AIBU to be sick of people who think it's all back to normal?

Woke to the news that my cousin died early this morning of Covid. No underlying conditions and she was vaccinated. But she was elderly. She hardly ever went out but must have picked it up on a rare outing to the local shop.

People are still dying and we should still be looking out for those vulnerable to this awful disease. It isn't all back to normal. My cousin is dead and she wouldn't be but for Covid.

Most people don’t care about the wider community unfortunately. Every Covid thread there’s people saying we need to ‘crack on’ and act as though Covid doesn’t exist.
As for people saying you need to catch Covid/flu to build immunity……..that’s not how it works. Covid damages the immune system, a hard pill to swallow.

People do care.about the wider community, but they care about their own family,s well being more ,if people don't get paid it they are off sick ,and could potentially lose their job if they go off sick to many times ,what do you expect them to do?

MooseBreath · 01/01/2023 09:41

I'm so sorry for your lost. Unfortunately, YABU. I currently have Covid and am staying in (less walking the dog in an empty field). The only reason I know I have it is because I am staying at my in-laws' house, FIL tested positive, and gave DH and I each a test a few days later when we started feeling rotten. DH and I can't afford to buy tests to take at every tickle of the throat, especially with a toddler in nursery where it's more common to have a cold than not.

My toddler had Scarlet Fever/Strep A in early December, which was far worse than the Covid we have now. That's not to say that others won't have Covid worse, but there are other illnesses about and society has to go on regardless.

I'm so very sorry for your loss 💐

People die of the flu and other viruses esp if elderly.

So what? Does that mean we shouldn't bother to try to avoid people dying horribly and unnecessarily of a known virus?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2023 09:44

One simple measure would make a big difference: If you feel unwell and have to go out, then wear a mask in indoor public spaces such as shops and transport. Yes, that doesn't catch asymptomatic respiratory viruses, but it would reduce the amount of virus circulating and certainly would help catch coughs and sneezes which project virus' far and wide. The less virus circulating, the less people will get ill. It doesn't need to be an all or nothing.

I'd like to see masks being worn in medical setting waiting rooms, where vulnerable people are bound to be and my ideal preference would for it to be normal to wear them on public transport where people can't move away from each other. Vulnerable people still need to go to work.

I'm sorry for your loss. But I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to carry on buying Covid tests (now they aren't free) and take one every time they feel poorly. The government has literally decided that we don't need to do this anymore and we don't do it for any other virus like flu for example.
However, I do agree that people should stay at home if they feel poorly or if they have to go out, they should wear a mask.

My dh,currently has a virus ,he has underlying health issues, and according to his employer had taken to much time of f sick and is on a written warning for it ,he is going into work tomorrow despite not being well , because he will lose his job otherwise ,he has no alternative but to go into work

FrostyFifi · 01/01/2023 09:48

I expect people to test if they are ill and isolate themselves until they are clear. I blame those who do not test and spread it around without even wearing a mask.

DH is self employed and can't afford to so sorry but no.

MedComms · 01/01/2023 09:48

When I had Covid I was completely asymptomatic so could have been spreading it without even knowing (as it happened this was 2 years ago and we were still testing regularly, so I found out early on and followed the isolation rules at the time so hopefully didn’t pass it on!) My point being that even if everyone with symptoms wore a mask it could still be spread undetected by a large number of people, particularly as it is often so mild now in the vaccinated. I’m very sorry for your loss, but not sure what measures would help the more vulnerable at this stage.

WaddleAway · 01/01/2023 09:32

I’m sorry to hear about your cousin.
My cousin (aged 59) died of pneumonia 2 weeks ago, not covid related. Respiratory viruses have always killed, and will continue to do so, sadly.

This,as sad as it is, there are many viruses, covid just another, we still have to live.

NoelleSnowman · 01/01/2023 09:50

I am sorry for your loss and grief is all consuming but you cannot expect other people to hide away and not live their lives when covid is nothing more than a minor illness for the majority.

porpy · 01/01/2023 09:50

The problem is free lateral flows and PCR tests are long gone, and many employers just aren’t supportive of testing for covid and taking time off to isolate. I have no choice but to work to pay bills, I can’t keep testing every time I feel poorly.

SnowlayRoundabout · 01/01/2023 09:44

You mean just one certain virus or any of the multitude of others that will kill you?

Cantbebotheredwithchores · 01/01/2023 09:52

@JanusTheFirst sorry for your loss but I think your asking a lot from people.
As pp have said that Flu is rife in hospitals.
My colleagues say it's a lot of Flu A and young people with no health problems have been really poorly.
No LFTs for Flu.
LFTs aren't free anymore. Cost of living crisis going on... heating? Food? Or LFTs??
My hospital Trust aren't even doing PCR for symptomatic staff, asked to do a lateral flow, if positive and you feel well enough you can come back to work within 72hrs and you can't come into contact with extremely clinically vulnerable patients

Most people are selfish in that they care about themselves and their own family more than a stranger they've never met. Its pretty normal. If you felt OK to work and wouldn't get paid if you didn't, I think most people would prioritise paying their own bills and feeding their own family. (Obviously an advantage if you can afford to isolate, or WFH - but not everyone can)

Flowers OP I'm v sorry for your loss, grief is always hard but possibly more so at a time when others are getting together and celebrating. I feel like covid has taken a backseat in the news/people's consciousness because the current focus is the cost of living.

Perhaps you ought to tell the Chinese about your 'simple measure'. Almost 100% mask wearing and they have no covid at all. Oh, hang on a minute . . .

Thatweredeadtightoncheryl · 01/01/2023 09:53

I understand you're upset about your cousin and I am sorry for your loss.People die every day, 1 in 2 die of cancer.
You can't prevent people from going when it is their time, whether it be by covid, cancer, MND, Alzheimers etc.
We've sacrificed enough to the covid machine and I do intend to get on with Normal life, which includes staying away from people if I'm really ill. But I always did that.
You can't know if the person she caught it from was asymptomatic.

I'm sorry for your pain but blaming others isn't the answer, when it's our time to go, we can't stop it.

I think you have anxiety issues. There has always been viruses and always will be. Many more dangerous than covid. Covid, or rather the government response to it, has caused massive anxiety in some people.

JangolinaPitt · 01/01/2023 09:55

YABU - s so many have said it is another cause of death like the millions there already are.

35965a · 01/01/2023 09:56

I am sorry for your loss. Illnesses kill people every day. It’s awful and horrible but it’s true.

Noonesperfect · 01/01/2023 09:59

My daughter, only 20 is still suffering from Long Covid, and feels very sad that no one seems to give a damn anymore. Would it really hurt people to wear a mask 😷, especially if they know they have some virus that can kill others. I'm saddened by some peoples uncaring attitudes. I'm very sorry for your loss OP.
Also if Covid is just like other viruses why don't we have Long Flu clinics? Long cold clinics?

JustDanceAddict · 01/01/2023 09:59

Sorry to hear about your cousin. My cousin died suddenly a few years ago and it’s a horrible shock (in her 60s). Unfortunately people die from viruses & bacterial infection all the time be it covid, flu, meningitis or something else. I knew someone who was prob in their 50s years ago who died from flu. I’m sure their relatives were cursing the person who went out feeling ill, but the fact is you’re contagious before symptoms appear.
You can’t stop people living their lives now there’s no restrictions - there have also been so many people who’ve struggled with mental health post pandemic especially young people. The fallout from that is a total nightmare.

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 09:59

Tests cost money, they aren't free

Employers don't pay you to sit at home 'isolating'

Sorry for your loss but we aren't doing those things anymore.

Shoxfordian · 01/01/2023 10:00

I’m sorry for your loss as well but if it wasn’t covid then it could have been the flu or any other type of virus that’s still around. We have to move on

I sympathise with anyone who has to go into work while feeling ill - employers have definitely got stricter on sick leave as relating to covid type viruses, I know mine has. But I guess they have to balance keeping employees safe with the needs of the business.
I hope your husband will wear a mask. That is what I intend to do if I have to work with a virus though I am asthmatic and I hate them as they make me feel more breathless.

There have always been post viral complications that can lead to long term illness. Sadly until Covid hit very little funding and support was provided to those suffering.
