Is this rare?

Let me start by saying I know there's not a shred of truth in most (probably all) covid conspiracies. But in the entire 18 months or so of covid I've only ever read or seen on the news about people having covid. No one I know has had it, nor have friends of friends or extended family (that I've been told anyway). Am I just incredibly lucky? It feels like I should've experienced it in real life by now!

I’d say it’s pretty rare, yes. I know 30+ people who have had it.

GreenLunchBox · 29/10/2021 22:00

Where on earth do you live? New Zealand?

heywassuphello · 29/10/2021 22:01

North of England!

LilyPond2 · 29/10/2021 22:01

Assuming you're in the UK, you almost certainly do know someone who has had Covid. Not everyone who has Covid feels the need to broadcast the fact, so you wouldn't necessarily know, save for people who are close family or very close friends.

heywassuphello · 29/10/2021 22:01

Unless people I know or I've had it without symptoms maybe?

I went ages without knowing anyone who had it but now loads of people I know have had it. I'm not sure how I havent to be honest

userxx · 29/10/2021 22:02

@heywassuphello

North of England!

Seriously? You know no one ? I'm in the north of England and it's rife in my area.

heywassuphello · 29/10/2021 22:03

@LilyPond2 sorry that wasn't to you.. yes maybe I've just not heard about it

Really rare!

Most of my friends/family and work colleagues have it. Sadly including 3 who died.

Forestdweller11 · 29/10/2021 22:03

Up until 6 weeks ago I knew no one who had had Covid. I can probably get up to about 20 now. Also north of England.

heywassuphello · 29/10/2021 22:04

Well I'm in the north, most of my family are in the south, but same difference really

Elephantsparade · 29/10/2021 22:04

My family on both sides have so far escaped but amongst friens and colleagues I know so many.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 29/10/2021 22:04

Do you have children at school?

heywassuphello · 29/10/2021 22:05

@ThePoisonousMushroom no just a toddler at nursery

I know loads of people who have or have got covid. Both DS and DH have had it. My DM and my cousin died of it. So you are very lucky OP

iwishiwasafish · 29/10/2021 22:06

Incredibly rare. Perhaps people just aren’t telling you for some reason?

lisaandalan · 29/10/2021 22:08

Lots of people have had it and don't even know x

Lougle · 29/10/2021 22:08

I didn't know anyone who had had it. Then my children went back to school after the policy changed to make family members attend school despite Covid in the house. It's ripped through the school, several of DDs' friends have had it, and we got it 2 weeks ago.

whatswithtodaytoday · 29/10/2021 22:08

I'd say that's rare to the point of almost impossible. Do you not know many people? And no cases in your child's nursery?

I'd say most of my friends have had it now, or at least someone in their household has.

Duckypoohs · 29/10/2021 22:10

I have heard of a few having it, usually contacts of kids. I wonder whether our little family actually had it in Jan 2020. One by one my kids were really ill, really suffered with something, I was the last to get it and was diagnosed with pneumonia, I had antibiotics but the shortness of breath and cough lingered for ages. Funnily enough I didn't feel ill with it, just the lungs. The doctor told me to phone 111 if it got worse because my lungs sounded so terrible. I was a bit freaked by that, but obviously was fine.

honkytonkheroe · 29/10/2021 22:11

I know loads of people who have had it very recently. Loads in my son's school and also mine and my husband's work. It must be very unusual.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 29/10/2021 22:12

I know of 2 but they're family, I don't think I'd know if many of my friends had had it as it's just not something we talk about. We are also of an age where we are unlikely to struggle so unlikely to ask for help.

Bontanics · 29/10/2021 22:13

I don't know anyone who has had it either.

heywassuphello · 29/10/2021 22:14

To be fair, myself or people close to me could've been asymptomatic. Just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean it's impossible
