How can they still say nothing?

So numbers today over 183,000. How can BoJo and his cronies still be making no statement? No clear guidance, nothing. I'm not wanting lockdown or anything but can't believe they're so quiet over all this.

I agree. He came on TV before Christmas, announced we were in an 'emergency ' situation and appears to have fucked off since then..

luckylavender · 29/12/2021 20:02

@Dontforgetyourbrolly - how does that actually work in a pandemic? I'd really like to understand. Unless you stay indoors on your own, you are relying on others to keep you safe.

noblegiraffe · 29/12/2021 20:03

Why are people saying that cases don't matter when those cases each represent someone isolating for at least 7 days? That's a lot of people unable to work.

Services will start falling over as case numbers rise. No one in power is seriously discussing stopping isolations of positive cases, so it is going to be a problem.

StillWalking · 29/12/2021 20:03

What’s is there say that hasn’t been said already? Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last two years you know full well to wear a mask in crowded places, avoid contact with too many people, work from home if possible etc etc etc .... We all know what we need to do ...

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 29/12/2021 20:03

Must be great to be prime minister when expectations are so low that people think you have no responsibility during a pandemic.

crazyjinglist · 29/12/2021 20:03

They prefer to do nothing OP and let us argue it out amount ourselves.

Arguing about it isn't compulsory. Get vaccinated, take sensible precautions, take a test when appropriate.

It sounds as if most of the people hospitalised with covid are either unvaccinated or were in hospital for something entirely unrelated and tested positive while there (probably mostly with mild symptoms, as that's what most get).

WonderfulYou · 29/12/2021 20:05

The government is just letting us get on with our lives. For once, I like their approach.

He should at least be updating people. Telling everyone that yes the cases have reached an all time high but there’s no need to panic etc etc. And yo remind people to continue to ventilate and wear masks etc.

Hospedia · 29/12/2021 20:06

Exactly.

Teachers, HGV drivers, supermarket workers, bus drivers, medical staff, emergebcy services staff, benefits workers, council staff, carers, and so on - we can only have so many off work sick before it starts to impact provision of services and support structures. Even changing rules of self-isolation wouldn't remove the issue as a lot of them would still be unable to come work if actively unwell.

luckylavender · 29/12/2021 20:07

@ElectraBlue - when Omicron is so infectious, case numbers do matter. There will be a knock on effect especially in the NHS.

lightisnotwhite · 29/12/2021 20:07

@SunshineCake1

Surely by now people can make their own decisions to keep themselves safe ?
This.

Do you really need to get told to stay 2m away and not go to the bar? Go to places that are safer or squish up against people in a club. You know the risk to yourself and everyone rise.

VladmirsPoutine · 29/12/2021 20:07

I think we're gonna have a lockdown during the early new year. Boris just didn't want to be seen to be the PM who twice cancelled Xmas and NYE.

kickupafuss · 29/12/2021 20:07

@LethargicActress

The government is just letting us get on with our lives. For once, I like their approach.
What does getting on with our lives mean though?

If there are so many teachers off with Omicron that my DC don't have teachers in January, then I consider that stopping me and them getting on with our lives. If someone in my family needs an ambulance or medical treatment and there are not enough staff to do those things, that also stops me and them getting on with our lives.

WishingWell5 · 29/12/2021 20:08

Its the cases that's the problem, because of the isolation (NHS staff in isolation hence delays in ambulances etc). So I suppose the next step will be, positive test but mild/ no symptoms... Keep calm and carry on?

gulliblestravels · 29/12/2021 20:09

Sigh.
Thats it really, just sigh.
Cold country gets cold during cold season.

TicTacHoh · 29/12/2021 20:09

What guidance do you want, OP? Death rate is low. Cases alone don't tell us much. If you want to isolate, feel free. No one else has to.

Forgotthespuds · 29/12/2021 20:10

What exactly do you want them to say. You know what to do. Social distance, wash your hands wear a mask stay home if sick. If you are sick enough that you need medical assistance call 999.

handbagsgladrags · 29/12/2021 20:12

@ffscovid

More importantly, the hospital admission threshold has been breached Sad
What's the threshold
Terminallysleepdeprived · 29/12/2021 20:12

Politicians are allowed a Christmas break too you know.

You don't want restrictions so what do you want?

They have said hospital admissions are still way below crisis level and largely the current variant is nothing more than a mild cold for the majority of people. For example Dd is CV and at 8 not eligible for the vaccine...she had it the 2 weeks running into Christmas. She has had a bad cold and chronic fatigue. Far less serious than Covid OG and Delta. The worst impact on her has been jaundice, however she gets this with any illness to one degree or another.

There is nothing new to say so why do you think BoJo needs to be all over the news?

TicTacHoh · 29/12/2021 20:12

But we know all this? This pandemic seems to have completely infantilised people, sitting passively awaiting basic instructions.
Namechanger20183110 · 29/12/2021 20:12

The next step is unlikely to be a lockdown - it will be that you only have to isolate for 5 days, to alleviate the pressure on various sectors reporting mass absences. They've just announced this in the US, we will likely follow suit

PaintYourDreams · 29/12/2021 20:14

Did I imagine seeing BJ being interviewed at a vaccine centre today and giving an update/guidance etc?

Lollypop701 · 29/12/2021 20:16

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum
Johnson is no longer in charge. The Tories are a rudderless ship until they get round to replacing him. With whom remains to be seen.
Which of them would be stupid enough to want to take over this shit show?
They're probably all hiding. Johnson is 'it' and he can't find a single one of the fuckers.

Seriously, you win the thread for me!

Namechanger20183110 · 29/12/2021 20:17

The hospital threshold in London has been breached in the past few days, but they think cases are plateauing there, which is a good sign.
Also, NHS bosses have themselves said to interpret this with caution as it doesn't split out which patients have tested positive in hospital after being admitted for something else.

The ambulance issue is concerning, but this is not new, I remember them talking about this years ago when we had a bad flu season and A&E/ambulance wait times were ridiculously long. What did we do then?
I think if anything, the next public message needs to be to remind people to use the service responsibly and don't call an ambulance if you don't have to. Unfortunately there will still be plenty of people who abuse the system in this manner

Hospedia · 29/12/2021 20:18

when Omicron is so infectious, case numbers do matter. There will be a knock on effect especially in the NHS.

180,000 cases a day is 1.26 million a week. Say if only 1% of those need medical intervention, that's 12,600 admissions a week. We have around 6000 critical care beds sonwould have to hope that most of these admissions do not need one.

LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 29/12/2021 20:18

what are people scared about?? its mild

people are coping with it and returning to work
