Independent sage: circuit breaker lockdown needed now

551 replies

XmasGoose · 15/12/2021 18:01

I see Independent Sage have said that an immediate circuit breaker lockdown is needed to protect the NHS.

This would involve a total ban on household mixing, all bars, restaurants and indoor venues closing and schools shutting early for Christmas.

Is this needed now to protect the NHS and save lives? Personally I wouldn’t comply with another lockdown.

@XmasGoose

The thing with independent sag is I suspect we’d have been in lockdown for 2 years if it was up to them.

They opposed reopening in July 2020, called for a lockdown in October 2020, called for the January 2021 lockdown to be harsher, opposed reopening in July and called for a lockdown in September

Lockdown in October 20 was right call

Some continued measures including mitigations, air filters etc in school, masks from Jul 21- right call

whynotwhatknot · 15/12/2021 20:11

no i wont be following any ban on households mixing not this time

Overthebow · 15/12/2021 20:12

Hahaha do they really think people would listen? I certainly wouldn’t. We need to get on with our lives with no more lockdown. Anyone worried can voluntarily stop seeing others but I’m most definitely not going to.

milly74 · 15/12/2021 20:12

we will not comply
Enoigh now of the scaremongering

HesterShaw1 · 15/12/2021 20:13

@Zotter

It’s not just NHS threatened but many countries health systems:

WHO special envoy Dr Nabarro’s exact words:

“We're concerned that people are dismissing Omicron as mild. Even if it is less severe, the sheer number of cases will overwhelm health systems."

"Wear facemasks. Maintain physical distance. Keep windows open. Practice superb hygiene."

Fine. None of those things are:

Shut schools
Don't see family and friends
Shut down everything that people rely on

GoldenOmber · 15/12/2021 20:15

Well circuit breakers never work, and Independent Sage never wanted any other previous lockdown to end when it did.

Other than that, though, totally plausible plan from them there.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/12/2021 20:15

@Thewiseoneincognito

If You think a circuit breaker lockdown is bad- think about the utter devastation to an unsupported leisure industry where pubs clubs and restaurants are haemorrhaging money and end up bankrupt because people choose to stay away voluntarily, which is happening now.

That will be much worse than a furlough supported closure, the job losses will be off the charts. Good luck going out then…

Most people choosing to stay away voluntarily are people who normally don't go to those places anyway. Plenty of young people still in the pubs that I've seen.

Feel quite worried after watching Nabarro on Sky News talking about the unprecedented situation we are in😒

NannaMcPhoo · 15/12/2021 20:17

aaaaaaaaaand fuck off

HesterShaw1 · 15/12/2021 20:18
@HesterShaw1 I am being very lazy for just agreeing with you, rather than fighting this constructively, but am dealing with a DC (young adult) with MH problems caused by lockdowns so a bit frazzled. But you really are spot on.
Thank @celan. I'm glad someone says so. I'm so sorry to hear what you're dealing with. Unfortunately you're very far from alone :(

Overthebow · 15/12/2021 20:20

Honestly don’t care anymore. They have no right to control it or tell us who we can or can’t see anymore and the damage to people’s mental health and children’s development is too high. With the majority unlikely to follow another lockdown, and the cost to wellbeing, people’s livelihoods and the economy, there’s just no point in doing it.

doublemonkey · 15/12/2021 20:20

@Waxonwaxoff0

Independent Sage can get fucked.
Yep. Couldn't have said it better.

I disagree. I know lots of people now avoiding Christmas parties because they don’t want Covid for Christmas.

I’ve had Covid and happy to go out, teens are double jabbed. I’d rather they had Covid whilst fully protected than have their immunity weaken and Covid more severely.

They will be out but teens don’t spend much money!!

Trixiefirecracker · 15/12/2021 20:20

@GoldenOmber where is your evidence for this? Just been reading about circuit breakers deployed in other countries and there seems to be evidence that they do. You stop socialising, you will cut down on transmissions. Depends what you mean by ‘work’! They will have some effect though.

motheroftigers · 15/12/2021 20:20

Independent sage can fuck right off. We will never be out of this horrific loop if we listened to them. No way will I be obeying ANY lockdowns. I am double jabbed, about to have my booster - they can fuck off.

We have have to get on with life.

I agree, my friends pub had 40 cancellations in one day after the announcement.

This has got to stop

HesterShaw1 · 15/12/2021 20:21

@BarmyBrunhilde

Quite shocked that some people seem to toss off 'mixing households' as though it were some highly entitled luxury people were demanding. People need people. Human contact is like breathing - people have been without the loved ones for far too long over the last 2 years.

The idea that people can get manage their emotional wellbeing through zoom and rainy socially distanced walks is just not realistic in the long term (and after 2 years we are talking very much long term!)

Absolutely this and it gave me the rage right from the start. This horrible sneery attitude that people who were lonely and who needed other people were emotional weaklings with no backbone who would have crumbled during the war 🙄
WashWam · 15/12/2021 20:22

Do any of you understand the situation?

Have you watched the interview with Nabarro?

If this is as bad as they fear, in a couple of weeks there are going to be too many people ill and needing hospital treatment than can be managed.

Yes that's true, but I think that's specifically because they don't want Covid for Christmas. If it was any other time of year I bet they'd still be going out.
motheroftigers · 15/12/2021 20:22

And anyone that advocates this can fuck right off too. I am more than happy for them to go in to a self imposed 'circuit break/lockdown' - crack on.

NynaeveSedai · 15/12/2021 20:23

No I won't be locking down thanks
Not when the numbers of people dying daily is still under 200.
And no I don't think those people are disposable but it's a pandemic. People die. It's shit. But it cannot be prevented.

Thewiseoneincognito · 15/12/2021 20:24

@Waxonwaxoff0 really? Not the case where I am at all, it’s quite the opposite.

Plenty of local restaurants have lost an awful lot of Christmas bookings already which will be absolutely savage to struggling businesses who historically rely on this time of year pre Covid World. Without furlough support they’re bound for bankruptcy once Omicron takes hold.

GoldenOmber · 15/12/2021 20:24

where is your evidence for this? Just been reading about circuit breakers deployed in other countries and there seems to be evidence that they do.

Last year, here in the UK?
England autumn 4-week lockdown.
Wales 2-week autumn lockdown.
Both ended up lifting then going right back into lockdown over winter.
Scotland had a 16-day lockdown in the same period. It ended up lasting 6 months.

I thought they might be worth a shot before we tried them. I do not think so now we’ve tried them and they didn’t work.
