Rishi says nothing til New Year at least

Overthebow · 27/12/2021 16:53

I’m so pleased, such good news. Everyone can enjoy a proper New Years now!

Eightandahalfyears · 27/12/2021 16:54

Good. Now let's hope he keeps his nerve. Myself and numerous close friends will be on the breadline if restrictions are introduced

rrhuth · 27/12/2021 16:55

Let's hope Johnson has gambled on the right side this time. It is impossible to believe in this government, they have lied all through this and do not care how many people are harmed, both economically and with regard to health.

gogohm · 27/12/2021 16:55

Phew, looking forward to a new year's Eve party

MarshaBradyo · 27/12/2021 16:56

Good, relieved

Plus get to do dc party

rrhuth · 27/12/2021 17:01

I see we are to remain cautious and are advised to celebrate outside.

So they are avoiding compensating businesses and putting all the risk onto individuals.

The country cannot afford to continually compensate businesses.

I really, really hope there aren't restrictions in the new year and that hospitality can continue to trade as normal.

milly74 · 27/12/2021 17:04

And nor should there be

It is the worst possible scenario for hospitality businesses who were hoping to go ahead with their new year events.
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 27/12/2021 17:06

So, it all happens Jan 1st/2nd then.

MarshaBradyo · 27/12/2021 17:08

People will still celebrate inside. I can’t see many taking it into the cold

It’s harder for for Scotland where rules are in place but not much help - staff cost outstrips income and they can’t do event

Tryagainplease · 27/12/2021 17:08

The best decision IMO. Responsibility should remain on the individual to protect themselves and others. No need to make it a legal requirement.

JanglyBeads · 27/12/2021 17:08

I'm extremely worried by this. Hospitalisations are up 68% week on week in London and 45% nationally. And those will result from infections before Christmas mixing.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 27/12/2021 17:10

That doesn't really help the hospitality industry though, bit of a cowardly cop out.
EasterIssland · 27/12/2021 17:11

Thanks god for that

Has the hospitalisation numbers been updated ?

itsgettingweird · 27/12/2021 17:11

I think this shows the data is good. There is a definite reduction in severe cases with this variant and most people are reporting a bad cold for 2-3 days.

I've been very wary of covid the whole way through and was very Ill with initial variant in March 2020. I've known no one as Ill with subsequent variants (anecdotal I do realise!)

But I also work in education within special schools. We've been in throughout and I've noticed people in keyworker/front line roles have a much better risk analysis and are far more against restrictions now. I think being out of home from day 1 and seeing it makes it easier to see the difference now.

And yes, we get it in school and it can spread fast. And I won't deny some of our pupils have been quite ill. One saved by a trial drug.

But that's what I'm seeing - improvements in treatments and vaccination that means we can manage to start living with this.

MarshaBradyo · 27/12/2021 17:13

I can’t see young people reacting to you must be cautious

And I don’t blame them. Maybe the risk averse will / older etc but even then many people are going with new mild messaging

Lightswitch123 · 27/12/2021 17:14

This is brilliant news.

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2021 17:14

The government obviously feel that things can tick along now till next weekend in England
Either the devolved governments will look too cautious and wrong to do what they are doing , or it'll go wrong in England and Boris Johnson will be seen not to be doing enough and it'll be carnage.
Among people I know many are against further restrictions, get on with it all is the general opinion and people just want it to go away
I'm not sure , the NHS must be exhausted and many are off in isolation too :(
Not sure what to think ?

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 27/12/2021 17:15

I just hope people take a bit of precautions and school won't need to be closed in the new year.

wallypopz · 27/12/2021 17:15

The country cannot afford to continually compensate businesses.

Can they afford not to though? I assume you don't work in the industries impacted?

theemperorhasnoclothes · 27/12/2021 17:17

@rrhuth

Yes, this.

To those saying we 'can't afford it' - if we could get the billions illegally pissed up the wall in money to mates for useless test and trace and PPE contracts I'm sure it would more than cover the costs.

curlymom · 27/12/2021 17:17

Not ideal. Go mixing and evaluate just before schools reopen. Children will be the ones who ultimately suffer for the sake of New Years parties

JanglyBeads · 27/12/2021 17:18

And the adults who die, but yes @curlymom
