Utterly fed up (covid)

ExpectingLady93 · 29/11/2021 08:13

I'm totally fed up. I don't doubt for a second everyone else is. It's now been a couple of years, we've had our jabs... just doesn't seem to be putting us back to normal like we were 'promised'?

It still doesn't seem to change the fact that there is now a new variant and they are not 'ruling' out another lockdown, and right before Christmas also. I worry for my friends and family (and everyone else). My parents are getting on a bit and I think it would break my mums heart if they put us into lockdown again before Christmas like last year.....

How is everyone else feeling?

This shite belongs in the Covid topic with the rest of the hysterical “me me me” brigade.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 29/11/2021 10:03
@Nimchinge no, not during our first lockdown. I think bubbles were introduced in second lockdown (?) but I didn't qualify for one. The 'third' lockdown we were allowed to socialise outside but it was also a very long before restrictions ended - longer than a lot of our neighbours in Europe).
Bubbles were introduced during lockdown 1, on June 13th, a single adult household could bubble with one other household and meet indoors with no distancing. It meant I could bubble with my DP but still couldn't see my family as they were too far away for a short outdoor meet up in a park to be possible.

Chasingaftermidnight · 29/11/2021 10:04

I might be hopelessly naive but I’m choosing to stay optimistic for now. A return to mask wearing in shops and on public transport and quarantine/PCRs for incoming travellers seem like sensible measures to slow the spread of the new variant to give scientists time to find out more about it. And I was pleased to see the government reacting quickly for once.

And maybe Omicron isn’t actually that much of a big deal - we don’t know if it’ll be vaccine resistant or cause more severe disease or whatever.

As I say maybe I’m hopelessly naive.

Lottapianos · 29/11/2021 10:07

'I am going to make a bold promise. We will ALL be celebrating Christmas with family as normal this year'

This is exactly what I need to read today. I am utterly fed up OP, just like you. I havent seen my family in Ireland for 2 years and we are due to visit them over Christmas. Everyone is fully vaxxed and boostered. I feel sick at the thought of not being able to travel. I know I'm getting ahead of myself but everything is so uncertain again with this new variant. I agree with others that restrictions around mixing over Christmas would be pointless because most people will just ignore them, but if people are not allowed to travel into Ireland or out of UK then we are screwed. The uncertainty is dreadful but nothing for it I know apart from sit tight

Gerlais · 29/11/2021 10:07

The only I’m worrying about is the dickheads going out panic buying again. Can’t be arsed with that shit ever again

I went to one of Asda’s “nhs only hour” shops and everyone was pushing each other out of the way, arguing and practically fighting over tins of beans and bog roll. I left with nothing and once I was outside I was faced with people arguing with asda staff about how unfair it was that NHS staff were clearing the shelves of everything before anyone else has a chance to get anything.

The whole thing was one of the ugliest demonstrations of human behaviour I’ve ever seen

Confusedteacher · 29/11/2021 10:07

@spitneybrears Totally reasonable and normal position to take - I don’t agree. Hence the eye-rolling.

JollyJoon · 29/11/2021 10:08

@Lottapianos
Ireland and UK relationship is "special" and there are no restrictions between the two

DoctorSnortles · 29/11/2021 10:09

@Confusedteacher

Am I going mad?! Of course people can be fed up, we’re all fed up! But saying that you wouldn’t follow any new restrictions because of it is reckless. In my opinion. Not particularly directed *@ExpectingLady93* but the many people on this thread who have said this, or words to that effect.
You’re not the one losing their marbles, @Confusedteacher

‘ I don’t want any more restrictions! I won’t wear a mask. I won’t comply with social distancing. I won’t open my windows because I will be cold. I won’t take any steps intended to prevent spread....but I also WILL NOT COMPLY WITH THE LOCKDOWN THAT WILL BE CAUSED BY PEOPLE NOT WEARING MASKS, NOT SOCIAL DISTANCING, NOT OPENING WINDOWS!’

Christ alive. I do think some people act like they have been dropped on their heads, I really do.

Lottapianos · 29/11/2021 10:09

'@Lottapianos

Yes I know, I'm just prepared for that to change!

hangrylady · 29/11/2021 10:13

Precisely why pandemic continues

Utter selfishness and arrogance.

if you have children, are you happy setting such an example - ignoring rules and the effect your actions may have on society?

I'm hardly out clubbing every night! My parents are elderly and not in the best health, who knows how many more Christmases they have left. Yes I do have children and yes I'm happy to set an example of not following every rule blindly.

LindaEllen · 29/11/2021 10:14

@Gerlais

I just don’t understand it. They have said the symptoms for the new variant tend to be mild - so why the panic?

I’m double vaccinated and have no issues wearing a mask … nor do I socialise much anyway so my life is largely unaffected by restrictions but still … something doesn’t add up about the whole thing and it is getting tiresome

Erm. Really? You do know that 'mild' just means 'treated at home' don't you? You can still feel utterly shite with 'mild' symptoms, and there are always groups of people who won't have mild symptoms and will actually die.

It has ALWAYS been about protecting those people. ALWAYS.

DerTrotzkopf · 29/11/2021 10:15

@Wizzbangfizz I had covid last november and have mild asthma. I was the sickest I've ever been and now have LC. Agree that I'm in the minority but a sizeable one. Many people are discovering that it's not like a mild cold and recovery takes longer than a week.

Gerlais · 29/11/2021 10:15

A bit like the flu then?

mincepiesallround · 29/11/2021 10:16

@gannett

Don't know why anyone was expecting a return to normal in the sense of being able to completely forget about Covid. This year was a huge step forward but the pandemic has still been going on. New variants were always on the cards. Vaccines weren't a magic bullet that would end it all just like that (especially with vaccination inequality across the world).

I don't think we can (or should) forget about Covid for a while yet, just as we don't forget about STDs and therefore practice safe sex. But the hope is obviously that taking extremely non-onerous precautions like masks and vaccines will stave off a repeat of 2020.

Agree! I’ve said it before on here but how did anyone believe that ‘freedom day’ meant the end of any restrictions?!
spitneybrears · 29/11/2021 10:16

@Confusedteacher well fear not as you've made your personal disapproval of others' feelings very clear.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 29/11/2021 10:17

I'm triple vexed, I wear my mask, I like the quiet life anyway BUT ......

I cannot for the life of me fathom why there is this running total of cases, deaths, ICU, vaccinations every single day on the news but no comparative analysis with other diseases.

TulipsGarden · 29/11/2021 10:19

Yes, we are all fed up. You're not special. No-one is enjoying this. But there's not much we can do, is there - the pandemic won't go away because you're bored with it.

Wear a mask, reduce your contacts, and get the fuck on with it. I doubt we'll go into lockdown again but if we do, it's because there's a significant risk to healthcare. The government isn't doing this for fun.

Fleek · 29/11/2021 10:20

@Nimchinge

The UK lockdowns weren't exactly restrictive though were they?
Park benches were taped up so you couldn't sit down outside - there were police out ascertaining if you had driven too far from your home for your exercise (they were out with drones in the most extreme cases, spotting people). We didn't even get in the car to drive 5 minutes to our favourite local walk for months because you weren't allowed to travel unless it was an essential journey People were yelling at others online and in person if someone stayed outside their house for too long to exercise, people were accused of killing others if they did so People in care homes declined drastically for having zero visitors. There were some heartbreaking stories of elderly people losing the ability to speak/eat People went into hospitals (for serious treatments, to die etc) alone. They weren't allowed visitors in many cases and then when visitors were allowed in they weren't allowed to touch the person dying - I think early on a 13 year old boy died without family with him and his mother couldn't go to his funeral. Funerals generally were restricted in terms of visitor numbers and people were forced to sit far apart. Schools were shut and a sizeable number of children received little to no education - my cousins five year old daughter went from being a well-adjusted happy child to a little girl who was pulling her own hair out and having night terrors Public loos were closed (that has an impact on anyone vulnerable) Restaurants/cinemas/cafes/hotels were shut for months. In my case I turned up at a hotel one night because there was abuse at home and I needed to get out - I was told, no, you have to leave, you can only stay if you are officially travelling on work. I had to get in the car and drive back home. Even when restrictions loosened there were rules around how many people you could meet up with and it was outdoors only for ages

Some people didn't essentially experience the lockdowns here as restrictive lockdowns because they broke every rule going - but for most people, they were severely restrictive. I know of several suicides locally to me which happened as a direct result of them.

Well quite. There have been numerous winters where the NHS has been under enormous strain from flu etc - 20,000 deaths etc. There wasn’t the daily dashboard for that.

I feel very similar.

I very much doubt that there will be any restrictions on private social arrangements and I really don't feel I need to read incessant posts where people tell us they won't comply. The wearing of masks for most is simply a sensible precaution and not worth chest beating and drama.

Ghoulette · 29/11/2021 10:21

I'll wear a mask but they can fuck right off if I am going to commit to another lockdown.

I got the jabs and continued to wear masks and wash my hands and keep my distance while others didn't. If you are Vaccinated you are pretty well protected and if you aren't vaccinated through choice (NOT medical necessity) then more fool you.

Not going to isolate myself from my family again because of a few selfish fuckers who are already vaccinated with all sorts and put all kinds of other chemical drugs in their body they have zero clue about.

Hmmmwhatnametochoose · 29/11/2021 10:22

I'll be seeing my family this year lockdown or not

I most likely won't. Family (including grown up children) who I haven't seem for 2 years are due to fly here from abroad next week, for a 3 week stay. I suspect the uncertainty about flying back to their country with the increased risk of having to isolate will mean they will cancel.

I'm utterly devastated.

Dentistlakes · 29/11/2021 10:23

I’m fed up too op. I’m in Scotland so we’ve been wearing masks throughout, but the reintroduction of measures in England makes me feel things are closing back in. Although I do wear a mask, I’m pretty fed up with them and do think they are having a detrimental effect on learning in schools. I have always worked from home, but I’m fed up with DH working from home and desperately want him back in the office. I need my own space and hate having people around me 24/7. I’m very worried about the possibility of schools going back to home learning again. Not sure if I can go that again.

I'm getting on with my life, I will be seeing family. I have children at different schools, one school has always insisted children continued to wear masks in communal areas but today they've said masks are now also mandatory in classrooms, the other school is only enforcing mask wearing in the corridors. There is no consistency anywhere.
Quite frankly I am more fearful of getting cancer right now than I am of Covid.
