That particular poll, just over a month ago, was not extreme though; it's pretty much where we are now.

Ohsofedupwiththis · 02/01/2022 22:41

Apparently the peak of cases last winter was on December 29th.

I don't imagine that will be complete yet. Cases still to be added.

What do you mean where we are now?

Measured against what?

And you’re missing the point about self selecting and type of responders.

I’m surprised anyone still relies on it..

herecomesthsun · 02/01/2022 22:45

It is addressing the exact issue of whether there should be masks in school, in classrooms etc.

Not relying on it as such, it would however seem a better indicator of public opinion that newspaper comments, as a relatively large sample.

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2022 22:47

nearly 6000 people

Comments section is 4k so not far off - 4k self selectors v nearly 6

herecomesthsun · 02/01/2022 22:49

comments section of what?

Firefliess · 02/01/2022 22:50

@containsnuts Whether I've reported any cold or allergy symptoms on Zoe I got invited to take a test. But I only discovered this after several months because the emails went to my Gmail "promotions" folder that I rarely check. You might find you have emails from them there or in junk

Ohsofedupwiththis · 02/01/2022 22:52

I'm not sure I understand the arguments re masks?

Are people against it or accept it as a necessary evil?

Surely anything that keeps kids in school is worth it?

I don't generally think the comments section or any newspaper, especially extreme right wing papers, are representative of the general population. They seem to attract the worst in the population and give a distorted view of what the general mood is.

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2022 23:04

It is a section of society yes, as is mn, but I looked it up after pp suggested mn was skewed against.

It’s really not.

amicissimma · 02/01/2022 23:12

@IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas, as I said, my figures are from my notes. Being a nerd, every day I note down the figures from the gov dashboard on that day. I can make no argument about why those figures may, or may not differ from some screenshot a random has taken of another site which may, or may not, be updated as more data come in.

I think that my figures thus provide a direct comparison of those reported on that day. Which may, or may not, be useful. I find them interesting, but you don't have to.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2022 23:13

If it's the DM, many of the 'comments' are from Americans and/or bots.

herecomesthsun · 02/01/2022 23:15

oooh the Maaail

It is certainly a section of society.

A very particular section of society though Grin especially the comments bit. Goodness me, that is scraping the barrel.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2022 23:16

marsha,I never sad the majority of MN. I very specifically said some posters on here are representing that the anti masks /school mitigation group is a majority view. It is definitely not a widely held MN view. Just a very loud one.

Hmm

Again I’m not saying it’s accurate.

But if anyone thinks mn has a strong skew in one direction take a look around

So not ‘scraping the barrel’ as irritating as that comes across.

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2022 23:22

And probably as insightful as the often quoted YouGov polls tbh

If as pp said no one cared about the issue you wouldn’t get media response as you do.

herecomesthsun · 02/01/2022 23:22

dredging the dregs lol

I love the DM. It really does entertain at times. And if I am really bored I go to the comments section.

I agree that the comments in papers like the DM are generally either repugnant and just plain stupid.

Yes they are repugnant, Mn is a tea party in comparison.

Any claim that mn is skewed or awash with the same is wrong.

amicissimma · 02/01/2022 23:28

"Remember also, the number of people working in the public sector, health, education, social services etc is enormous. If there are a lot of people in these areas on mumsnet - it is in fact representative of wider society, in that."

A quick Google tells me that, in June 2020, 16.7% of people employed in the UK worked in the public sector. Do you think that is fairly well represented by Mumsnet?

Jonathan Van Tam and Cath Noakes summarise some of the science on filtration, ventilation and masks:

@Ohsofedupwiththis I think she means last winter, ie 12 months ago. Not sure it'll necessarily be the same this year though, as we did enter a pretty strict lockdown immediately after Christmas last year - this year it may go on rising a bit more first, and then likely to decline more slowly than it did under last year's lockdown and vaccine combo against alpha strain. My guess would be that we'll top out at around 300,000 cases a day around mid January - based on other regions following the same curve as inner London.
herecomesthsun · 02/01/2022 23:33

Ok, I don't think that looking at the comments section in the DM is in any way a reasonable assessment of the opinions of the wider British public Smile.

(My parents used to get the Mail many years ago, I used to read YOU magazine when I went to visit them maybe 30 years ago, confession Smile)

But the comments section isn't really a good yardstick.

I think that many people are being extremely careful right now, they want to get through this without closed schools and lockdowns and they will do what they can, most of them, to manage through. The DM comments like as not will not reflect the quiet majority. I guess we'll see.

I

I don’t think this is true actually

It’s a minority view on here that is broadly contested by many. I think you are more likely to notice it as it’s not in line with your view (we all do that)

And this is not like other sections of SM that I mentioned.

Yes it is unsavoury etc but it still shows the difference in what is online
