😅 Yes they've been busy today Piggy. I don't understand the hate either. So many schools locally took this approach independently before Christmas to try to minimise transmission.

Dghgcotcitc · 02/01/2022 21:16

But furlough was an emergency measure when a lockdown was a one off thing. Honestly I went to theatre on Boxing Day, I have had three vaccines, took a lateral flow before I went abs wire a mask if that is not enough for a theatre to open in December then we accept they shut every December surely? At which point business will be expected to manage the cost (by charging more when open) the state wouldn’t be expected to endure the cost now lockdown is a way of life surely..we don’t pay ski resorts to be shut in the summer because there is no snow! Covid in the winter seems as inevitable as no snow in summer going forwards and something we either as a society live with or as a society expect business to plan for the inevitable winter lockdown. It’s not March 2020 anymore and living with covid isn’t realistically going to involve the state paying private sector wages for three months a year for the long term..or are people expecting that?!

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2022 21:20

Various -

Lower appetite for measures that affect children.

Vaccines now here changing views

Fatigue over any new restrictions generally

Views on masks working in Scotland or not

Probably more

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2022 21:25

I don't agree marsha. A lot of people have been anxious about schools closing and calling for simple measures. The masks are to try to prevent more severe measures that affect children.

I think some posters on MN may be convincing you that there is more antipathy to masks than there is! Plenty of schools had masks before Christmas.

I do think elements are allowing the use of masks in school to be manipulated in a general rhetoric about restrictions in general.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2022 21:26

And let us remember , no vaccines for anyone 11 and under yet. Most 12-16 year olds have only had one jab.

Or at least their users have priority?

They're at KCL - they'll have plenty of access to PCRs if they did need - it's fairly standard kit for uni labs!

I'm on the app but haven't had to do a PCR since joining. Don't you just book through the goverment site but select 'part if a study' so you get a test with non classic symptoms and results sent to Zoe? I thought they were all proceed the same way otherwise?

I can see you’d feel differently working in a school

But just in case it is just mn I looked at the comments sections of papers. It made here seem pretty tame in comparison.

The media know it’s a headline story and why - people are reacting and they get clicks / comments because people do feel strongly enough

I agree with you - they just use the normal routes, but they won't be limited if there are any capacity issues as they'll have access to their own labs if necessary.
Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2022 21:47

Because- in the absence of any other measures - it is something to latch on to. It'll blow over. Possibly because there will be bigger things to focus on.

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2022 21:51

It’s still an indication of mood re measures for school children.

Made me realise how moderate (and moderated) this site is in comparison.

It’s definitely not mn showing a skewed picture against.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2022 21:54

Well, I'll await an actual verified survey.

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2022 21:58

Ok if you want to.

It doesn’t support the idea that the generally people are anxious nor that mn is somehow an outlier against. If anything it swings the other way quite markedly.

But like a YouGov poll, mn and paper comments it’s part of a picture - a self selecting one

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2022 21:59

Some hopeful stuff in here, but with caution applied and some concern about LFDs as jangly has mentioned:

www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/02/new-studies-reinforce-belief-that-omicron-is-less-likely-to-damage-lungs

Unless it has changed VERY recently, app users book a pcr through the usual govt channel. The tests are sent/done in the same way as every other pcr test.

The ONLY difference is that an app user can book without having to state that they have the classic covid symptoms - they can instead state that they have been invited by the Zoe app.

There is no 'priority', no special test and no special test labs. I have no idea what this rubbish information is doing on this thread.

@amicissimma

Interesting. From my notes the figures taken from the dashboard on the date shown:

Patients admitted to hospital:
15.12.20 1637
15.12.21 774
29.12.20 2322
29.12.21 1213

Patients in hospital:
31.12.20 23,813
31.12.20 11,918

Patients in mechanical ventillation beds:
30.12.20 1847
30.12.21 868

How odd.

I double checked and took screen shots

I don't think the comments section of eg the Telegraph and the Mail are a reliable gauge of public perception re measures in schools. Those are self selecting in a very particular way.

@herecomesthsun

Every part of SM is self selecting as I said

Including mn and YouGov

But they are still an indication of mood whether people want to dismiss that or not. And it’s not people who are anxious and phew saying finally masks…

My other point was if anyone thinks this site is against, and is skewed in any way by posters in that direction, it really isn’t. By comparison it is very pro public sector / staff and (self) moderates very closely to that.

Where can you get an accurate read anyway? Not YouGov that’s for sure. Not here. Not Twitter.

You need non self selecting.

herecomesthsun · 02/01/2022 22:11

There's a YouGov poll here yougov.co.uk/topics/health/survey-results/daily/2021/11/29/a2b3a/3

Thinking about wearing masks in schools, which of the following do you think should be the case at this time?

Face masks should be required in all areas of secondary schools, including classrooms
51%

Face masks should be required in communal areas of secondary schools, but not classrooms
24%

Face masks should not be required in secondary schools
13%

Don’t know
11%

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2022 22:14

YouGov is as reliable as comments section and mn.

It’s self selecting too

herecomesthsun · 02/01/2022 22:15

Remember also, the number of people working in the public sector, health, education, social services etc is enormous. If there are a lot of people in these areas on mumsnet - it is in fact representative of wider society, in that.

Not that all these people have exactly the same perspective, of course they don't.

And there will be people working in other areas who will be supportive of measures to reduce infection levels too.

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2022 22:21

You can still see the difference in stance if you take as a whole - each area on SM builds own general take. Of course there will be differences.

There are some harsh comments out there. Not here though. No where close to the same general sentiment or number.

Looking at that I feel pretty assured that’s it’s not mn giving a false against position as suggested in pp.

As for an accurate read. Well none of them do as I said. You’d need not to have self selecting.

Really? There seem to be a lot of new posters on here right now fulminating.

The Telegraph has its own little bunch of covid-lovers (and actually appears not to be posting comments that don't agree with its editorial line Grin)

I'd guess that the YouGov poll of nearly 6000 people is the best indicator; it will be interesting to see how things pan out.

My hunch would be that given the rise in cases in the past month, and the risk of schools closing, there would be if anything more support for measures to keep schools open.

IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 02/01/2022 22:33

Apparently the peak of cases last winter was on December 29th.

YouGov can be nuts.

I wouldn’t rely on it at all.

They have odd polls about saving every life or extreme restrictions- it attracts a certain type. That is the issue with self selecting.

I don’t notice new names on there like that but some posters think about U4T more than I do. I see it mentioned on here a lot, more often than I notice the actual group.
