As stated in thread title if we stay in Plan B according to government scientists.

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/11/omicron-covid-variant-could-cause-75000-deaths-in-england-by-end-of-april-say-scientists

Does anyone recall how many died in the wave last winter to compare?

Lucked

I clicked through links on the bbc until I got the actual paper (not yet peer reviewed) which does state that current projections are based on omicron being the same severity as delta. Current data isn’t clear yet but it may well not be.

Obviously when you haven’t the data assumptions do need to be made but the media has taken the projections and run with with as being almost a certainty which isn’t the case.

It’s absolutely possible omicron will be milder and if so the authors stated the study will be updated. I would set far more in store by that projection in a few weeks time as we will have actual data to feed into it.

They don't piss around in Israel.

Prime minister Bennett in Israel 'I ask all parents now: protect the children of Israel - no need to make an appointment - GO STRAIGHT TO THE VACCINATION CENTER "

What worries me is we do piss around here Sad

I am sure I read something about people presenting to Emergency Rioms with Omicron so that to me suggests some are very ill with it.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 13/12/2021 06:57

Sorry Emergency Dept.
Speaking to the BBC, Susan Hopkins, the chief medical adviser of the UKHealthSecurity Agency, said hospitals were diagnosing Omicron in an increasing number of people coming into emergency departments and that the numbers in hospital were expected to increase

Whattochoosenow · 13/12/2021 07:13

I’d want to know if they are being admitted with Omicron or because of it. The two are not the same and the language used when reporting it is suitably vague.

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 07:17

I see we are back to 'with covid or of covid' stage of the cycle.

DockOTheBay · 13/12/2021 07:18

@rrhuth

I see we are back to 'with covid or of covid' stage of the cycle.
Very relevant in this case though wouldn't you say?
MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2021 07:19

@rrhuth

I see we are back to 'with covid or of covid' stage of the cycle.
Why not be clear rather than possibly interpreted either way?

It’s simple to make a statement that isn’t up for this interpretation

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 07:23

@DockOTheBay

 • the data will be clear when the data is clear
 • people who ask 'with covid or of covid' will think what they want anyway, it is a covid denial trope

Not really that’s just a lazy trite phrase

Communication can be clear and should be.

Whattochoosenow · 13/12/2021 07:25

No it’s not denial. It’s an assessment of how severe the disease is.

DockOTheBay · 13/12/2021 07:27

@rrhuth
If its only a few people hospitalised, which is is as its only the first ones, then surely someone must know whether they have been admitted with covid complications, or admitted with something else and tested positive. Why not just tell us?

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 07:28

@Whattochoosenow

No it’s not denial. It’s an assessment of how severe the disease is.
You need to wait for the data.

'with covid not of covid' absolutely is a covid denial trope.

MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2021 07:29

There have been clearer statements

So no ‘denial tripe’ is very lazy and incorrect.

Patient confidentiality when very low, and then for a while after it is meaningless due to small numbers because dipshits jump on any possible evidence of 'with not of'.

There isn't a big enough pool yet to draw accurate conclusions.

This is how it always is, in two weeks we will have more data.

Whattochoosenow · 13/12/2021 07:30

@rrhuth are you afraid?

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 07:31

I'm certainly not lazy, I'm using it specifically.

It is a covid denial trope.

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 07:32
@rrhuth are you afraid?
What? Afraid of what?

MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2021 07:35

@rrhuth

Yes it is it’s knee jerk and lazy to just trot out same phrases.

There are clearer ways to make the statement

I have seen two versions one that allows interpretation and one that doesn’t.

People communicating should choose the right one

Whattochoosenow · 13/12/2021 07:42

@rrhuth some of us are asking perfectly reasonable questions but we’re just met with accusations of “covid denier” .
It’s all a bit dramatic and so I’m asking if you’re afraid of the situation and what may lie ahead.

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 07:42

Nope, I'm not lazy.

MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2021 07:43

Well you might not be as a person but yes knee jerk phrases like that are a lazy and trite response.

Communication can and should be clear.

We haven't got enough data yet, so what are you asking about those patients for?

Even if they are all 'with not of', it is such a small sample as to be irrelevant.

We need the proper data, and it will be here soon.

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 07:48

@MarshaBradyo

Nope, my choice of phrase was not lazy. I chose it.

It may not be to your taste but it was not lazy.
