Is this rare?

Let me start by saying I know there's not a shred of truth in most (probably all) covid conspiracies. But in the entire 18 months or so of covid I've only ever read or seen on the news about people having covid. No one I know has had it, nor have friends of friends or extended family (that I've been told anyway). Am I just incredibly lucky? It feels like I should've experienced it in real life by now!

In the last few weeks:
My neice and nephew
2 of dd"s friends
15% of ds's year
A neighbour

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 29/10/2021 22:56

I've had it. My dgd has had it twice. Dd and son in law had it a few weeks ago.

godmum56 · 29/10/2021 23:02

I live in an area where most of us are well over 50 so were/are careful about precautions and I have got a very small friendship group. Even i know (not know of) two people who have had it. Neither had it badly thank goodness. So yes I would say your situation is rare.

2boysand1princess · 29/10/2021 23:03

@heywassuphello

North of England!
I’m in the north and I know plenty who have had it and recovered. Including family members. Sadly 3 have died on my street though.
ItsAlwaysThere · 29/10/2021 23:07

I didn't really know anyone personally until this September, then when schools returned it was everywhere.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 29/10/2021 23:07

I have a secondary school child so know lots over the last 2 months. Why they weren’t told to wear masks in communal areas is beyond me. Next week they will be back to wearing masks although half the school will be off because they have covid.

Handsnotwands · 29/10/2021 23:12

I felt the same until a couple of months ago. Then everyone got it

I live rurally, the kids go to a small village school, I do all my shopping online and WFH, as do most my friends / colleagues and family, so I’m retrospect it’s not surprising we escaped up until the time we started traveling and mingling again

WonderfulYou · 29/10/2021 23:12

I’m quite surprised you don’t know anyone who’s had it recently.
When we were in lockdown I didn’t know of hardly anyone but now it’s almost everyday that someone is testing positive. I guess we didn’t have the tests that we do now.

I work in a school and just before the half term we had 5 test positive just in one morning. I also know a few people who have picked it up from work even if they work outdoors.
I don’t know anyone who has been double jabbed and caught it though.

IncessantNameChanger · 29/10/2021 23:12

I have had it, so has ds. Also my sisters best friend. That is the extent of people I know first hand who have had it. I'm SE and family is in Kent where it was rife so no, your not alone.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 29/10/2021 23:12

My immediate family have all had it twice! We live in central Manchester.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 29/10/2021 23:13

My friend’s dad died of it.

TuftyMarmoset · 29/10/2021 23:17

Do you not work or work at a very small place? I know loads of people at work who have had it, as well as a relative and a couple of friends, one of whom sadly died very young as a result.

nordicnorth · 29/10/2021 23:20

No one you know has told you they've had it. It doesn't mean you don't know anyone that hasn't.

PurpleDaisies · 29/10/2021 23:21

There are at least five people on my street with it at the moment

PurpleDaisies · 29/10/2021 23:22

Dh had it a week ago.

XenoBitch · 29/10/2021 23:23

Oh yes, my nurse neighbour also had it back in the early days.
And some knob on my FB swears he had it in September 2019.

Willyoujustbequiet · 29/10/2021 23:30

Rare to the point of impossible tbh.

I'm in the north and its rife here, always has been. We were put in the top tier and locked down earlier.

At this point it's rare for me to know someone who hasnt had it. Family, friends, the whole street, constant homeschooling....

TuftyMarmoset · 29/10/2021 23:44

Cumulatively there have been almost 9 million recorded cases - which I think works out as 1 in every 7-8ish people (although some might have had it twice) - and the actual number of cases will be much higher due to unavailability of tests at the beginning, and asymptomatic cases going undetected. So not knowing anyone who's had it is very unlikely if you know more than 7 people.

changed12344 · 29/10/2021 23:54

I felt like that too. But this week my husband and I both tested positive

AutumnFrolicks · 30/10/2021 00:01

I've had it, my 3 dc have had it
Exh has had it
Sister and partner have had it
Step sister, her husband and 2 dc have had it.
I'm 'up north'

CheshireSplat · 30/10/2021 00:03

Same as hands up the thread. Small village outside a small city. Hardly knew anyone who had had it until about 2 months ago and now most families with children have had it. Started with the younger teenagers and then worked down to the primary aged kids. No children seemed to have worse than a headache and to have been a bit tired. Neighbours without school aged kids haven't had it.

PrincessNutNuts · 30/10/2021 00:09

Most people haven't had covid.

The estimates of the number of people who haven't yet had covid vary from about 33 million of us to 50 million of us.

So it's entirely possible not to know anybody who has had it, since the majority haven't.

Method · 30/10/2021 00:15

My guess is you do not have school aged children.

dementedpixie · 30/10/2021 00:18

I have 2 teenagers and they haven't had it and neither have dh or I. Dh goes to work and the gym and I go to gym classes. None of my family or friends have had it either. I know of very few people that have had covid

dementedpixie · 30/10/2021 00:19

P.s. I'm in Scotland
