On course for another lockdown?

Covis cases on a rapid rise, heading towards 100,000 daily cases. Are we heading for another lockdown?

OP posts:
SleepingStandingUp · 19/03/2022 11:27

when was the last actual lockdown and what were the case AND death figures at that time? That should give you some indication to the answer

rhizobium · 19/03/2022 11:29

@WonderfulYou

You wish. I'm sure some morbid people get excited at the thought.

I hate opinions like this that try and shut people down from discussing things.

The whole way through if you even mentioned the word lockdown you were accused of loving them and wanting them to continue forever to try and silence anyone who agreed with the restrictions.

This

As soon as you point out claims that are not true like that oft touted lockdown study or that "the pandemic is over" you get accused of being a fanatic or someone who loves lockdown.

There is nuance here, and there are lots of measures that could be put in place (such as continuing to fund the ONS survey) that are far removed from being a lockdown but would help in terms of minimising risks in the near future.

@REP22

I don't think there will be another imminent lockdown, but I wish there would be. Last week, my 80-year-old mum, who is CV because she's had cancer twice, having kept safe for two years, was persuaded to go on an organised holiday (here in the UK) with a group of friends (all older than her). ALL of them have now got the virus, my mum quite badly, all have been triple-vaccinated.

I'm very cross about it as well as worried and distressed.

But I suppose we'll have to wait and see what develops with this new BA.2 variant. The only predictable thing about it is that it's unpredictable. Sad

You're wishing for everyone to be locked down because your CV mum chose to go on holiday and caught Covid?
Hawkins001 · 19/03/2022 11:32

Anything is possible, just because we presume x, does not always equal y. Etc

Goldfishbowls · 19/03/2022 11:33

Of course we need to learn to live with it. What option is there?

So you think removing all mitigations is a good idea because masks, social distancing, ventilation etc is a massive sacrifice and impingement for personal freedom? Currently workplaces, healthcare and education are hotbeds for infection and causing a lot of problems. Repeat high levels of infection are causing long term health problems. This isn’t learning to live with it, it’s actively ignoring it and kicking the can spdown the road.

Social distancing IS a massive sacrifice for many industries, yes. Like pubs, clubs, theatres.

My thoughts entirely.

And they said those opposing restrictions were selfish.

@REP22 wait, what?

Your mother made the decision to go in holiday (I'm assuming she wasn't forced to against her will) despite being CV and cases being so high, predictably caught Covid - and you think this is a good reason for lockdown to be imposed?

I'm CEV and I wouldn't go on a group holiday right now. When cases are lower I might. If I feel happy about my level of protection I might (I have covid now for the fifth time but I'm also quadruple jabbed, unfortunately the last one was just a few days prior to my current infection so didn't help with it). Basically I'd weigh up the situation and take it from there.

But if I caught Covid no way would I say that my personal choice was reason for lockdown. It's crackers that you think so.

What does your mum think? Does she agree with you?

Goldfishbowls · 19/03/2022 11:40

So is repeat staff sickness, repeat infections, and long COVID.

And still people can't understand that social distancing is not just a harmless thing which means "probably best not to hug" and "there might be an empty seat next to me hopefully".

After all this time they're still too blind to see its results?

When we were obliged to "social distance" (ridiculous term) in summer 2020, this meant my business taking only 60% of its proper capacity (outside). Yes the government stepped in and threw money at us to plug the gap....and everyone is now paying for that. When all along it was so utterly stupid and and unnecessary.

Social distancing is a massive sacrifice to the venues which can't operate with it in place, and their staff. I honestly can't believe that two years on people don't understand this.

Masks mandates also make huge swathes of hospitality etc unviable.

I've said what I think needs to be done to protect the vulnerable. Using a sledgehammer to crack a nut is, well, nuts.

IcedPurple · 19/03/2022 11:41

@HesterShaw1

Tell that to my fit and healthy friend who narrowly avoided being hospitalised or the little girl I know who now has really poorly controlled asthma after her mild case of omicron.

These "tell that" posts are so unutterably tedious.

Yes, I don't think people understand that the word 'most' means just that. Most. There will always be people who get a very bad dose, but that doesn't mean that it's not, generally speaking, a mild disease.

Just because someone's marathon running 40 year old friend got Omicron 17 times, each time more 'wiped out' than the last, doesn't invalidate that fact.

Absolutely. Obviously the poster is worried for her mum but she made a choice to go away on holiday so that means everyone else should be locked down too? Baffling.
Chloemol · 19/03/2022 11:42

No
It’s just being allowed to spread now, with no support for those that will be off sick and not paid and small businesses suffering as, whereas with SD , having to isolate etc there was some mitigation, now they have loads off and it’s causing issues

But hey the mask haters and isolation haters are happy now

Working in a "non essential" industry where we can't WFH I can tell you that the prospect of losing our jobs was much scarier than catching Covid, about half of us have had it now and no one has got long Covid.

It's the opposite at the small business where I work. We haven't had a big outbreak since August last year. And the isolation was more of a problem than the actual illness for a lot of us, I was well enough to work when I had Covid but because I can't WFH I had to have 10 days off.
BeardyButton · 19/03/2022 11:47

Yes. I think there will. Possibly not in the immediate future.

I find it ironic that the current super bank holiday in Ireland, supposedly to thank front lines workers, is going to kick our pandemic up a notch in the nxt weeks. I dare say hospital staff are not feeling very appreciated at that prospect.

Londoncallingme · 19/03/2022 11:56

I hope so 😀 I LOVED lockdown.

RosaMoline · 19/03/2022 11:57

There used to be a plethora of these repetitive threads back in the day.
Thought I’d seen the back of them, but lo & behold, they’re back again.
In answer to the OP: no there won’t be, thank goodness. Life needs to get back to pre pandemic now. Covid isn’t over, but we need to learn to exist with it. It was always expected there would be an inevitable surge after all restrictions were lifted. I read today that it will be expected to peak soon, then we will hopefully see cases etc start to gradually decrease.
I caught covid and went back to work literally two days before self isolation was lifted. I work in the funeral business, and had to continue working through this pandemic which was fine, but I only got SSP. That’s loyalty for you!
On another note, I’m triple jabbed. For me, it wasn’t even a cold. Very very mild symptoms, almost non-existent.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 19/03/2022 11:57

we have another lockdown and cases go down... but then what? At some point the lockdown will end and cases will go up again.

That's just how it is. Covid is shit. But it's here to stay. We can't get rid of it. Get vaccinated/boosted and get on with your life.
