Utterly fed up (covid)

I'm totally fed up. I don't doubt for a second everyone else is. It's now been a couple of years, we've had our jabs... just doesn't seem to be putting us back to normal like we were 'promised'?

It still doesn't seem to change the fact that there is now a new variant and they are not 'ruling' out another lockdown, and right before Christmas also. I worry for my friends and family (and everyone else). My parents are getting on a bit and I think it would break my mums heart if they put us into lockdown again before Christmas like last year.....

How is everyone else feeling?

Well quite. There have been numerous winters where the NHS has been under enormous strain from flu etc - 20,000 deaths etc. There wasn’t the daily dashboard for that.

There is and always has been internally, with maybe a couple of news reports every year. It's just not publicised in the news every day like covid is.

SusieBob · 29/11/2021 10:24

There won't be a lockdown that stops people in the UK seeing family etc over Christmas, there just won't be. Overseas travel restrictions are perhaps more likely.

The government firstly know that introducting another lockdown is political suicide at this point, and secondly they will also know that large numbers will just ignore it anyway.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 29/11/2021 10:25

Did people really believe the 19th of July was the end of it? I mean it's a virus. It can do whatever the hell it wants. It is in control, not BoJo. Whatever the prick may have said, this was always a very likely scenario. Shocked people are, well, shocked 🤷

And for the love of Christ, if restrictions are needed, they are needed. It's not just for the old and frail, it's for all of us. We all need the NHS to not be overwhelmed, because we could all be that person who finds out they have a heart problem or a lump tomorrow.

‘No one is enjoying this’

Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure about that.

Dentistlakes · 29/11/2021 10:26

I also really miss my SIL and her family who we haven’t seen for over 2 years. They are supposed to be coming for Christmas from Singapore but I’m really worried they might not be allowed to travel now. I really feel for my PIL who have been completely stoic through it all but may miss seeing their daughter for yet another year. The whole situation stinks.

I often see people saying this as if it’s supposed to be reassuring - ‘the NHS struggles every winter’ - but isn’t it actually quite scary? If the NHS creaks at the seams in a bad flu year, and it’s still reeling from the impact of Covid with staff shortages etc, and we’re about to test it with the dual threats of Covid and flu for the first time this winter, couldn’t that end really badly?

I find this attitude a little childish to be honest. The vaccine has been successful in that we no longer have hundreds of people dying of covid per day, children are back in school and people are able to go to work and spend time with their loved ones. But now people are stamping their feet because they have to wear a mask in the supermarket or on the bus for a few more weeks. Life has largely returned to normal but no one "promised" that covid was just going to disappear altogether and you'd never have to hear about it again.

I completely agree

Between mid-October and mid-November, there were more than 5000 covid deaths in the UK. Who knows how many people left with long-term illness. I don't know why people think covid has 'gone away'.

Personally I think life is remarkably back to normal considering how many people are still dying and ill. People need to take a bigger perspective.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 29/11/2021 10:42

@musicviking1

I'm getting on with my life, I will be seeing family. I have children at different schools, one school has always insisted children continued to wear masks in communal areas but today they've said masks are now also mandatory in classrooms, the other school is only enforcing mask wearing in the corridors. There is no consistency anywhere. Quite frankly I am more fearful of getting cancer right now than I am of Covid.
I think that's the point though, the impact of Covid cases, on top of a bad flu season (which is likely post lockdown) plus a 6 month backlog in Cancer (& other) diagnoses is an NHS nightmare.

If we can control Covid to keep the numbers in hospital down then the NHS can hopefully keep up with normal diseases. Currently 20% of NHS beds have Covid patients in them. That's a huge additional strain on an already struggling system.

Covid measures are intended to stop that going up, it's not about your personal risk from Covid.

I don't see why what @TulipsGarden said is making the OP react as she did.

I don't see why what *@TulipsGarden* said is making the OP react as she did.
I'll explain then. I was told i thought I was basically 'special' and to 'f**king get on with it' in what part of my post did I ever say I was special and that I am NOT getting on with it? I've explained how I feel about what's going on at the moment, that's no different to the way others vocalise their opinions on here daily and on the news comments. It was a massive over exaggeration. As usual a post has been completely misinterpreted without any effort 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

@wtaf37 oh and just to make it clear, seeing as you chose me to pounce on with your sanctimonious fuckery. I am not anti mask and I'll be getting the booster. I also force fucking swabs down my kids throats and up their noses on a weekly basis, to try and keep others safe. I've avoided busy spaces and will continue to do so. I'm doing my bit for 'society'. If you want to call people out for being arrogant, irresponsible and a bad influence on their children, then start with the anti mask, anti vax loonies, because you're barking up the wrong tree here.

‘No one is enjoying this’

Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure about that.

Absolutely. Some people love to revel in misery and are delighted if others do the same.
VoluptuaGoodshag · 29/11/2021 11:22

I truly believe that the NHS is under massive strain which makes reporting all deaths and illnesses all the more logical. Then we can see just how much of all the other stuff, and not just Covid, it has to deal with. But the other stuff isn’t reported. Why?

HebeMumsnet · 29/11/2021 11:27

Morning, all. Just letting you know we've moved this thread over to the Coronavirus topic.

Do you realise that it's even more scary to catch cancer if we are seeing thousands of hospitalisations from covid each day? That if the NHS is on its knees dealing with covid from people doing what they want and seeing who they want when they really shouldn't, they can't treat people with things like cancer as they have to treat the people dying right now and not the people with cancer that have months or even years left?

This is exactly why we need to stop the spread.

Thank you for your charming response. Just to make it clear, you wrote...

I'll be seeing my family this year lockdown or not. I'm double vaccinated, so are they plus booster. I've followed the rules so far but not this time if there's another lockdown.

...so, yes, I think that's a bloody selfish attitude.

hangrylady · 29/11/2021 12:10

@wtaf37 think what you like, that's your business. I'm happy with my own choices, which include seeing my elderly parents at Christmas. Smile

zombiedog21 · 29/11/2021 12:20

I feel like I'm in the middle of a pandemic, which I am, so it's all completely expected.

Mojoj · 29/11/2021 12:35

There won't be another lockdown because most people won't comply. Why would you?

ilovesooty · 29/11/2021 12:42

If you're happy with your choices why do you feel the need to reiterate them? It is all hypothetical anyway. No one has told anyone that they can't see their families at Christmas.

What a fuss.

I was responding directly to one poster who took exception to my comment for some reason, despite others having said pretty much the same. If someone calls me selfish and arrogant I have every right to defend myself and also to tell them that their opinion of me is totally irrelevant in terms of my choices. For what it's worth I don't think there will be a lockdown at Christmas.

userxx · 29/11/2021 13:21

@Platax Snigger. My kind of humour.

Delatron · 29/11/2021 13:21

People talk about ‘stopping the spread’. You can only stop the spread if every single person in the entire world stays in their houses for weeks.

You could maybe ‘slow the spread. With lots and lots of harmful measures. With your end goal being tweaking the vaccine?

But people need to think long term here. This isn’t going away. How do you want to live your lives for the next 10 years? What’s your solution? Because zero Covid isn’t an option.
We’ll probably all be exposed over the next few years. So get your boosters and maybe get on with your lives.

Oh and there won’t be a lockdown at Christmas. They won’t even close the pubs or the nightclubs. I do think people need to start getting their heads round this now.

Travel will be annoyingly disrupted but that’s about it.

Lottapianos · 29/11/2021 13:24

'Oh and there won’t be a lockdown at Christmas. They won’t even close the pubs or the nightclubs. I do think people need to start getting their heads round this now.'

This is what I need to hear! I think you're right. I just hope that we don't pay for Christmas mixing with tighter restrictions in January
