I don't contribute but pop in from time to time to say hi. I'm a lurker and dip in and out of these threads, they have been absolutely fantastic throughout. X

How many data threads have there been now? Is it a record? Yes I am just placemarking. Thanks boys

JanglyBeads · 18/01/2022 23:50

Since we stopped numbering them it'd be difficult to count.

There are several (lots of?) other long-running series of threads of MN. One of the other ones I'm in is on its 84th iteration....
They are fascinating little communities.

The press seems to think Plan B measures will all be dropped from the 26th Jan, just leaving masks in shops and on transport. Despite the north only just reaching peak.

Interesting study suggests that many reported vaccine side effects are "nocebo effect" alone.

I was fascinated by nocebo effect. I do remember reading that people could predict "the type" to react. I reacted to one of mine and I do have a number of conditions - but it felt very real. I'd love to ve able to "unthink" my way out of my conditions! I guess everyone would have felt very real symtoms. It's fascinating.

Hello, I have a question about how the daily case numbers are counted. In Wales they count reinfections but England doesn't. What counts as a reinfection do you know? We all had Covid early November so presumably delta, if we catch it again now it would likely be Omicron. Would we count as a new infection and included in daily figures or would we be considered a reinfection so not included? (We're in England).

you'd be a re-infection and therefore not included in the current totals.

There are plans I think for the dashboard to include re-infections (however defined) from end on the month possibly a flexible timescale

Presumably retrospectively and at age and lower level geography detail.

a quick table just on absolute daily case numbers by age band up to yesterday based on the gender files available through the dashboard. This is just at the overall England level.

New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that deaths in England and Wales were 7.8 per cent below the five-year average for the week ending Jan 7.

The fall remains even though the ONS has removed 2020 from its five-year average figure because the first year of the pandemic was so extreme.

When 2021 was also removed, there were just 87 more deaths than expected, which experts said was "nothing unusual", arguing that the 922 Covid deaths reported that week were being offset by fewer deaths from traditional winter killers such as flu.

The ONS figures also show that the virus was not the primary cause of death in nearly a quarter of the registered Covid deaths.

Further good news.

re children being admitted to hospital

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/01/14/significant-rise-infant-children-hospitalised-covid/

Significant rise in infant children being hospitalised with Covid

Sage data reveal more than four in 10 children admitted are below the age of one, but most are ‘not particularly sick’

...Latest figures also showed a tripling in paediatric admissions since late December, with the sharpest rise among the youngest children, health officials said on Friday.

Prof Calum Semple, a child health and outbreak expert from the University of Liverpool and an adviser to Sage, said: “Our study has shown that there’s been an increased proportion of children being admitted in the last four weeks associated with the onset of omicron. And this has been particularly driven by children under the age of one.”

...Prof Russell Viner, a fellow Sage adviser and professor of adolescent health at University College London (UCL), said: “There’s potentially some evidence that this variant of the virus is affecting the upper airways more than previous variants. Children have much smaller upper airways… they are more likely to get conditions such as croup, and other conditions where they really struggle to breathe.”

French cases seem astonishingly high at the moment. Nearly half a million yesterday.
