This is the DATA thread.

Our preference is for factual, data driven and analytical contributions.

Please try to keep discussion focused on these.

The links below cover a range of data sources. Ideas for additions or deletions always welcome. PHE probably should be referenced at UKHSA.

Lucky for me Nuts other people have so you don’t need to post

Thanks for clarifying the from part Here

herecomesthsun · 31/10/2021 18:46

This doesn't however cover the last 6 months, in which there has been quite a significant number of child deaths, so I imagine that further research will be forthcoming in due course.

alreadytaken · 31/10/2021 19:45

@sirfredfredgeorge From some of the JCVI minutes "Prior to the presentation the confidentiality of the data was again stressed by
the lead presenter. The data had not been published and therefore details were not recorded in the Minute of this meeting.|"

These committees and sub committees see data before it's made public.

I havent finished reading but have been struck by no consideration of the emerging evidence that covid may have long term impacts on the human body even in mild cases. This is a novel disease. Fair enough to focus on what you can currently quantify but they comment on not knowing the long term impact of myocarditis while apparently entirely ignoring the lack of information on the long term impact of covid. I'm thinking partly of studies like this www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/12/201208121044.htm
and partly of studies in adults. Not even mentioning it is shocking.

From the main committee meeting it looks like they focused primarily on American and Israeli data on risks to children.

They also obviously swallowed the "natural infection is better" line. I dont remember offhand when the proof that wasnt true became available.

Piggywaspushed · 31/10/2021 20:24

I am guessing 'they' wasn't as homogeneous as the minutes make it look . But I agree - and said upthread- that the physical ill health of children is being oddly sidelined as if an insignificant issue, maybe as part of the whole 'over medicalisation ' rhetoric.

JanglyBeads · 31/10/2021 22:35

And really unless we’re swallowing the “British exceptionalism” line from the government, all we have to do is look to what virtually every other country has done to protect children, in school and society in general.

MarshaBradyo · 31/10/2021 22:38

The CMOs over turned the JCVI decision based on briefing from government, didn’t they?

The 100 deaths number relates to deaths of young people aged 19 or younger. It is a sad milestone but it does not equal to "100 paediatric deaths" quoted on twitter and other social media.

There was no debate about benefit of vaccination for 18-19 year olds. It is pretty clear. Covid risk doubles with every 6-7 years of age so, with other things being equal, a 19 year old is running twice the risk in comparison to a 13 year old. It is still low but the differential is 100% (i.e. very meaningful).

Re: younger age groups - England reported 31 deaths in children aged 14 and younger since the beginning of the pandemic (using the 28 days cut off):

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/deaths?areaType=nation&areaName=England

JanglyBeads · 01/11/2021 00:37

But “under 20” is the accepted definition of child by many organisations, which cites a mean preferred age across 115 countries of 18.7:

www.thelancet.com/journals/lanchi/article/PIIS2352-4642(19)30266-4/fulltext

and UNICEF here:

data.unicef.org/topic/child-survival/covid-19/

Obviously I agree it is the upper end of that age range who make up the majority of the deaths however.

herecomesthsun · 01/11/2021 05:00

There's a good twitter thread from Prof Colin Davis here looking at the JCVI minutes and the apparent rationale behind the decisionmaking; also the internal contradictions.

Booster walk in centres set up

mrshoho · 01/11/2021 07:16

Yes people 6 months past 2nd vaccine are urged to get the booster now. Not sure about 16 year olds though??

Piggywaspushed · 01/11/2021 07:27

Just searched my area and no mentions of boosters at any walk in sites...

MarshaBradyo · 01/11/2021 07:29

I just looked we have loads

Hard if not near one

MarshaBradyo · 01/11/2021 07:30

Many are just pharmacies

Piggywaspushed · 01/11/2021 07:31

Do they actually say they are offering 3rd dose for walk ins, though?

mrshoho · 01/11/2021 07:39

sorry this article is saying over 50 to be eligible but on the radio this morning it was telling everybody over 6 months! As usual it is not clear!

CallmeHendricks · 01/11/2021 09:23

Well, I just went on to the NHS website to find my nearest walk-in centre and it came up with "Page not found."

🤷‍♀️

MarshaBradyo · 01/11/2021 09:26

It’s there.

But not sure if it needs updating as when I clicked on booster it seemed to be pre walk in

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/find-a-walk-in-coronavirus-covid-19-vaccination-site/

nordica · 01/11/2021 09:35

From what I understood on the BBC, the eligibility hasn't changed, they have just tried to make it easier for those eligible to have it as take up hasn't been as good as hoped.

CallmeHendricks · 01/11/2021 09:41

Hmm, it has now appeared, but clinics are only open 9am to 2.30pm.
Not great for people working...

julieca · 01/11/2021 09:55

The government site says you can get a booster from a walk-in clinic in one place in my City. It tells you to click the link to see opening times. But when you do, it only says vaccine dose 1 and 2 is available. So it looks as if there are no walk in booster clinics in my whole city.

Piggywaspushed · 01/11/2021 10:17

I got this too. Am guessing the websites will update later. Our local mayor and MP are very good at updating on Facebook so I shall keep an eye on this. DH is 6 months post vaccine 2 next week. We also can't get flu jab for love or money, which is Groundhog Day for us!

julieca · 01/11/2021 10:46

I got a flu jab easily, but they are inviting people based on vulnerability. So if you are in your fifties with no other vulnerabilities then you might wait a but until more vulnerable are done.
