Is this rare?

Let me start by saying I know there's not a shred of truth in most (probably all) covid conspiracies. But in the entire 18 months or so of covid I've only ever read or seen on the news about people having covid. No one I know has had it, nor have friends of friends or extended family (that I've been told anyway). Am I just incredibly lucky? It feels like I should've experienced it in real life by now!

I don't know many people but I know more than zero. One close family member, a couple of people at work, a few friends of friends. Most people I know can work from home which I'm sure has helped.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/10/2021 22:22

Different country here - no cases at DS school, none in my office, non within my family or social circle. I know of cases as some of my family members work in care and I read the statistics etc.

On the other hand DH has had it but we only found out via a pre-OP blood test. I was tested soon after - again pre-OP - and nothing.

So it is very likely that you know people who have had it, but neither you nor they realized.

whereisthekey · 29/10/2021 22:23

do you work and have many friends?

leccybill · 29/10/2021 22:27

No isolations last year at the nursery?

Do you socialise?

At least 200 children at my school have had it, 20 staff (including me), all of my friends now, their children, 4 family members, my dog walker and my hairdresser.

So, yes, rare.

Caliexpidocioussuper · 29/10/2021 22:29

I know at least 50 that have had it. That’s not including all the ones I know of through my job as a teacher.

Cornettoninja · 29/10/2021 22:31

Well there’s 68 million people in the country and almost 9 million confirmed cases so unless you know significantly less than 7/8 people then it’s rare yes.

Warhertisuff · 29/10/2021 22:32

Roughly how many people are in your circle of friends/family?

With 9 million positive confirmed cases, a bit of maths tells you that you be chance of picking 30 people at random who've never had a positive confirmed Covid case is 1.5%. That falls to 0.01% for 50 people.

namechange147258 · 29/10/2021 22:33

Most people I know including myself have had it. London though.

XenoBitch · 29/10/2021 22:34

A fair few FB acquaintances have had it, but in terms of real life friends and family... one friend had it, one relative, and a friend of the family died with it (I say with as he had terminal cancer but tested positive when in hospital for end of life care).

SickAndTiredAgain · 29/10/2021 22:35

I live in the SE and only know one person personally who has had it.
I’m aware of other people who’ve had it though, like a colleague of my mum, someone at work that I don’t know etc.

I don’t have a lot of friends though, so that might be why!

Junibug · 29/10/2021 22:36

Similar here - none of my close friends or extended family have had it. No cases at my child's nursery. I know a few 'friends of friends' that have tested positive but that's it.

LordoftheDanceSaidHe · 29/10/2021 22:37

Really rare.
And really fucking lucky. It's an awful awful illness. I've watched my ds struggling for breath and DH has been very poorly. I know so many people I cannot count and three who have died.
I think I'm relatively lucky compared with many.
I hate to be negative but give it a month or so and I doubt you'll be saying the same...

Hesma · 29/10/2021 22:38

As someone who had it December 2019 and again last week all I can say is that you are very lucky!

BitterTits · 29/10/2021 22:38

What do you do for a living? I'm a teacher and know many, many people professionally who've had it; some double vaccinated. I don't have a huge circle of friends but again, know several people who've had it - several members of my family too but not my parents, children or siblings so far.

MrsAvocet · 29/10/2021 22:39

Whilst I knew of people who had had it, I didn't know anyone personally until quite recently. Then the return to school changed everything and since then I know loads of people who have been infected . Our entire family have had it and my DH is currently seriously ill in hospital as a result, despite having 2 vaccine doses. (Also North of England.) I'd say you're unusual not to know anybody who has been affected yet.

BitterTits · 29/10/2021 22:39

What I mean is that if you work in an office, WFH or you're a sahm, you're less likely to know anyone who's tested positive.

Warhertisuff · 29/10/2021 22:40

And that's confirmed cases, and won't count all those who couldn't get tested in the first wave, those who had it but never actually tested and those who were asymptomatic.

Cambridge Uni today published estimates that 48% of people in the U.K. (see attack rate tab in link below) have been infected, and 78% of 5-14 year olds!

JennyForeigner · 29/10/2021 22:43

I've got it today. My husband has it. We know loads of people who have had it in the last week - mainly parents, and being from a town with a high older and BAME population, I have a colleague who lost eight relatives in the first wave.

We caught it because my son started settle sessions at nursery this week and didn't think twice when he came home looking knackered and a bit frazzled. Tested because we were having friends over and was surprised to be positive. Two hours later it hit like a tonne of bricks.

Now feel shit.

usernotfound0000 · 29/10/2021 22:44

I feel that's pretty rare unless you have a small circle. I made it to January only knowing 1 person who had it but I know loads now. A few are direct friends and family, including myself, but lots of children/family members of work colleagues/neighbours/Facebook friends, it's pretty rife right now!

Twolostsoulsswimminginafishbow · 29/10/2021 22:44

I live in the North. If you know me you wouldn’t know I have it at this very moment because I haven’t advertised the fact. I know lots personally but they’ve never put it on social media or emailed all their contacts.

JennyForeigner · 29/10/2021 22:46

And yes, we are double-vaxxed, thankfully, because if this is the minor version I don't want the major.

pourmeanotherglass · 29/10/2021 22:47

I knew of very few in the first wave, but many in the 3rd wave. Im in the SW and numbers are high here now.

DaxtheDestroyer · 29/10/2021 22:48

Until 3 or 4 weeks ago, I'd only had one distant relative who'd had it. In the last few weeks, all of DHs family, umpteen friends and one of my dc have all had it. We're in the south west and it's spread like wildfire here because of the dodgy lab tests. It's absolutely rife at school.

BurntO · 29/10/2021 22:50

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t know anyone!! Yes it’s rare.
My in laws have had it. My boss has had it. My auntie has had it. Do you work OP? Have a large family? If not then I can see why

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 29/10/2021 22:50

This time last year the only person I knew who had it was my teenage daughter who was 200 miles away in university. Since September two uncles and four cousins have positive PCR's and various degrees of illness. I also have a friend who has had it for the second time and I know of various friends and friends of friends.
