handle differing opinions so assume conflicting thoughts must be bots/paid.

Logic fail, non? Is this really where we’re at now? That should you come across an opinion differing from your own you actually yell yourself it’s “not real”?

Southeastdweller · 02/01/2023 08:08

I think asking us to look after complete strangers is too much. It's time to move on.

JanusTheFirst · 02/01/2023 08:15

Thanks to those who have sympathised on our loss. She has left a huge gap in the lives of those who loved her.

Apologise to the few who criticised me for not responding enough but some understanding of our loss may explain that. We spent time yesterday remembering many funny and happy times as well as crying for our loss.

Nowhere have I said there should be another lockdown, although some imply I have. I ask for simple measures and some care and compassion for others.

I see that's too much to ask for from some but the anger and aggression aimed at others in this thread from some is depressing and totally unnecessary.

I responded to the thought that "the people who are most vociferous about no lockdowns also seem to be the people who object to simple measures that would stop covid/flu/anything else spread" - and from the beginning of the pandemic, I have also noticed this. It's likely ideological rather than scientific difference that explains this. However, it isn't a stretch at all to think bots in some form were attempting to influence opinion here. There were doing so on plenty of other social platforms - why not here? You're naive if you think they didn't.

Also, I don't want lockdowns or private restaurants (??) in any form. Thanks for the thought though.

@MarshaBradyo - where I live, people are somewhat in the middle. We're having a Covid wave at the moment (in summer) so most are being quite cautious. So, yes, we live life, but still have to think of Covid. I currently have Covid myself.

If you wake at 6am then it's perfectly possible. Are you implying that I'm a troll?

Or just wanting to add to my unhappiness.

I'm sorry for your loss and feel I should give you support as this thread has been hijacked.

I haven't read all this thread because after the first few pages agree with @MeetPi that it is full of bots. There is cleary a targeted agenda across much of social media, to minimise any discussion on covid danger. To be clear I don't want restrictions and most certainly not lockdowns.

This may have already been corrected somewhere in the thread but in case it hasn't, flu is not more dangerous than covid. Both are a problem at the moment. However covid is a much bigger problem see the numbers in today's bbc report on the crisis in A and E. To dismiss covid is foolish.

Buzzinwithbez · 02/01/2023 09:08

I'm really sorry. 73 is no age and must be an awful shock.
I know you said she didn't go far, but I hope that was because she liked a quiet life and was content rather than out of feeling she needed to limit her activities.

BadShepherd · 02/01/2023 09:09

If we’re all bots, don’t you feel a little foolish talking to a computer? 🤷‍♀️

People are a bit foolish with this ‘bot’ stuff tbh

Just post what you want and make a point if you can without it. There’s no point thinking everyone is fake because you are in the minority.
