…I remember earlier in the pandemic where delayed days were ones where numbers were enormous.

250,000? What do we think? I’ve got a real feeling of doom

Cocoabutterformula · 30/12/2021 17:13

Can’t help thinking back to this time last year where we were all going into lockdown but it did feel like vaccines were the fix-all. How things have changed!

Fgs, the vaccines HAVE changed everything Hmm

allbartwo · 30/12/2021 17:16

@ohfourfoxache

489k??

Holy fuckballs Sad

Out of a population of how many?
Againstmachine · 30/12/2021 17:22

Out of a population of how many?

About 330 million

FOJN · 30/12/2021 17:22

Out of a population of how many?

Approx 330 million, a high number but it makes the rate of cases per 100k lower than ours. I suspect our "real" number of cases is about half a million a day at the moment and the US will be in excess of a million if they are currently having an Omicron wave.

justasking111 · 30/12/2021 17:33

Wales had 10k over two days announced at lunchtime. 52% positive rate, 3 deaths

Theimpossiblegirl · 30/12/2021 17:34

@Whitefire

They are trying to find more fingers to count on.
I can see Boris taking off his socks...
RobinPenguins · 30/12/2021 17:36

If you have a feeling of doom, step away from Twitter, or whatever platform you’re using to hunt down the figures. Whatever the number reported, if it’s 5,000 or 500,000 doesn’t make any difference to your life right now. It’s not worth making yourself feel shit by doom scrolling. There is nothing to be gained.

Popcornriver · 30/12/2021 17:36

Another confirmation that getting a pcr is impossible atm. BIL tested positive on a lateral flow and can't get a PCR. Nobody else in the family can even get hold of LFTs either.

Youngatheart00 · 30/12/2021 17:41

@RobinPenguins you’re right (although it was just a bbc update I’d seen - I wasn’t deliberately hunting it out)

I’m generally quite level headed but I think I’m just tired and exasperated by it all and we’ve just had a thrice rearranged holiday cancelled again (first world problems I know)

In other news we’ve had no bin collections this week due to covid isolations so the street is a right mess - peoples rubbish has blown all over it

Ah, I just remember the first lockdown where I was scrolling through twitter every day for the latest deaths to be published and it did nothing except make me feel scared. I’ve kept away from the daily figures since then, except when they appear on the news if I’m watching it. And feel more relaxed for it.

Ginlovingmumof4 · 30/12/2021 17:59

@HoardingSamphireSaurus

It's a Christmas delay. It has been explained in a few .gov type sites as such.

Don't borrow trouble.

Don't borrow trouble

I love that phrase! Never heard it before but I will squirrel that away for future use! Grin

Heathway · 30/12/2021 18:02

I’m surprised nothing official has been announced, the number of businesses closed in Essex/ London was shocking today- all due to Covid outbreaks amongst staff.

JanglyBeads · 30/12/2021 18:31

It is a good phrase. Derives from Jesus' teaching in the sermon on the Mount - "Sufficient unto the day are the troubles thereof" in the old version.

Modern translations have it as
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Bailey48 · 30/12/2021 18:32

They are testing around 1.5 mill per day so of course cases will be up everyone has a cold with this variant.

This will be 6 days of data too

The problem is everyone isolating !

justasking111 · 30/12/2021 18:33

Wanted to take DS out for lunch today two restaurants closed two only doing evenings one unavailable until 3rd January. All covid the one we finally booked had five staff off,

LesLavandes · 30/12/2021 18:37

You sound like old ladies gossiping.

Just carry on, taking as many precautions as possible, buy the best masks, stay home if you can. No parties, theatre trips, nye soirées, just do your best but dont get overly wound up if figures are a few hours late

Sasketchewoo · 30/12/2021 18:39

If it helps, have a look at the government data for hospitalisations (rather than daily admissions) and ventilation beds. It's stable. It's fascinating! I know we have a rough few weeks ahead of us but it really doesn't look like we're getting a spike in deaths or people on ventilators generally. The issues this is causing us is more from so many people being ill at once.

zafferana · 30/12/2021 18:40

Zoe app is saying 194,450 new cases today.

BruceAndNosh · 30/12/2021 18:43

I've never been much of a data nerd, in that I don't delve any deeper than the daily headline figures. But I've always assumed that Postive means on either LFT or PCR. But are the official figures PCR positives only?

JanglyBeads · 30/12/2021 18:48

@BruceAndNosh the dashboard says this

Cases definition
COVID-19 cases are identified by taking specimens from people and testing them for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. If the test is positive this is referred to as a case. Some positive rapid lateral flow test results are confirmed with lab-based polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests taken within 72 hours. If the PCR test results are negative, these are no longer reported as confirmed cases. If a person has more than one positive test, they are only counted as one case for all nations with the exception of Wales. Cases data includes all positive lab-confirmed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test results plus, in England, positive rapid lateral flow tests that are not followed by a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours.

110APiccadilly · 30/12/2021 18:51

It's most likely because of lower staff levels over Christmas/ New Year period. Possibly also because they're having to deal with a backlog of data - e.g. if they get two or three days' data today when they'd normally only get one, it may well take significantly longer to process it.

It could be due to huge numbers, but it doesn't have to be.

blameitonthecaffeine · 30/12/2021 18:53

People used to say this last year every time the figures were delayed. Sometimes they were right, sometimes they were wrong.

Nannyamc · 30/12/2021 19:04

ROI delayed too. We can see that lab tests at lunch time were 21500 x that by 13 for UK. Which will equate to approx 280000 UK. Not good by any means. No government comment or measures. 50% positivity rate . God help us all...no pcr vacant slots or antigen tests to be had. We are all in the one boat..hope i am wrong!!!!

kittensinthekitchen · 30/12/2021 19:10

I love that PCR testing centres were kept open even on Christmas day, yet the people that put numbers into a calculator and the person that then copies that number onto a database and hits 'upload' were given time off because "Christmas".

BruceAndNosh · 30/12/2021 19:13

Thank you @JanglyBeads
