... I just think he is amazing and so straight talking. He knows his stuff and seems down to earth. I love the way he handles the questions from the press and concentrates on the task in hand.

@Soybean31

He's been the calm and considered voice of reason throughout the pandemic. Absolute legend Smile
This^

& this from @LuluBlakey1

Me too. I think he is a totally decent, totally committed, highly astute, honest person who leads by example and does a fantastic job. The contrast between him and Boris could not be more stark

I wish he was making the decisions!! Not scruff chops & the vanished!

ravenmum · 15/12/2021 19:26

Why specifically choose to compare Lewis Hamilton an F1 racing driver with Chris Whitty a scientist?
I should think Lewis Hamilto came to mind as an example of someone who's been knighted, because he was knighted today. The poster was saying that CW should be knighted, a scientist - rather than someone who's effectively an entertainer.

awesomekilick · 15/12/2021 19:26

@RB68

such a beautiful soul, so much good, so much kindness and so much common bloody sense and good old fashioned real scientific knowledge. I hope he does get recognition for his contribution in some way - not sure it would ever be enough. He will go down in history
Hear hear.
blameless · 15/12/2021 19:26

I've enjoyed a few of his lectures on disease. He takes such pains to ensure that he has given sufficient context for the message that he is delivering that he'll never have a slick soundbite, but his words are carefully chosen and he will never have cause to contradict something he has previously said.

An honest and honourable man - if only more people in public life shared similar qualities.

SueSaid · 15/12/2021 19:26

He seems such a nice man. So understated, didn't make a fuss when he was trolled and attacked in public. He just gets the tone right, manages to get across the seriousness of the situation without scaremongering.

JVT irritates me sometimes with his constant analogies but I could listen to Whitty all day long.

MamDancer · 15/12/2021 19:27

[quote RoseAndRose]I know this is mildly off-topic, but I'm guessing a fair number of posters here also appreciate Prof Van Tam

And in case you hadn't spotted it, he's doing the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures this year

Bookmarked! thank you!

Lindy2 · 15/12/2021 19:27

I trust him and Van Tam. He is so calm and clear - although I don't think I've heard him talk quite so starkly as he did at the press conference today.

I imagine he won't take a knighthood right now for doing his job and while we are still in the throes of the pandemic. I hope he accepts recognition for everything he's done at some point in the future though. He deserves some thanks.

girlmom21 · 15/12/2021 19:28

More everyday racism. What on earth does one have to do with the other? Why specifically choose to compare Lewis Hamilton an F1 racing driver with Chris Whitty a scientist?

How is it racist? Hamilton got knighted today (or yesterday). That's why people are making the comparison.

CaMePlaitPas · 15/12/2021 19:31

Yes, that's because he's professional and an expert in his field. Unlike that dishevelled lunatic he stands next to.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2021 19:31

I think Chris Whitty is great, I also think Lewis Hamilton is deserving of his Knighthood due to his achievements.

HappyMeal564 · 15/12/2021 19:32

I love him. He's really impressive and just does his job. Knight him!

Wilkolampshade · 15/12/2021 19:32

My DD says he looks like he keeps bodies in the freezer.
Can think of one I'd like him to stuff in there.

seconddayout · 15/12/2021 19:33

Chris Whitty has the patience of a saint. I could not do as he does and work with the worst Prime Minister ever, who I consider through his neglect and delay especially in March and October 2020 to have caused more harm than Harold Shipman.

Unsure33 · 15/12/2021 19:34

A prime minister does not get a job on the basis of being an expert on a pandemic 🙄

LetHimHaveIt · 15/12/2021 19:35

He's one of the ever-diminishing number of Britons who reassure me that there's some world-class intellect left in this country, and we're not completely going to the dogs . . .

PurpleDaisies · 15/12/2021 19:35

@Sparklingbrook

I think Chris Whitty is great, I also think Lewis Hamilton is deserving of his Knighthood due to his achievements.
I agree. I don’t want any Lewis bashing here!
MarineBlue33 · 15/12/2021 19:35

@the80sweregreat You are out of order to compare people from two different fields. Sir Lewis Hamilton has achieved more than any other British racing driver and has not had it easy due to his race.
Chris Whitty is amazing in his field.

SueSaid · 15/12/2021 19:37

@Wilkolampshade

My DD says he looks like he keeps bodies in the freezer. Can think of one I'd like him to stuff in there.
It's awful when people make comments like this. He isn't weird just clearly a very clever man who probably couldn't care less what he looks like.

Didn't Bob Geldof make disparaging comments about his appearance? as if that stupid mouthy twat is in any position to criticise an eminent Professor.

ForsythiaInBloom · 15/12/2021 19:37

Take me down to Professor Chris Whitty
Where the jabs are given
And the charts ain’t pretty
Oh won’t you please stay at hooooommmme!

SueSaid · 15/12/2021 19:39

I'm surprised knighthoods still are a thing. Kneeling before a privileged man to have a title bestowed on one would seen a bit last century.

Mumsnut · 15/12/2021 19:39

I like to think Her Maj is going to bypass a knighthood altogether and go straight for 'Lord Chris'.

Maybe we could get up a petition ...

EtInTerraPax · 15/12/2021 19:40

He seems like a thoroughly decent person, and so committed to his work. I really like him, and hope he can have a little time off and peace and quiet over the Christmas period but doubt that is likely.
He'd be welcome here for supper any day of the week (COVID restrictions allowing!).
I think he'd be a very interesting guest

emuloc · 15/12/2021 19:40

@Sparklingbrook

I think Chris Whitty is great, I also think Lewis Hamilton is deserving of his Knighthood due to his achievements.
This. Lewis Hamilton has worked hard for what he has achieved.
RampantIvy · 15/12/2021 19:41

@Soybean31

He's been the calm and considered voice of reason throughout the pandemic. Absolute legend Smile
I wholeheartedly agree.
Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2021 19:41

Apparently Sir Bob Geldof said CW looked like 'something from the fifties'. Which is odd because Sir Bob is something from the 50s himself...
