Massive turn in opinion…

Normando91 · 18/12/2021 23:01

Is it just me or has opinion on a possible lockdown or circuit breaker in the coming days or week completely changed in the past 24 hours?

I hadn’t looked at Sky News in the last 2 days as it all just seemed speculation and bleak but having looked tonight it looks inevitable that we’re going to face some kind of stricter restrictions, most likely after Christmas, but possibly before.

Everyone I’ve spoke to has gone from, no we will not go into lockdown (or further restrictions) to yeah, it’s coming.

Who would have thought we’d be back here a year later from lasts Christmases shit show.

OP posts:

Interesting. I wonder how many people would continue to be supportive of circuit breakers/lockdowns if they didn't WFH?

Would they say the same if they worked in hoapitality or ran a restaurant or pub, were self employed, were on a zero hour contract or didn't qualify for furlough or any other financial support?

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 19/12/2021 10:58

I am self employed. And DH is a site engineer, telecoms. We both have to work out of home.

And I am clinically vulnerable.

And we will both lockdown if that is what has to happen. And we will sit tight and keep our fingers crossed that it doesn't break us.

ginnig · 19/12/2021 10:58

Being unvaccinated does not only put yourself at risk of death. It puts others with a variety of illnesses at risk of death too as the NHS can't treat all that need treatment.

I'm fully aware of this but the NHS was struggling before covid & many people wouldn't need so much treatment if they took better care of themselves. I understand that there are mental heath & societal issues that are related to that but that can also be said of some of the vax refusers.

phishy · 19/12/2021 11:00

It is interesting how the people now saying they never followed the rules last Christmas were probably the same Covigilantes who were probably shouting at everyone on MN to wear a mask and isolate.

It just proves that you should ignore Mumsnet or other social media and read the rules on gov.uk and follow your own judgement, as most people are hypocrites.

By 'interesting' do you mean thing you made up?

I doubt it, I thought the furlough scheme was a good decision despite not using it & having to work. I was shocked that it became the new benefit scrounger target.

LakieLady · 19/12/2021 11:01

That's a bummer.

Christmas has already been postponed because of Covid, we were going to do it on 30 December. Now it looks like that might not be possible.

Best I get round and drop presents off beforehand, I reckon, and do a socially distanced handover with the families who are isolating.

VikingOnTheFridge · 19/12/2021 11:01

I do agree most people are hypocrites though.

LindaEllen · 19/12/2021 11:01

The problem is, I'm losing faith in positivity. Through this whole thing everyone has been saying don't jump to the most negative guess about what's going to happen, but then the negative thing happened, or sometimes something even worse. If you look at the threads from early March 2020 people who said there would be a lockdown at all were shot down. Same with people who predicted we wouldn't be able to mix at Christmas. It just feels far too familar.

phishy · 19/12/2021 11:02

Well, no, it’s not made up. So many posts from people saying they never bothered with the rules last year.

No way would they have posted that then.

But you cherish your illusions Viking. Smile

I agree @TameDucksAtChatsworthis a balanced post and I don’t disagree with a lot of what they say.

I think the frustration comes from the fact that most people will have a mild illness if they catch it. It’s easy for people to call others selfish etc, but if they were to swap places with them, their view would likely change too. I mean from both sides.

Millions of people die each day due to malnutrition, including children and young people, yet it’s not even reported. We know it happens but no one (including heads of states from various countries) is up in arms about it, despite it being one of the easiest things to change.

Then you have the lines of the US with a healthy carer system that wasn’t free for all. A one where if you didn’t have insurance you’d be left to die pretty much.

For me, it’s the hypocrisy of all of it

phishy · 19/12/2021 11:04

You’re very defensive Viking, you must have posted similar then 🤣

Starcup · 19/12/2021 11:05

have the likes of the US with a health care system

You have made it up though.
KaycePollard · 19/12/2021 11:06

@Shouldbedoing

It's not a massive turn in opinion, it's a massive increase in infections.
And the recognition (finally!!) that those unvaccinated patients in intensive care beds really do stop others with equally serious life-threatening conditions (stroke, heart attack, cancer) from being treated.

I've expected since early December that we'll have increased restrictions from after Christmas. Preparing for my gym to close, to WFH, to have most shops & restaurants close.

phishy · 19/12/2021 11:08

@VikingOnTheFridge made up what?

ginnig · 19/12/2021 11:08

I didn't follow the rules last Christmas. We had all self isolated leading up to the day & took tests as wanted to make it as safe as it could be & then they said no mixing in London.
However I live in an area of London which has a high % of non londoners if that makes sense. The vast majority of my neighbours packed up & left London that weekend as they normally would. I believe they all went north according to MNs threads at the time 😆
We then decided on the day we would spend it with my parents who live around the corner.

RagzReturnedUnwrapped · 19/12/2021 11:09

@LadyCatStark

That’s the governments plan though, drip feed us information so that we come round to the idea before they announce it.
To be fair, it is effective!
VikingOnTheFridge · 19/12/2021 11:10
@VikingOnTheFridge made up what?
That people saying they won't comply now are the same people who were previously covigilantes. But if I'm wrong and there's more to this than what's in your head, do show us.

ginnig · 19/12/2021 11:11

They have all left again this weekend, one time of the year parking is a dream.

Did you miss that I said they’re probably the same people?

Or have you conveniently missed that out?

Did you post last year that you wouldn’t be following the rules? Be honest now 🤣
User135644 · 19/12/2021 11:17

It was always a danger when this new variant came in at the worst time.

As soon as the mammoth infection figures came in this week then it was inevitable. It's hit London quicker than the first wave and too many aren't vaccinated.

ginnig · 19/12/2021 11:18

I genuinely can't remember, I wouldn't have done so pre event as it was a decision made on xmas morning. I certainly told friends & colleagues, who confessed similar. I'm not a covigilante though!
