Gyan C Mehta @GyanCMehta
This looks bad - In Norway there is a suspected omicron outbreak of 40-50 out of 120 fully vaccinated people, ( also tested negative before attending a company Christmas party last Friday… One employee had just returned from SA and tested positive.

Sparklingbrook · 01/12/2021 23:09

Thread title reads as if Omicron has a second variant.

Wilma55 · 01/12/2021 23:16

Reported in 24 countries now.

Theplantisgrowing · 01/12/2021 23:18

Agree title is misleading

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 01/12/2021 23:29

MNHQ may change the heading if we report.

LittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 01/12/2021 23:33

Do we have any idea how it's affecting people yet?

I can't read the article, perhaps someone could translate. Are these people seriously ill, or do they have symptoms that are different to previous variants?

Doesn't say a huge amount tbh.

The mail online was leading earlier (its now the second story on the website) with an article about how a triple vaccinated Israeli thinks he contracted Omicron at a conference with 1250 people on 23rd November. In London.

He took three PCR tests on November 20, 21 and 24 - all negative. After returning to Israel he displayed symptoms and took a fourth PCR test (on 27th November) which was positive.

He could have got infected on the tube, the Docklands Light Railway, at the conference or in the airport (presumably that could also be the airport in Israel or on the plane itself too).

But that doesn't sound good either.

Theturnofthepoo · 01/12/2021 23:53

We’re not going to know for a few weeks.

Theturnofthepoo · 01/12/2021 23:54

So stop torturing yourselves.

LittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 02/12/2021 00:00

It's a discussion forum though, so we aren't 'torturing' ourselves are we? Just talking about what's going on

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2021 00:02

Doesn't sound like there's much information at the moment about what's going on. I only clicked because the title inferred there was news in that there was a second Omicron variant.

RedToothBrush · 02/12/2021 00:05

Well I'd say that there's probably a pretty big number of cases in the UK now. And that is pretty transmittable even if you are double vaccinated or triple vaxxed.

So I think the important big question now moves to how serious it is.

DaisyNGO · 02/12/2021 00:06

@Sparklingbrook

Thread title reads as if Omicron has a second variant.
I must admit, I looked at the title and thought, FFS, already.
JanglyBeads · 02/12/2021 00:06

OP sounds like you need to request a title edit?

But thanks for the second thread.

Itsnotallaboutyoubaby · 02/12/2021 00:09

I also thought it was another variant by the title lol.

But thanks for starting a new one OP

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2021 00:11

Would it have been helpful for newcomers to link to the first one?

chesirecat99 · 02/12/2021 00:29

He took three PCR tests on November 20, 21 and 24 - all negative. After returning to Israel he displayed symptoms and took a fourth PCR test (on 27th November) which was positive.

Maybe he caught it London but it isn't an absolute certainty. The average time between infection and onset of symptoms is 5 days but it can range from 1-14 days (with a few cases of longer incubation periods but I think it is something like 97% of cases are within 14 days of exposure). Incubation periods of 3 days or less (ie after he left the UK) are very common.

One of my DC caught delta in a super spreader event (so we can be very sure when he was infected). Everyone who was infected had symptoms within 24-48 hours after exposure.

Sky news are giving very mixed messages here.

4pm Wednesday "most omicron cases are mild" news.sky.com/story/covid-19-most-omicron-cases-are-mild-and-theres-no-evidence-to-suggest-vaccines-may-be-less-effective-against-the-variant-says-who-12483729

1am Thursday "Omicron a real cause for concern" news.sky.com/story/covid-19-emerging-picture-from-south-africa-suggests-omicron-variant-could-be-real-cause-for-concern-12484064

I'm surprised if the data did a 180 in those 9 hours

DockOTheBay · 02/12/2021 05:17

Isn't this a good thing if true? Would suggest omicron has been around for over a week already and yet no increase in cases.

Besides he might "think" he caught it in London but we know that some people have a 10 day incubation period (hence the 10 day isolation) so very difficult to pin down date.
