Once the infection rates keep breaking all-time highs, it's almost invariable that a lockdown will come. They're just leaving it to the point when people start calling for a lockdown themselves. In Austria the numbers started shooting out of control for about 2 weeks and they faffed around with a half-hearted lockdown for unvaccinated people before pulling the handbrakes and implemented full lockdown.

Of course you can choose not to "comply" but the restaurants, shops and attractions are still going to closed. There's really not that many rules to break. Triple vaxxed people did sometimes meet each other indoors this time round but it's hardly the kill your granny situation from the March 2020 lockdown.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 18/12/2021 13:45

I love it when people say that they’ll just ignore another lockdown.

I’m happy to send you photos of our chronically sick, fully vaccinated, CEV friend who is in critical care right now, on continuous oxygen, with debate going on if he’ll be fit enough to leave for Christmas, or if ICU is the best next step in his treatment.

He’s late 40s, good fitness & clean diet, non smoker, caught Covid whilst at work, just born with a dodgy ticker.

But it’s ok, you just go on being bloody minded idiots.

Our friend has been in hospital for a week so far. That’s a week that someone could be using that bed for anything other than covid. But someone happened to walk into his work for a meeting, refused to masks because ‘it’s my right not to!’ And boom. Another NHS bed filled.

This pandemic has taught me a couple of things.

  1. That some people are so obsessed with themselves & their ‘rights’ (or more likely wants not needs or rights) that they are happy to steamroll over the needs of other folk to get what they want;

  2. That there are many, many fewer folk that are working their cojones off to ensure that we all keep safe, fed and healthy, and they’re at breaking point right now with the attitude of the first group;

  3. That critical thinking & following the science is an anathema to a large proportion of the public, who would rather bitch about, “Well, Boris told us that we wouldn’t need restrictions anymore!” rather than “Oh blimey, there’s a new more transmissible variant, how can we help protect ourselves and others?”.

Look, no one wants to lockdown. Everyone wants the freedom of 2 years ago. But the playing field has changed; this is a pandemic with not only the potential to kill, it can overwhelm our (underfunded & less in patient beds due to Tory policy) NHS.

That is the sad reality.

Now, who wants to see my friend’s selfies with all the tubes & wires?

AmIAGrinchx · 18/12/2021 13:45

@Starcup

They should lockdown antivaxer adults! Make it illegal for then to go out socialising, instead of the rest of us!!
That makes zero sense because vaccinated people can spread it just as much and die as well. Hmm
gettingolderandgrumpy · 18/12/2021 13:46

@TheKeatingFive

That’s why he needs to go and now !!!

People need to be careful what they wish for. His successor would almost certainly be more to the right, not less.

oh please you think it’s fine to follow rules by someone who sets them and breaks them repeatedly and keep their job? .

I can, in return, share a story of someone I know who lost her business, home, suffered desperately being isolated living on her own and tried to commit suicide last winter. Lockdown has enormous costs also.

Cheetosyummy · 18/12/2021 13:49

On Sky the Westminster presenter just said that extremely unlikely this to happened, that it’s only plain rumours and no more.
He said that Boris declined today any talks about lockdown..

TheKeatingFive · 18/12/2021 13:51

I'm not getting into the morality of anything, I'm saying if you get rid of Boris chances are the party will lurch further to the right. And what are the consequences of that?

TheKeatingFive · 18/12/2021 13:52

The suggestion seems to be socialisation mostly, ie indoor homes

Which would be impossible to police so what's the point?

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 18/12/2021 13:52

@CentrifugalBumblePuppy
Sorry about your friend , we all have friends and relatives we are worried for , including myself
But I don't expect the rest of the country to sacrifice their lives

CupcakeTowers · 18/12/2021 13:52

@TokyoSushi

I suppose its all well and good saying 'I'm not doing it' 'I won't be complying' but if things are shut, what choice do you have? You can't go to a closed pub or shop. Of course you can do what you like in your own home, but you'll be forced not to do some things, simply by them just not being available.
Exactly this! Austria just had a 2 week circuit breaker and it wasn't that bad to be honest (from a purely private perspective. It was obviously shit for businesses). People just did more things outdoors, using the parks and places that were open. There were plenty of takeout options. Some restaurants were even kind enough to leave their loos open in locations near sledding hills/parks so children could spend more time there. Some Christmas markets left their lights on so there was far more festive feeling than the lockdown from last year. Schools and nurseries were also open throughout.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/12/2021 13:52

Looking at the number in government who've been caught out - and that's just the ones we know about - I suspect the problem would be finding someone who didn't

I'd send you a recent selfie of my colleague who suffers from depression in return, shall I? Oh no, I can't. Because he killed himself during the Welsh firebreak last year.

There are no options that lead to an optimal outcome for everyone, and the sooner we recognise that the better. While your friend's situation is sad, it doesn't by itself prove that we should re-instate restrictions. Any more than my colleague's suicide proves we should not.

@Cheetosyummy

This is exactly the kind of reporting that is keeping us in a state of anxiety and fear.
Dontforgetyourbrolly · 18/12/2021 13:55

It's not just the general public unwilling to comply anymore
I know 2 employers telling their staff not to test and not to isolate
Including a private facility for young adults with mental health problems ( severe ) they need staff at work not at home because they may or may not have covid

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 13:55

We all were pretty much compliant last year because hardly anyone had the new vaccines and it all made sense to not see people and stay in the bubbles. Delta was raging and I think that the majority of people were genuinely scared to be honest. Plus they shut nearly everything down and we had the tier system before that as well.
This year they just aren't , maybe about going out to restaurants or pubs, but not meeting indoors. It's more a case of ' I don't want a cold or flu over the holidays' , even if it's only mild , not to mention staying indoors for ten days too.
Which would scupper so many plans for Christmas.
So , we now have the arguing about what to do for the NHS. It's going to be a hard sell for a circuit breaker , I think that much !

JuergenSchwarzwald · 18/12/2021 13:56

@echt

So not the Guardian or the Times.

Nice one, OP.

? I read this in the Times this morning.

Totally agree.

Firstly I hope your friend pulls through and makes a full recovery.

It’s exhausting how relentless and self obsessed these folks are, it’s quite dangerous how they can actively disrupt threads with their tiresome selfish ideologies.

MN is rife with it at the moment which must mean certain organisations and bodies are desperate to sway public perception away from prioritising lives and health over ‘freedoms’.

whynotwhatknot · 18/12/2021 14:03

feel sorry for hpositalty saying it will be outdoors only that wont help them in the middle of winter-therefore no furlough or help for them because its not technically a lockdown

what a shitshow

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 14:05

Yes, I feel so sorry for the hospitality industry too :(

Wishful thinking on your part I’d say.

You feel like you are in the minority because you are. You are on the extreme end of wanting to be in lockdown for a long time and you are blind to the harms they bring.

I don’t know why because they are so obvious to nearly everyone else

TheKeatingFive · 18/12/2021 14:08

Wishful thinking on your part I’d say.

I always find the 'everyone who disagrees with me is a bot' an extraordinary line of thinking.

How self centred to you have to be to conclude that?

And I can show you countless photos of people with my condition who don't even get treatment on the nhs. We're left to detoriate and either die, risk a stroke, paralysis or end things ourselves. But nobody is talking about cranio cervical instability. There's more things than covid. My uncle died after his Oxford vaccine. I know people including myself who are still suffering from their vaccines. We are made out to be anti vaxxers and mad, which is not the case. It's seeing things from all points of view. The nhs being overrun is awful, but it should have been addressed before covid. If you had limited years left you might want to live your life to the full and not waste those precious years locked down either. I hope your friend recovers btw as I feel for anyone who is suffering. I'm just explaining why some people will not follow rules anymore.
the80sweregreat · 18/12/2021 14:08

A few pubs near us have outdoor seating under a giant bubble or big gazebos , with patio heaters on it could work for a few sittings.
Not ideal and the staff still need to go indoors of course.
