Utterly fed up (covid)

I'm totally fed up. I don't doubt for a second everyone else is. It's now been a couple of years, we've had our jabs... just doesn't seem to be putting us back to normal like we were 'promised'?

It still doesn't seem to change the fact that there is now a new variant and they are not 'ruling' out another lockdown, and right before Christmas also. I worry for my friends and family (and everyone else). My parents are getting on a bit and I think it would break my mums heart if they put us into lockdown again before Christmas like last year.....

How is everyone else feeling?

There's no money left to compensate businesses for closing, it wont happen. Thank fuck!

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 29/11/2021 13:28

@Lottapianos

'Oh and there won’t be a lockdown at Christmas. They won’t even close the pubs or the nightclubs. I do think people need to start getting their heads round this now.'

This is what I need to hear! I think you're right. I just hope that we don't pay for Christmas mixing with tighter restrictions in January

Realistically though, what do people think things will look like after Christmas if people don't limit their social contacts during the festive period?
Delatron · 29/11/2021 13:34

People won’t be limiting their social contacts though. People will be going to pubs/parties/the theatre and nightclubs. Maybe not the cautious/vulnerable.

I don’t think people care anymore. Especially when they’ve had 3 vaccines! If that doesn’t work then there’s no plan/hope.

People genuinely are getting on with their lives (away from Mumsnet). Not one person I have spoken to in the last few days has mentioned this new variant.

If the government has any sense they’ll just switch the booster gap to 5 months and push on with that before the Christmas mixing.

And that's what everyone said before the first, and the second and the third lockdown.

The reality is it costs less to lockdown than for the NHS to collapse.

I don't think it is likely but we can not say for certain

I'm afraid that says far more about your social circle than mine and others.

They've already said it's 5 months nowHmm

Oh ok @JesusIsAnyNameFree

Sorry about my busy and wonderful social life 🙄. I’ll be supporting the struggling arts industry next week with my trip to the theatre. Don’t know what your point is? Would you like us all to stay at home? For how long exactly? Until
COVID disappears? Good luck with that..

curlymom · 29/11/2021 13:46

The nhs is under an immense amount of pressure even without this new worry from covid. Many posters are assuming measures taken are just for covid but there are other people who will miss out if beds are taken again by covid patients. My Dh was in cancer remission through out lockdown where checks were over looked in favour of covid . He has just been treated for locally advanced cancer, throughout treatment constantly warned that treatment may stop if things change. Thankfully treatment is done. We will take nay measure required to ensure others get their best care at the most horrible diagnosis. Some people need to get a grip and look at the bigger picture. I don’t care if I get criticised for this post. I can’t believe some of the selfish comments here.

Who mentioned your wonderful social life 😂 the new variant is being discussed amongst friends, family and colleagues. In some circles, such as your wonderful one, people are burying their heads in the sand. A bit like when a toddler doesn't want to accept the fact it's bedtime and hold their hands over their ears and go "nonono!!". It's cute. Keep at it.
Delatron · 29/11/2021 13:52

@JesusIsAnyNameFreeI don’t think getting on with your life is ‘burying your head in the sand’. Obviously the most sensible thing is not to panic until we have the facts. Wild speculation as seen on these threads doesn’t help.

Thinking you can actually stop a virus doing what it does is burying your head in the sand.

Covid will be with us forever. There will always be new variants. Does that sound like head in the sand talk? Or just accepting this is life now and getting on with it. You should try it...

So let's just let the NHS crumble. The Mighty Delatron has spoken. Boris better listen.

Veeveeoxox · 29/11/2021 13:55

Nope I will be meeting family for Christmas even if the government are going to ban it I will take an LFT before . I will wear a mask when I go shopping for essentials but it will mostly be online. I won't go to pubs or restaurants while mask wearing is in place I'm not spending my money to not really enjoy the experience I will just get takeaways.

WouldBeGood · 29/11/2021 13:55

I’m with you @Delatron.

The hysteria and shrieking to be locked up/wear masks/can’t be too careful is doing my head in.

MarmitesMyMate · 29/11/2021 13:56

I'll be seeing my friends and family. Just like I did last Yr. Nearly 2 years of this complete and utter shit show.
I've known a few to get covid.. After their jabs this autum.

I'd sooner take the risk than be dictated to.
My kids will have a normal Xmas seeing GPS aunts uncles etc. Just like they did last Yr, year before and many before that.

And yes some may see as selfish, some may agree but too scared to admit it. I live in a large city and it's got packed Xmas markets. Packed light switch ons packed bars and places. With no precautions taken. Yet our rates are low! So sod it. I'll take the risk. I have no elderly people I see so no one to protect.

Delatron · 29/11/2021 13:58

@JesusIsAnyNameFree Oh ok we’re back to ‘protect the NHS at all costs’ for how long? Every time we get a new variant? Do you not think we might need a new plan by now?

If people getting on with their lives, whilst being triple vaccinated causes the NHS to crumble then we may need a new strategy don’t you think? Or you just enjoy endless lockdowns? Let’s not care about people’s livelihoods as long as the precious NHS is safe. Eh? That policy will have lots of support. Well done.

blackcurrantjam · 29/11/2021 13:58

Completely over it. Children isolating. Work difficult because of isolation. Can't live like this anymore. When on earth will it end?

ilovesooty · 29/11/2021 13:58

You should try it

You negate any valid points in your post with that dig, not to mention your passive aggressive comments about your social life.

Isn't it possible to debate in a measured way and find a middle ground in assessing what might be a sensible approach for society as a whole?

ilovesooty · 29/11/2021 14:00

It doesn't apply to hospitality.

What on earth does socialising with extended family inside your house have to do with people's livelihoods?

Delatron · 29/11/2021 14:01

@WouldBeGood I know. What’s the end goal here?

There’s I much short sightedness on here. You can’t stop a virus. You can slow it and delay cases. But there needs to be a good reason to do that. Compliance with any restrictions will be very low now. Especially amongst the triple vaccinated.

Delatron · 29/11/2021 14:05

@JesusIsAnyNameFree I have no idea what your point is anymore.

What you want? No indoor socialising?

My point is minor restrictions have little impact so if you want to ‘slow’ the spread then you need major restrictions which do impact people’s livelihoods.

They will not place restrictions on indoor mixing anyway.

blackcurrantjam · 29/11/2021 14:07

Lockdown for double/ triple vaccinated/immune makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

WouldBeGood · 29/11/2021 14:08

Yep @blackcurrantjam. I’m triple vaccinated but makes me question the merits of the whole thing

Delatron · 29/11/2021 14:09

@ilovesooty I don’t believe there is a middle ground and I’m entitled to that view.

You either have serious restrictions and go for low cases (not going to be a strategy)

Or you focus on the things that have an impact but don’t restrict people such as vaccinations.

Years of half hearted yet impactful restrictions will not alter the outcome of this pandemic. You can merely slow the spread. It won’t go away.
And the government strategy was very much not to slow the spread through summer.

"I have no idea what your point is anymore" describes how I felt the other day just before you disappeared from another discussion we were having regarding covid. Imagine that 🤷

Delatron · 29/11/2021 14:10

I also agree placing restrictions on vaccinated people will have a very serious impact on vaccine uptake in the future. That is what would scare me right now.
