Has just been announced by the Health Secretary and reported across BBC etc.
@rrhuth they may have had the same info, but the way it applies to their national situations is different.

NHS capacity and availability of specific treatments will be different in NI to in Cardiff, for example. And different to that in London again. It is reasonable that this should affect decision-making in this matter.
It seems you are very keen to believe the government have wisely considered the evidence and are making what they truly consider is the right decision for the country?

Believe away!

I think that is a crock of shit and Johnson is bothered only about the number of letters getting sent to the 1922 committee.

@PollyIndia

Me and DH can both work easily from home and the DC’s school provided ample live lessons during the last lockdown.

Frankly there’s very few reasons for us to need to leave home, given that we can get supermarket and takeaway deliveries.

Oh well that’s alright then.

thickthighs73 · 27/12/2021 17:54

@Jourdain11

Maybe the overall view from analysts is that further restrictions are not required, or strongly indicating that?
This!
Fairylights25 · 27/12/2021 17:55

I think we have peaked or close to, so no point now - stable door etc. I am glad we can enjoy more days of freedom, and there is no way they are going to close schools not after keeping everything open, so in some ways I am cautiously relieved for the children more than anything.

Just nagging feeling that this is another huge huge gamble....and the law of averages means one will fail at some point.

We are going to a covered party outside, I hope lots of people do the same.

Good for you! Crack on then.

MrsMigginsEggNogShoppe · 27/12/2021 17:55

I don’t understand what’s so hard about people staying at home for a few months to save lives.

I would imagine you are not employed in an industry where people 'just' staying at home for a few months is not going to have a catastrophic affect on your livelihood then? Two years down the line and we have to find a way to navigate this without lockdowns.

Great for all those people who want to go out drinking for New Year. But I want to be sure there will be enough teachers in school to teach my children in January. I'm sick of children being lowest priority of this government. (I daren't even mention the clinically vulnerable on Mumsnet).

I don't trust Johnson and his cronies to get this right.

Kljnmw3459 · 27/12/2021 17:56

I think it's the right decision to not have further restrictions at this point. I'm optimistic things will be much better in January! Appreciate I've been wrong about this every time so far but it was good news that Omicron isn't as strong as the other variants so that will hopefully mean things will soon start looking ok again.

Jourdain11 · 27/12/2021 17:56

Well, ultimately all politicians want to be in power. They should want to be in power. But I don't see it as being so black and white, self interest vs "following the science".

I know people going to large New Years Eve parties. No way are they going to move outside.

And not to mention those of us with mental illness, lockdown was horrific for us and still not recovered
oftenbaffled · 27/12/2021 17:57

@Overthebow

I’m so pleased, such good news. Everyone can enjoy a proper New Years now!
Was always going to no matter what
MaxNormal · 27/12/2021 17:58

Sage and independent sage have both called for a circuit breaker lockdown until March 31st

That would be an utter catastrophe.

And what business is it of yours? Let them enjoy it

Loving that you posted you are both optimistic and have a track record of being wrong Grin

Have to pull you up on the 'Omicron isn't as strong' hope - this doesn;t really help much if it spreads faster as it just takes a few days to get into the same mess...

IcedPurple · 27/12/2021 17:59

Sage and independent sage have both called for a circuit breaker lockdown until March 31st. That would save 30,000 lives but as usual Johnson is prioritising the economy.

"Independent SAGE" are a self-appointed group of disgruntled wanna-be's, so they are irrelelevant.

As for SAGE, there are many members and they don't normally publicly 'call for' certain actions to be taken. Can you link to the above claim?

TheScenicWay · 27/12/2021 17:59

@PinkTree7 Lockdown til March 31st is insane.
Do you realise what the cost to society of this would be? You do realise that not everyone has lovely happy family home lives with loving family members, comfortable homes, space or gadgets for work and education. Do you know how many people are abused or children Who can’t do their work because they have to look after younger siblings?
Avoiding an illness which is mild for most is not the only priority of the government.

Fairylights25 · 27/12/2021 17:59

I did wonder how this will go down with the bars and clubs in Scotland and Wales, the hospitality is on its knees with everything cancelled, and most revellers will simply cross the border for a good night out now so it will do nothing to slow the infection rates down. Additionally just billions being lost that they can ill afford, and NS and MD decisions do look a little knee jerk and controlling in comparison.

RoyalFamilyFan · 27/12/2021 17:59

@thickthighs73 I didnt say I was going to try and stop them. But I will avoid them afterwards.

What is the point of being in power if you are a hostage to a bunch of wackos backbenchers? Johnson is quite clearly not in power.

You just made my point perfectly.

Poetrypatty · 27/12/2021 18:00

Even if London has nearly peaked - and I'm not sure if that's the evidence or not - that wouldn't apply to the rest of the country. That might change after Christmas mixing of course, but adding in NYE is a big gamble isn't it.

What I think Boris Johnson should have done is at least set out a statement with his reasoning. I don't like the whole thing just being up to one untrustworthy man though, I''d prefer cabinet or parliament to decide this, preferably cross party.
