This seems really concerning. I personally am in favour of the vaccination and I think care home staff should be vaccinated but this seems like a massive shortage of staff to compensate for in an industry that is already having difficulty with recruitment. What is the government doing to ensure vulnerable patients are getting the care they need?

Read behind the headlines- all they have to do is sign a piece of paper saying they’re not having it on medical advice. Nothing will change!

Reduceddutiesboredom · 11/11/2021 11:56

…sacking care staff in the middle of a pandemic & care staff shortage. Sounds about right.

Are you sure?
Saltyquiche · 11/11/2021 21:18

There is no evidence that the vaccination stops the virus spread

Wellbythebloodyhell · 11/11/2021 21:25

I'll never understand anyone who thinks this is a good idea! I'd take an unvaccinated carer over no carer at all any day. Sacking thousands of competent and much needed carers in the middle of a pandemic or even in pre pandemic times Is only going to create more pressure on the NHS and social services not alleviate them..Silly idea

Vivana · 11/11/2021 22:37

It goes deeper than just the mandatory vaccine. Such as bad pay, long hours, so much training, bad working conditions, short staffed. Companies expect to much of staff

You're completely and hopelessly wrong...

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.newscientist.com/article/2294250-how-much-less-likely-are-you-to-spread-covid-19-if-youre-vaccinated/amp/

You seem to be unable to differentiate between: "the vaccine doesn't prevent all infection" with "the vaccine doesn't prevent infection at all"

Warhertisuff · 11/11/2021 22:47

@Saltyquiche

To quote from the article I attached: "Vaccinated people do transmit the virus in some cases, but the data are super crystal-clear that the risk of transmission for a vaccinated individual is much, much lower than for an unvaccinated individual.”

Despite my strong belief that carers should be vaccinated, I do wonder if this is actually counterproductive.

Good - what is there to say

Christ on a bike!

There's a TON of information out there to prove vaccinations HUGELY reduce transmission, illness & death.

CovidCorvid · 11/11/2021 23:20

My village care home is having to shut due to lack of staff, they can't recruit.

hatgirl · 11/11/2021 23:21

Anecdotally lots are shifting to work in domiciliary care in people's homes if the conversations I've been involved and overheard in this week are anything to go by

One care provider was telling me she's taken on several staff on short term contracts for 8ish weeks who genuinely thought they wouldn't really lose their jobs in care homes and have only just gone to get their jabs in recent days/weeks. She's hoping a few might stay with her in Dom care but equally she's just pleased to have extra staff over the Christmas period..

It's just robbing Peter to pay Paul though.

I agree. And come April we might be sacking thousands of NHS staff as well.
Totallydefeated · 11/11/2021 23:24

Can’t work out if the government massively over estimated the amount of otherwise vaccine-hesitant careworkers who would capitulate if threatened with the sack, or whether this is a calculated attempt to fuck up the care sector in the same way they’re deliberately running down the NHS.

Surely they knew the risk they were running? It’s not as though care work is well-paid and a job a lot of people would be desperate to hold on to at all costs.

Either way, this is extremely bad news for anyone reliant on careworkers. Most of whom will be able to pick up another easier and better-paid job elsewhere.

I’m so glad I don’t currently have a relative in a care home.

That’s not correct. We send contractors into care homes and whilst there is a temporary self certification of not having the vaccine for medical reasons whilst they get the system up and running the list of reasons for exemption is very small and has to be agreed by a doctor. The staff member will be signing to say they meet the exemption criteria.
Lollolloll · 11/11/2021 23:46

Well they’re obviously not the brightest are they? They’ve had ample warnings and chances to get vaccinated and would rather not do it and be out of work before Christmas?

It’s their choice, but they shouldn’t be eligible for benefits.

userperuser · 12/11/2021 00:02

There won’t be any need for benefits as there are plenty of better paid jobs on the market at the moment with better conditions, I’m sure a lot will never look back.

MercyBooth · 12/11/2021 00:04

@Lollolloll Bet they were good enough in your eyes last year though. This is why i posted last April that April 2020 would be the optimum time for a walkout. Because i knew that they would get no thanks for it and that attitudes towards them would revert to type.

But what has happened is even worse than what i predicted.

Pacmann · 12/11/2021 00:06

Plenty of jobs in the NHS for them (until april).

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/11/2021 00:10

Much as I think everyone should be vaccinated if they can, this is a crazy move. The care shortage will kill hundreds of people, and I mean that quite literally, without hyperbole.

Of course they should!! Not their kids fault is it
Bideyinn · 12/11/2021 00:12

There’s a huge crisis in staffing across all types of care services, this will be devastating. I really don’t understand the government’s thinking? I’m glad though that it doesn’t apply in Scotland. I’m provaccination btw but think that the reluctance to vaccinate could have been dealt with in a better way.

Vivana · 12/11/2021 04:35

I'm happy I've left social care and the stress that goes with it. I left due to other things and had my vaccines. I feel like a major stressful job has gone now and I've got a better paid job without all the crap I had to go through in social care.

Parky04 · 12/11/2021 04:45

My neighbour is bright enough to have found an alternative job which is better paid and has much more favourable working conditions. She has had both jabs, but walked out in protest because her best friend hasn't. Possibly the nicest person I have ever met and will be a massive loss to the care sector.
