... I just think he is amazing and so straight talking. He knows his stuff and seems down to earth. I love the way he handles the questions from the press and concentrates on the task in hand.

I don’t agree with him backing boris and I don’t agree we know his views.

His job is to advise on presented data using his knowledge and experience. That’s what he does. The rule making, the actual decisions are not his to make. All he is interested in is the presented health & hospital data, hes not advising on economic impacts or any other issues with the pandemic because it’s not his port of knowledge.

He never defends nor criticised the government. Just sticks to his job, the last thing we need is someone either up boris’S arse or criticising him. He just gets on with his role.

Mummytotwonow · 16/12/2021 09:48

@EvilPea totally agree!

"The chief medical officer is the country’s most senior medical adviser, providing advice to the secretary of state for health and, when necessary, the prime minister. The CMO is also the head of the public health profession and represents it within government. The role has three overarching responsibilities: to provide independent advice on public health issues, in particular during public health emergencies; to recommend policy changes to improve public health outcomes; and to act as an interface between the government and medical researchers and clinical professionals. The CMO plays a prominent role in supporting the government’s response to public health emergencies. Alongside ministers, the CMO is responsible for keeping the public informed on health issues of high public concern and explaining the government’s response" (Institute for Government)

A key thing is "explaining the governments response" a response (many) of his supporters have said is terrible... yet he goes along with it.

and yes i do watch the many briefings he is on, of course he is a difficult position, i get that, if he was to publicly criticise BJ, he'd be out of a job or sidelined, which of course means his role is not impartial.
I'll be watching him in front of the commons H&S committee today, will you?

EvilPea · 16/12/2021 11:01

A lot of his advice is stronger than the governments guidance. He suggested wearing masks in busy places, avoiding seeing too many people, distancing etc. His advice is clear and concise. It’s not for him to lay down the law. But if people listened to what he says they would hear a stronger response than the governments, he doesn’t need to weigh up the economy, education or anything else in his advice. So he tows the governments guidance and encourages people to go further if they can.

I do believe the governments response has been woeful, but actually if they’d locked down earlier some would moan. If they’d let the virus rip people would moan. They’d have never got it right for all the people all the time.

Ohh I didn’t know he was on tv later. I’ll be watching with my I love whitty t shirt and big banner behind me. So thanks for the heads up

WoodenReindeer · 16/12/2021 11:04

Ooh how do we watch him speak to the commons?

Id be really interested how he presents to them as opposed to tempering for the public.

AnyFucker · 16/12/2021 11:06

He has been talking for some time now, completely unscripted of course, on BBC2

SergeiL · 16/12/2021 11:06

He’s on now. So clever.

AnyFucker · 16/12/2021 11:10

Impressive man. So very articulate. I am curious as to how much he is able to do re. the rest of his job.

As CMO, I assume his brief will be very wide on all matters to do with health in the UK. For the last 2 years or so he seems to have been Professor Covid (only)

WoodenReindeer · 16/12/2021 11:18

Ooh thankyou. Will put the tv on.

AnyFucker · 16/12/2021 11:19

He’s still at it Smile

Octavia174 · 16/12/2021 11:19

@EvilPea You fill ya boots! glad to give you the heads up :)

TrueGrit54 · 16/12/2021 11:23

I admire him.

Sensible advice to whitty. Prioritise what’s important.
Sack off the office Christmas party if you want to protect your granny.
Or go to the Christmas party if your having a quiet Christmas without vulnerable people.

WoodenReindeer · 16/12/2021 12:02

Really clear and excellent that Witty doesnt get drawn into side issues vut makes his point so clearly.

Amazing he's just answering on the hoof like this and so clear. Amazing.

awaynboilyurheid · 16/12/2021 15:26

@MondayYogurt

I might send him a Christmas card.
Brilliant idea! wish we could!
MondayYogurt · 16/12/2021 16:20

@awaynboilyurheid sadly with all the death threats and nutters I doubt physical mail would get through, but perhaps a Christmas card tweet would be fine.

CatherineCawood · 16/12/2021 16:28

@squashyhat

I assume he has been offered a knighthood and turned it down.
As I watched Lewis Hamilton be knighted I did wonder why he wasn't receiving one and it occurred to me that he maybe said no.

I wonder if he thought he should wait until the pandemic was over.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/12/2021 17:00

Le fl up, whitty fan girl 5.0 as he puts this MP oh so politely back in his box

“This is sometimes said by people who have no understanding of health at all…..and when they say it it’s usually because they want to make a political point” Grin

He is getting murdered by the Tory right wing loons!

So perhaps i wont be so harsh on him, he is between a rock an a hard place by the looks of it.

I must admit, i first heard of him with his work on the Ebola crisis in West Africa and he was very good on that, completely out of the public eye though and no dickhead PM to placate.

WoodenReindeer · 16/12/2021 17:08

The eyeballs that was a perfect reply wasn't it!

I loved that he wasn't drawn on political points either "that's not a doctor question."

I felt more reassured listening to him !

Guacamole001 · 16/12/2021 17:25

Somebody needs to buy the poor man a nice wig for Ch ristmas.

Vinomummyinlockdown · 16/12/2021 17:30

🤣🤣🤣🤪🤪🤪🤪🤮

ravenmum · 16/12/2021 17:31

If he wanted to wear a wig I'm pretty sure he'd be savvy enough to get his own.

jassixa · 16/12/2021 17:38
