Just seen on Sky New there is a news conference tonight at 5, interested to know what will be said...

There hasn’t been the usual rumblings “leaked documents” etc so hopeful just an update, what do we all think?

I think cinema closures are due to lack of staff and it's not financially viable to open when they can have hardly any customers.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 04/01/2022 14:58

Cheers Red I said exactly the same to DH re merging of classes yesterday after speaking to Teacher friend who's had Delta/still recovering and is worried

MortifiedPie · 04/01/2022 14:59

We can book cinema tickets in Odeon near us...

Aposterhasnoname · 04/01/2022 14:59

Honestly the scaremongering bullshit on here sometimes.

@Saucery

Well, they’ve blamed sitting down on a bench eating a bag of crisps for Covid spread in the past, so maybe they need another scapegoat and that’s overpriced Pic N Mix and tutting loudly at people on their phone all the way through James Bond.
😂

It is crazy how people take an idea and just run with it without checking whether it's actually true - I posted above, at least two cinema chains have tweeted today explaining that the 'gap' in listings is because yesterday was a bank holiday so they're only getting onto updating them today - nothing sinister at all!
RedToothBrush · 04/01/2022 15:07

@Biscuitandacuppa

Just had a look at Odeon’s website and there are no booking’s available from Friday so I suspect they are shutting cinemas.
Re: might be more practical with cinemas in that they are struggling to staff them.

So no advance bookings in January from next week (its not exactly peak season) so they can be more flexible and just do walk ins as its unlikely they will sell out any showings anyway and they can bin off some screenings to manage staffing.

The fact that there is no leak in the press yet about the possibility of cinemas closing yet websites are already doing this (so lots of people involved in knowing if it is happening) seems implausable to me.

Its a big headline grabber - PM may be about to shut cinemas is a better front page header than the current Daily Mail one which is:

Boris to hold 5pm press conference TODAY as MPs call for isolation to be cut to five days because 'people are off work but perfectly WELL' and 'Prof Lockdown' admits Omicron is plateauing – but crippling rules see 1m locked away with mild strain

I saw the suggestion of merged classes and just laughed. Its something only those who went to private school could dream up.

The idea of 60 five year olds with one teacher. Or being able to juggle the timetables of 60 kids so that everyone doing GCSE Geography can do it at the same time when its currently time tabled at two different sessions is utterly hilarious.

Worldgonecrazy · 04/01/2022 15:11

I’ve never had cause to check on a Bank Holiday week before. It’s easy to see why the rumour arose, and does seem weird and illogical that I can book for two weekends time, but not this weekend. Thank you for sharing the tweets from the cinema chains explaining their reasons for not having this weekend’s availability yet.

So it’s not bullshit to say that cinemas are not currently taking bookings for this weekend. That some people have said it is linked to tonight’s press conference is wrong, but weirdly understandable given the government’s track record of seemingly illogical behaviour and government via press leaks.

Booster, bleugh, waffle waffle. Heroic waffle , look I have had my hair cut

Bloody hell, some of you will believe any flippin nonsense.

Yup. And something out how we are the only country in the world that ever ran a vaccination programme.
Worldgonecrazy · 04/01/2022 15:17

I’m much more worried that Johnson has brushed his hair than by the cinema bookings delay.

Whitefire · 04/01/2022 15:18

@GirlInACountrySong

hadn't heard this on todays news but did hear how hospitals are in a bad way...so possibly restrictions

bloody hope not though....2022 feels quite hopeful so far!

To be fair it is only the 4th, but appreciate all that we can.
Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2022 15:22

No idea what he's going to say, and is anyone even watching any more? Whatever he says it'll be wrong no doubt.

Regardless MN will go slightly bonkers going on about his hair/resignation just like normal.

abra1d1 · 04/01/2022 15:24

Sky wars (chemtrails) and 5G switch also happening around the same time, according to Twitter. You have been warned!!!!!

JessyCarr · 04/01/2022 15:31

Perhaps he’s recently taken Wilf to Legoland and wants to tell us all how it compares to Peppa Pig World.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 04/01/2022 15:34

@Motorina

"Blah blah" ruffle hair "blah blitz spirit. Glorious NHS ... booster programme success! Get your booster, go to work, stay home, at work, blah. Schools, resilience, flexibility, glorious education, blah." Ruffle hair.
This. He must think that we're all missing his stellar media performances and we could do with another one.

All the mood music has been very anti new restrictions so I don't think that's coming today.

Polmuggle · 04/01/2022 15:37

There was a BBC news alert yesterday that the guidance would stay at plan B moving forwards, so no reason to suspect new restrictions.

Last time I saw him with hair that looked brushed and wetted down was the day he tested positive for Covid.
ElftonWednesday · 04/01/2022 15:54

I'm going to the gym at 5pm so hopefully they aren't closing gyms.

chocolateisavegetable · 04/01/2022 15:54

Javid is saying no need to move beyond plan B, and that they will not be reducing isolation time to 5 days. So it looks like it's just "look at my fabulous new hair cut, vaccinations, boosters, NHS wonderful, 1000s of ex-teachers definitely turned up today, blah, blah, blah"
