moving to the NHS regions in England. Starting in the South West where numbers in hospital have bucked the wider picture in England. Though again the seven day average was just over 100 a year ago and around 1600 today.

deaths within 28 days by date of death - taking the seven day average up to 28th March. Again a gradual upward trajectory although the seven day average at 110 is still less than half the figure earlier this year and hugely lower than the peak in January 2021. Although at end March 2021 the seven day average was around 40

share any ideas of what the endgame is now? Herd immunity? Endemic phase? Surely we can’t all just keep getting infected an infinitum

This is the endgame yes, and it's the endgame we've got to with other respiratory viruses that cause "colds", the other coronaviruses, RSV etc. We all get lots of colds each year, many of them with few or no symptoms but we'd "test positive" for them if we tested in the same way.

We're extremely fortunate that covid is very low risk for children, it's risks come with older immune systems that fail to deal with the new challenge, kids deal with it well - better than RSV for example.

I guess the big remaining question is how long it takes while there's excess vulnerability (ie more people who are particularly at risk from catching covid over being vulnerable enough through age and other conditions that any respiratory virus is high risk) Will a few repeated infections and the vaccines being enough to rapidly bring that state, or do we need to wait until the younger immune systems have aged into that state.

Does anyone know the logic behind the fact that only free LFT's can be registered on the NHS site and not paid for ones? I don't understand it.

@DoraSpenlow

Does anyone know the logic behind the fact that only free LFT's can be registered on the NHS site and not paid for ones? I don't understand it.
The cynic in me says it's so the case numbers look nice and low, but I suspect it's more likely a technical problem that no one can be bothered to fix. I've not quite run out of free ones yet, but do the paid for ones have QR codes?
amicissimma · 06/04/2022 16:21

Are we still supposed to report negative (NHS) LFTs?

I have been reporting religiously since we started using them and it feels really odd not to.

(Yes, I know hardly anyone else does, but I like them to have the data.)

sirfredfredgeorge · 06/04/2022 17:22

I cannot imagine any point in registering negatives.

I imagine the registering of positives is purely technical, and I'm not sure the value of updating the system to be able to register any tests.

boys3 · 06/04/2022 17:51

Bit of a correction to deaths within 28 days of a positive test in England. 2714 deaths added retrospectively today seemingly all having a date of death in 2022. Taking the seven day average based on a week’s lag to mid 170s rather than around the 110 mark. Still of course lower than earlier this year, and far below the peaks of Jan 2021.

I read somewhere that Boots is selling registerable tests and non registerable (cheaper) tests. The former were sold to them by the govt in a deal so they could offload excess "free" ones?

Most people I've know haven't been reporting positives either recently.

I know correlation is not causation and there's no numbers etc given as yet but still there has to be a high likelihood this could be linked to covid being allowed to spread through unvaccinated children....

It seems a possibility from the wording - "Investigations for a wide range of potential causes are underway, including any possible links to infectious diseases". Interestingly, it notes that the usual viruses that cause hepatitis were not detected. 60 cases so far.

I wonder if this has been observed in other countries where they had a huge omicron wave in children?

containsnuts · 07/04/2022 07:48

Scotland too. 11 kids in hospital. Seems it's an unusual/rare form of the diseases Sad
