... I just think he is amazing and so straight talking. He knows his stuff and seems down to earth. I love the way he handles the questions from the press and concentrates on the task in hand.

Agree

Teenagetrouble · 15/12/2021 19:01

I think he’s incredible - such clear explanations of complex information.

Sittingonabench · 15/12/2021 19:02

I really hope he has been offered a knighthood and has turned it down. I also hope they continue to offer it to him year on year even if he never accepts it. The qualities he embodies are what society should admire and aim for.
I agree that someone in his position should be clever and know their stuff but he has stepped up to the plate with calm and perseverance and while Downing Street we’re having Christmas parties he was in hospitals doing his part at Christmas.

itsgettingwierd · 15/12/2021 19:03

@DoubleHelix79

I've worked with him a few times. He is incredibly smart, committed and only speaks when he genuinely has something to say. I wish there were many more people like him.
I'm glad to hear this as this is the image I have of him.

Someone who doesn't speak for the sake of it but when he does you hang off his every word.

He comes across so honest and sincere. I loved his out down to the test that accounted him at the street stall a few months ago.

BungleandGeorge · 15/12/2021 19:03

He’s a good public speaker, in direct contrast to the PM!

Lampzade · 15/12/2021 19:03

He comes across as a gentleman. You don’t get many of those around these days

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 15/12/2021 19:05

@SummerHouse

I remember when he explained that you can't take personal risk. You take risks on behalf of everyone. It was not patronising, it was not scaremongering, it was sincere, it was profound. Good man indeed. He can't do adverts though.
Welcome to the whole of social life. Groan.
Notsomerryandbright · 15/12/2021 19:09

100%. He's seems like a such a calm, measured person mixed with smarts and good intentions. I really hope he is rewarded for his consistency throughout the pandemic.

itsacat · 15/12/2021 19:09

@rubyglitter

There’s something about him that creeps me out. I can’t quite put my finger on it. I think it’s his blank stare.
@rubyglitter just the two of us who are in agreement on this thread…
SloeFox · 15/12/2021 19:10

I love him as well. He has the knack of making things clear and not talking down or patronising. I like his manner very much. I feel like if you had his respect you would feel very honoured.

LondonLovie · 15/12/2021 19:14

He is also incredibly resilient. Super human resiliences

Hopeisnotastrategy · 15/12/2021 19:15

Decency, intelligence and honesty just shine through. We are incredibly lucky to have him, and I wish him and his dear ones a very happy Christmas. 🎄

Giggorata · 15/12/2021 19:15

I only bother to listen to the conferences when he is there. No flannel, well presented information with a wealth of knowledge and expertise behind it. I think he is brilliant and deserves a knighthood.

Littlecaf · 15/12/2021 19:16

I suspect he turned down his knighthood until he’s retired.

RoseAndRose · 15/12/2021 19:16

I know this is mildly off-topic, but I'm guessing a fair number of posters here also appreciate Prof Van Tam

And in case you hadn't spotted it, he's doing the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures this year

nowahousewife · 15/12/2021 19:16

When he answered Preston’s question sp perfectly I said to DH “why can’t he be our PM?”
“Because he has no ego” DH replied.

ancientgran · 15/12/2021 19:18

@Iamnotamermaid

Why did they not give this man a knighthood, he definitely deserves it, and instead bestow it on that tax dodging, prima donna Lewis Hamilton who does not even live in this country.
I don't know much about him, not a car racing fan, but I thought he was gracious in the race he lost last week. I know there was some controversy, which went over my head, but he didn't whine or create but congratulated the other guy and thanked his team.

Obviously Chris Witty is doing a very important job but personally I like JVTs style more, not that I don't like Chris Witty I hasten to add.

TigerKat · 15/12/2021 19:18

I love Chris Whitty- he comes across as very intelligent and sincere and I could listen to him talk for ages as I find his voice very calming. In total contrast to the PM!

TeenMinusTests · 15/12/2021 19:18

I think he'll get his knighthood when the pandemic is over.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2021 19:18

Me too op

He’s brilliant at speaking in a measured and precise way

TooWicked · 15/12/2021 19:21

I only bother tuning into any of the conferences if I know he’s on.

The poor guy looks like he has aged about 20 years since this all started.

BonneMaman15 · 15/12/2021 19:21

I read a lot around CoVid, the risks etc, but he can explain something that multiple people take pages and pages to discuss, so precisely in two sentences with so much clarity.

yomommasmomma · 15/12/2021 19:22

@the80sweregreat

Not a sir, unlike that diva very rich man ,Lewis Hamilton :(
More everyday racism. What on earth does one have to do with the other? Why specifically choose to compare Lewis Hamilton an F1 racing driver with Chris Whitty a scientist?
DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/12/2021 19:24

He is totally brilliant. My family member works closely with him and said he’s a really great person. Very funny as well.

To the PP who said last year he spent Christmas in a ward. Yes, that’s right, he works in a London hospital on shifts. In normal times, pandemic times. He works in an infectious disease department. That’s his job as well as being CMO.

We have a lot of love here for CW.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/12/2021 19:24

I have such a lot of respect for Chris Whitty and Jonathan Van Tam. Such a contrast to Johnson's waffle and lies. They both deserve awards when this is over.
