Let me start by saying I know there's not a shred of truth in most (probably all) covid conspiracies. But in the entire 18 months or so of covid I've only ever read or seen on the news about people having covid. No one I know has had it, nor have friends of friends or extended family (that I've been told anyway). Am I just incredibly lucky? It feels like I should've experienced it in real life by now!

I tutor around 30 pupils from over a dozen different schools. There’s barely a family who hasn’t had it and a good half of them have had it themselves. This wasn’t the case - up until the summer I think I had 4 pupils who had had it. This term it has ripped through every school in the area like wildfire. Just before half term it was crazy - I was getting message after message about positive lateral flows. Last week almost half my lessons ended up being online. I’m south east.

I have friends who are still working from home, children have grown beyond school, and they know almost no one who has had it.

I think it depends upon the circles you move in.

Sprostongreen21 · 30/10/2021 00:58

I live in the north and it’s been rife here since beforethe summer. High cases. Many of my close friends and family haven’t had it. However I’ve still lost a friend and an uncle.

I work in a hospital. Loads of my colleagues have had it and obviously I’ve worked with many positive patients too.

OverweightPidgeon · 30/10/2021 01:03

I think I’m the only person I know who hasn’t had it !

Tibbles988 · 30/10/2021 01:08

I live in NZ and I know one person who has had it. She works in a medical center in the UK

DoctorSnortles · 30/10/2021 01:13

I didn’t know anyone who had had it (except a few of my students) until schools went back in September. Suddenly I know loads of people with it - 15% of the kids at school, work colleagues, neighbours, friends of DD, relatives...

It may happen upon you yet, OP. Good luck.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 30/10/2021 07:52

Up until the start of this summer I didn't really know anyone who had tested positive. Since then there has always been someone in my circle of friends, family and neighbours who has it. It has been accelerating fast over the past month. We finally had it in the house when my son tested positive a couple of weeks ago. So far none of us living with him have caught it thankfully.

lljkk · 30/10/2021 11:25

Someone at work I met once in person (20m ago) has had it. We talked a lot on emails & TEAMS, too, so I do feel like I 'know' her.

A few people I met once, very briefly, maybe at a party, have had it.
Some of my cousins who I have met about 8x in my life have had it.
I know people who lost (they died) a relatives or close contact.

It's not very many.

CallMeNutribullet · 30/10/2021 11:38

I'd say it's very rare. I have it right now, so does a cousin and his wife (not linked to us), my brother had it months ago. An uncle is still suffering the effects of having Covid last year.
I'm in Scotland.

Hm2020 · 30/10/2021 11:52

Not only do I know multiple people who have had it but I know personally of 3 deaths. One extremely close.

Howunusualisthis · 30/10/2021 11:56

Incredibly rare IMO. I know of dozens and dozens of people who've had it, and at least 10 deaths. Four families in immediate area have it now. It is so NOT over!

I was the same as you (I’m in the east) Not only did I not known anyone who has had it but I didn’t even know anyone who knew anyone that had it! But then DS got it a couple of weeks ago so I do now but nobody else in the household (6 of us) has caught it.
Glitterblue · 30/10/2021 16:54

I'm in the North of England and up until the last few months, I didn't personally know anyone who'd had it but now it's going right through DD's school and she has it at the moment. When we had that local lockdown this time last year, everyone felt it was overkill in this area because so few people had it.

To have been so removed from Covid seems utterly incredible.

Believe me I know that! There has been cases at the school so I’m obviously aware of it happening close to home but nobody me or the kids have known.

Good for you. I have had a friend die and my sister is suffering from long covid.
