Thanks @boys3 , that's really helpful. I think % positive is going to be a useful scale going forward.

Tom Peacock has continued to update this thread on recombinants so I'm attaching again for anyone interested. They seem to be popping up all over the place.

Couple more European BA.1 x BA.2 recombinants designated - XM and XN:

XM - mainly Netherlands and Germany, ~60 sequences
XN - another UK recombinant, ~100 sequences currently

Could someone with a greater depth of understanding than me (perhaps @sirfredfredgeorge @boys3 or any of the other extremely knowledgeable posters on this thread) share any ideas of what the endgame is now? Herd immunity? Endemic phase? Surely we can’t all just keep getting infected an infinitum?

I read an interesting article yesterday, if I can find again I will link it, about how vaccine work now needs to move to one that stops transmission and also delivering them in more efficient ways, such as nasal sprays, combined with the annual flu vaccine programme. I think it was in the guardian.

InMySpareTime · 04/04/2022 09:33

The endgame is the endemic phase, where a combination of vaccine and infection based immunity makes breakthrough infections less likely to result in hospitalisation or death, and the few serious cases have treatment options.
Eventually it will just be another cold (I don't think we're quite there yet, maybe after next winter, variant dependent).

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 04/04/2022 10:32

Thanks @InMySpareTime timeline was going to be my next question.

ThatsGoingToHurt · 04/04/2022 16:15

Does anyone know of the stats are still being updated on the gov.uk website daily. I know they are not updating at the weekend.

@ThatsGoingToHurt

Does anyone know of the stats are still being updated on the gov.uk website daily. I know they are not updating at the weekend.
They have not yet announced firm plans to stop. Dashboard not yet updated today although Mondays now they have stooped weekend reporting has been well after 16:00 in terms of update.

New on dashboard - reinfections broken down by date and age group:

Interestingly in our area there are more reinfections in the 10-14yo age category than any other. That's interesting because really the 10-14yo age category only really started getting lots of infections in October 2021.

herecomesthsun · 04/04/2022 17:57

10-14s have been very exposed compared to the wider community, and had relatively less access to vaccines than older groups, so it makes sense that some of them would have been repeatedly infected.

MargaretThursday · 04/04/2022 18:42

@herecomesthsun
Yes, it does very much show that vaccines work. Round here the school roll out was dreadful, and a lot of people waited for that. My dc's school, although they were originally scheduled for before October half term, they didn't actually get in until about a fortnight ago. And that's just for the first jab.

Also the 90+ age category is another noticeable reinfection number. It's going round the nursing homes for at least the third time now.

boys3 · 04/04/2022 19:57

start of another week so update on the health metrics in England, usual formats.

Starting with hospital admissions remembering these are two days behind number in hospital, whether those first signs of a dip over the past couple of reported is sustained remains to be seen.

number in hospital has continued to rise, so whilst many of these are admissions for another reason the impact of managing covid positives in hospitals remains a pressure. Current seven day average just under 16,000 as compared with just under 3,000 at the same time last year.

ventilator beds still below the number at this time last year, and below the number at the start of this year. So whilst a recent, though not rapid, upward trajectory this is perhaps easing
