On course for another lockdown?

Covis cases on a rapid rise, heading towards 100,000 daily cases. Are we heading for another lockdown?

I can’t work from home either. I’m also sick to death of people and government adopting the fatalistic approach to a virus which could be managed better.

FourChimneys · 19/03/2022 11:59

What would be the public mood if the next variant or next novel virus killed children rather than older people? Do you think there would be more of a willingness to accept restrictions? Not necessarily lockdown but masks, school closures etc?

BeautifulGreenEyes · 19/03/2022 11:59

Scaremongering alert! Hmm

BINGO!
Hummingbirdcake · 19/03/2022 12:02

I doubt it, hope not. Maybe some people should think about getting vaccines and wearing masks in shops/on public transport though.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/03/2022 12:03

@Londoncallingme

I hope so 😀 I LOVED lockdown.
You can do your own lockdown. Stay home all the time if you want to. But don't force it on the rest of us who actually enjoy going out and seeing people.
Mummyme87 · 19/03/2022 12:03

No, don’t think so. Hospitals are concerning however, rates are rising quite rapidly, went from 30 to 80 in a few days in my trust

TypicaIMe · 19/03/2022 12:03

There used to be a plethora of these repetitive threads back in the day.
Thought I’d seen the back of them, but lo & behold, they’re back again

Yes, it's very retro, isn't it?!

Happily these days though they're less frequent than they used to be, and the views ('you're HAPPY people are dying' versus 'I licked the postman today and if you didn't you love lockdowns) less extreme, although some hyperbole persists unfortunately.

Teateaandmoretea · 19/03/2022 12:04

@FourChimneys and that is relevant to the discussion because?

Do you think old people would be willing to be locked down for something that didn’t affect them, I doubt it very very much.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/03/2022 12:05

I don't think there will be another imminent lockdown, but I wish there would be. Last week, my 80-year-old mum, who is CV because she's had cancer twice, having kept safe for two years, was persuaded to go on an organised holiday (here in the UK) with a group of friends (all older than her). ALL of them have now got the virus, my mum quite badly, all have been triple-vaccinated.

So because your mum cannot be trusted to make a responsible decision for herself we all need to be locked up?

Maybe. But let's be honest, children dying is more abhorrent to people than old people dying. I include myself in that. I'd be sad if my elderly grandparent died, but I'd be devastated beyond belief if my 8yo DS died.
Teateaandmoretea · 19/03/2022 12:06

And you think your mum would have been better just locked up for the rest of her life to ‘stay safe’?

BluebellsGreenbells · 19/03/2022 12:07

Of course we need to learn to live with it. What option is there?

There should’ve been investment options - more air purifying - investment in additional staff, like teachers, doctors, nurses, more funding for the operations needed to clear backlogs for hundreds of people needing treatment, same for children needing a boost, - investment in GP surgeries so they can deal with vast numbers of people awaiting referrals.

Additional cash for redeployment opportunities - lorry driver shortage anyone?

They know these things were a priority and still did nothing.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/03/2022 12:07

My biggest worry is young people with GCSEs and A Levels imminent. I really would not want them to miss out on sitting their exams this summer.

So where’s the contingency plan?

Exactly this! Anyone who actively WANTS another lockdown must have rocks in their head. Hmm SOME of us have people we want to see and spend time with, and don't' want to be holed up away from everyone. Who the fuck would actively CHOOSE that? Confused

Like some others here, I am sick of these ludicrous, scaremongering threads! Hmm

What would the public mood be in a totally different scenario? Probably totally different. Next.
Nnique · 19/03/2022 12:12

No. And we don’t want another one either.

I get that a lot of people on MN hate people, socialising and generally leaving their own homes but they have the choice to do that if they want to. Find a WFH job, there's plenty around nowadays, stay indoors forever. Go for it. You don't need a lockdown to live your life how you want to!

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 19/03/2022 12:13

@REP22

I'm very cross about it as well as worried and distressed.

But I suppose we'll have to wait and see what develops with this new BA.2 variant. The only predictable thing about it is that it's unpredictable. Sad

So because your mum made the decision for herself to go and risk catching Covid, you want the whole country in a lockdown? If your mum was worried she could have said no and not gone. There won't be another lockdown thankfully. At some point we have to believe people can make decisions for themselves and their health. Closing things and tanking industries is not the way to do it.
MintJulia · 19/03/2022 12:15

No, unless a new version arrives that has a high mortality rate, and people are scared into isolating.
The public appetite for more restrictions is almost nil.

Lurkerlot · 19/03/2022 12:15

Only when the virus breaks through the vaccine, and hospital cases and fatalities rise.

HermioneWeasley · 19/03/2022 12:15

How many people have a cold?

Rates of a mild virus don’t matter

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/03/2022 12:19

@BluebellsGreenbells there is one. They've all done (as far as I'm aware) two sets of mocks which will be taken into account if the external exams don't go ahead. Great for those who have knuckled down already, less so for the 'pull it out of the bag when required' brigade, such as DD.

MorrisZapp · 19/03/2022 12:19

Oh don't be bloody silly. Lockdown isn't coming back, however much you yearn for it.
