Independent sage: circuit breaker lockdown needed now

XmasGoose · 15/12/2021 18:01

I see Independent Sage have said that an immediate circuit breaker lockdown is needed to protect the NHS.

This would involve a total ban on household mixing, all bars, restaurants and indoor venues closing and schools shutting early for Christmas.

Is this needed now to protect the NHS and save lives? Personally I wouldn’t comply with another lockdown.
Do any of you understand the situation?

Have you watched the interview with Nabarro?

If this is as bad as they fear, in a couple of weeks there are going to be too many people ill and needing hospital treatment than can be managed.

So the vaccines are utterly pointless then? Why are we all on to our boosters? What was the fucking point?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/12/2021 20:25
@Waxonwaxoff0 really? Not the case where I am at all, it’s quite the opposite.

Plenty of local restaurants have lost an awful lot of Christmas bookings already which will be absolutely savage to struggling businesses who historically rely on this time of year pre Covid World. Without furlough support they’re bound for bankruptcy once Omicron takes hold.
Unfortunately there's no guarantee of furlough any more either. I don't think Rishi wants to pay out any more.

HesterShaw1 · 15/12/2021 20:25
@HesterShaw1It has struggled in the past, and if you care to read up on it. It suffers massively from underfunding too.

DP is German and in 2019 his father had a triple bypass very soon after seeing his doctor. It saved his life.

Yes anecdotes aren't statistics etc etc.

GoldenOmber · 15/12/2021 20:26

There's only the vaccine and no other medicine to help??

Not true, there’s a number of medicines used at the moment and more in development.

Againstmachine · 15/12/2021 20:26

Have you watched the interview with Nabarro?

Ah the WHO who made a complete mess up of this from day one.

TheVampiresWife · 15/12/2021 20:27

@NannaMcPhoo

aaaaaaaaaand fuck off
Grin

Indeed.

Could you let me know that they are?
AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 15/12/2021 20:28

@OnceuponaRainbow18

Circuit breaker during Xmas holiday does sound like an ok compromise
Not many people would agree to not see their family over Christmas. And unless they properly furlough, there isn't going to be much festive cheer.
worriedatthemoment · 15/12/2021 20:28

If this was going to happen it should of been a week or so ago for 2 weeks then xmas allowed with some restrictions in jan

flashy44 · 15/12/2021 20:29

Sage can do one,im not changing my plans

Bit selective of you. He also said this:

David Nabarro, World Health Organization special envoy for covid-19, has separately appealed to government leaders: “Stop using lockdowns as a primary means of controlling the virus. Develop better systems for doing it.” Speaking in an interview with Spectator magazine he said, “The only way that lockdowns are justified is to buy you time to reorganise, regroup, rebalance your resources and protect your healthcare workers".

worriedatthemoment · 15/12/2021 20:30

Also if you shut down businesses you have to pay staff and owners people can't live off air

Trixiefirecracker · 15/12/2021 20:31

@HesterShaw1 the NHS saved my life and my mothers. What’s your point? Did you read the article. Yes, the NHS is not perfect by far, it’s been chronically underfunded and systematically taken apart by the Tories. However I have lived many places where this kind of health care does not exist and can tell you honestly I know what I would rather have but most people on MN are fairly wealthy and privileged so know they can afford the alternative.

worriedatthemoment · 15/12/2021 20:31

@DynamiteFilledRadish funny how people only report the bits they want , also didn't WHO complain at us when we put countries on the red list just a few days or week ago or so

GoldenOmber · 15/12/2021 20:33

Could you let me know that they are?

Here’s a pile of them: www.sps.nhs.uk/articles/summary-of-covid-19-medicines-guidance-critical-care/

Plus the new antivirals and monoclonal antibodies that I believe were just starting to roll out now? Molnupiravir and Ronapreve iirc.

BluebellsGreenbells · 15/12/2021 20:36

I love the ‘I’m not changing my plans brigade’

People here were locked up, fined and had criminal records for breaking Covid laws.

If there’s a chance of either I think you’d comply.

I'm not sure that's something to sound so pleased about Confused
santabetterwashhishands · 15/12/2021 20:39

The lockdown will come after Christmas. No way will they stop the Christmas trade for pubs and shops.
But I won't comply anymore I will use my common sense and avoid busy places as I have done for the last two years.

ohreallynotreally · 15/12/2021 20:42

@Againstmachine

People saying that any potential lockdown will be ignored because of our incompetent government and pm please spare a thought for people working in the health care sector !

The majority of people have took their vaccines and what was asked in past, this was our way out of it we were told.

We can't lockdown because the NHS is overwhelmed as why weren't we doing it before covid, and it will be massively damaged to society.

It’s not just the NHS it is all the people who look after the ill or vulnerable in many sectors….we are human beings who have a limit to what we can do ! We are not responsible for the poor management but are expected to pick up the pieces! So just be thoughtful for the human beings…who have families, vulnerable neighbours…and yes I do understand that MH is very important .The people I know with massive anxiety are my own children and colleagues. My children witnessed me very unwell last Christmas with Covid…be thoughtful of the fact that I personally have absolutely no control about the decisions made from our crappy Government!!
IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 15/12/2021 20:43

Those of you who are saying "Nope" to Independent Sage's plan to reduce transmission and still have a normal Christmas...

What would you do instead of a circuit breaker to reduce transmission and stave off the next lockdown?

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2021 20:44

For how long? And then when you lift it same scenario again

Beeinmybonnets · 15/12/2021 20:44

Independent Sage are fantastic. They are scientists, telling us what is going to happen, based on research, not based on made-up social media nonsense or Boris-politics. We might not want to hear it, but we should, if we want an even minimally functioning healthcare service this winter and to keep the elderly & vulnerable alive. We are too old to be having tantrums when we hear news we don't like the sound of.

HesterShaw1 · 15/12/2021 20:46

A lockdown to deal with the effects of prior lockdowns to avert another lockdown?

Yes why not? Sounds rather fun Hmm

(to misquote General Melchitt)

Can people not see how mad this is?

VikingOnTheFridge · 15/12/2021 20:46

@BluebellsGreenbells

But the lockdowns will happen by proxy anyway. When whole business needs to close or class groups because there’s no teachers etc -

If it gets much worse so many people will work from home so there’s the lunch trade etc, people are already pulling out of parties., so restaurants and clubs will close as no trade.

It’s not clear cut one or the other.

There is no chance of a lockdown by proxy happening over Christmas. The numbers of people desperate to get one with family are far too high for that, and some of the people voluntarily restricting their activities now are doing it specifically so they don't have covid over Christmas. We are very clearly not in a lockdown by proxy situation at present. For the same reason, an official lockdown attempt would fail.

It's not a great shock that Indy Sage have failed to recognise this, what with them being a jumped up joke, but it's a fact nonetheless.
